How to Move a Fullscreen Game to a Second Monitor in Windows 11 and 10

Press Windows + Shift + Left or Right Arrow to move an active game between monitors. If exclusive fullscreen blocks the shortcut, switch to Borderless Windowed mode and use Windows' Extend setting.

The quickest method is to press Windows + Shift + Left Arrow or Right Arrow while the game is active. This moves the active game window to the monitor on that side. It works reliably when the game is set to Windowed or Borderless Windowed mode. A game running in true exclusive fullscreen may not behave like a movable Windows window, so switch its display mode first if the shortcut does nothing.

Move the game with the Windows keyboard shortcut

  1. Connect both monitors and make sure Windows detects them.
  2. Press Windows + P and select Extend. Extend mode allows windows and other desktop items to move between displays. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions if the displays are not arranged correctly.
  3. Launch the game, or use Alt + Tab to return to it, so it is the active application.
  4. Press Windows + Shift + Left Arrow to move it to the monitor on the left, or Windows + Shift + Right Arrow to move it to the monitor on the right.

Microsoft documents this shortcut as moving the active window between monitors. It is normally the best first solution on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. If the game moves but is no longer fullscreen, maximize it on the second display or select Borderless Windowed mode in the game.

If the shortcut does not move the fullscreen game

The game is probably using exclusive fullscreen. Exclusive fullscreen is not always a normal desktop window that Windows can reposition. Microsoft’s Direct3D documentation distinguishes full-screen mode from windowed mode, and its PC game-development guidance recommends Borderless Windowed or Windowed modes for scenarios involving display and focus changes.

  1. Open the game’s Settings, Options, or Video/Graphics/Display menu.
  2. Find Display Mode, Window Mode, or a similarly named setting.
  3. Change Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed, Fullscreen Windowed, or Windowed.
  4. Apply the setting. The game may briefly minimize, resize, or restart its graphics renderer.
  5. Press Windows + Shift + the appropriate arrow key.
  6. After it reaches the second monitor, maximize the window or select Borderless Windowed mode again if necessary.

The exact labels differ by game, and some titles provide their own Monitor, Display, or Output selector. If that option exists, choose the second monitor directly, then use Borderless Windowed mode if you want the game to fill that display without the focus problems associated with exclusive fullscreen.

There is no Windows shortcut that guarantees movement of every exclusive-fullscreen game. The behavior depends on the game, its engine, and how it creates its rendering surface.

Make the second monitor the game’s main display

Some games choose their startup monitor from Windows’ primary-display setting. If the game always opens on the wrong screen, temporarily make the desired monitor the main display:

  1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Display settings. You can also open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the monitor you want to use for gaming. Click Identify if you are unsure which numbered display is which.
  3. Expand the display options if needed and select Make this my main display.
  4. Check that Multiple displays is still set to Extend these displays, not Duplicate or Second screen only.
  5. Close and relaunch the game.

This is a practical fallback, not a universal per-game override. Windows can identify and arrange the displays, but the game may retain its own monitor preference or require a setting in its video menu.

Select the monitor inside the game

Before changing Windows’ primary display, look for a monitor selector in the game’s graphics settings. Common labels include Monitor, Display, Output Display, and Screen. Choose the second monitor, apply the change, and verify that the resolution and refresh rate are appropriate for that display.

Windows exposes display-specific resolution and refresh-rate controls in Settings > System > Display, but games can maintain separate graphics settings. After moving the game, check both the game’s video menu and Windows’ display settings if the image looks stretched, blurry, or limited to the wrong refresh rate.

Steam workaround for games that will not start in a movable mode

Some Steam games or engines support launch options that force a windowed start. Valve documents options such as -windowed, -sw, and -fullscreen, but launch parameters are game- and engine-dependent; they are not universal commands.

  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click the game and select Properties.
  3. Enter -windowed in Launch Options if that title supports it. Some engines use -sw instead.
  4. Start the game, move it with Windows + Shift + the left or right arrow, and then configure the game’s own display settings.

Remove the launch option later if it causes an unwanted windowed start. Do not assume that a parameter supported by one Steam game will work in another.

When Windows does not detect the second monitor

If the second screen does not appear in Display settings, moving the game is not yet the problem. First establish a working dual-monitor connection.

  1. Press Windows + P and choose Extend.
  2. Confirm that the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by the computer.
  3. Open Settings > System > Display and select Detect, if that option is available.
  4. Reconnect the video cable at both ends. If possible, test a different port or cable.
  5. Check whether a dock, adapter, or laptop port supports video output. A USB-C connector does not by itself guarantee display output.
  6. If the computer has no suitable additional video output, a compatible USB-C display adapter or dock may add one. Compatibility depends on the computer, USB-C port capabilities, graphics hardware, and adapter or dock.
  7. If the display is blank or the graphics output appears stuck, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver. The screen may flicker or briefly go dark. This is a recovery step, not a guaranteed monitor fix.

If a cable is damaged, missing, or the wrong type for the monitor and computer, replacing it may be appropriate. A new cable will not fix a game-window problem when Windows already detects and displays both monitors.

Choosing an adapter, dock, or cable

For a laptop that lacks a second video output, consider a USB-C display adapter or dock only after checking the port’s specifications and the adapter’s supported resolution and refresh rate. Some USB-C ports support DisplayPort video output while others support data and charging only. A dock can also introduce its own driver, bandwidth, and compatibility limitations.

Likewise, choose an HDMI or DisplayPort cable that matches the available ports and the resolution and refresh-rate combination you intend to use. Treat these as connection accessories, not as a solution to an already-detected display that a game refuses to move onto.

Fixes for common problems

The shortcut moves other apps but not the game

That usually indicates exclusive fullscreen or a game-specific rendering mode that does not act like a movable desktop window. Change the game to Borderless Windowed or Windowed mode, then try the shortcut again. This conclusion follows from the difference between full-screen and windowed rendering; it is not a guarantee for every title.

The game moves, but the cursor or taskbar stays on the first monitor

The window may have moved successfully even though Windows’ primary-display behavior has not changed. Check the monitor arrangement in Settings > System > Display, and make the target monitor the main display if you want the taskbar and primary input behavior there. The game’s own mouse-lock or input setting can also affect cursor behavior.

The game minimizes when you click the other monitor

Exclusive-fullscreen games can minimize when they lose foreground focus. Switch to Borderless Windowed mode for the most reliable dual-monitor behavior. Microsoft notes that some full-screen technologies minimize when focus is lost and recommends borderless or windowed modes for relevant PC-game scenarios. The precise result remains game-specific.

The game opens on the right monitor but uses the wrong resolution or refresh rate

Open the game’s display settings and select the target monitor, resolution, and refresh rate if those controls are available. Then verify the monitor’s settings under Settings > System > Display. The game and Windows may store separate values.

The monitor flickers, disappears, or is intermittently detected

Start with the built-in checks: power and input selection, cable reconnection, another port, Display settings > Detect, and the graphics-driver reset shortcut. If the symptoms continue, investigate the graphics driver and the dock or adapter rather than repeatedly changing the game’s fullscreen mode. A third-party utility such as Outbyte Driver Updater is optional; its vendor says it scans for missing or outdated drivers and supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is not needed simply to move a functioning game window, and Microsoft’s built-in display troubleshooting should come first.

Best settings for a dual-monitor gaming setup

  • Use Extend mode rather than Duplicate or Second screen only.
  • Prefer Borderless Windowed when you regularly click, chat, browse, or use applications on the other display.
  • Use exclusive fullscreen only when the individual game works correctly with it and you do not need frequent focus changes.
  • Use the game’s monitor selector when available; use Windows’ primary-display setting as a fallback.
  • After moving the game, verify the target monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.

If you are building the setup rather than fixing an existing one, a second monitor is the relevant hardware addition—but it is not necessary to buy one if both displays are already connected and working.

Do you need a second monitor?

Yes, the procedure assumes that two displays are physically connected and detected. If you are assembling a dual-monitor gaming setup, compare a second monitor with the resolution, refresh rate, connection type, and desk space you need. For the keyboard-shortcut solution itself, however, purchasing hardware is unnecessary when your existing monitors already work in Extend mode.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Both screens visible in Windows? If no, use Windows + P > Extend and troubleshoot the connection.
  2. Game in Borderless Windowed or Windowed mode? If no, change it from exclusive fullscreen.
  3. Game active? Click it or switch back with Alt + Tab.
  4. Move it: press Windows + Shift + Left Arrow or Right Arrow.
  5. Still opening on the wrong screen? Select the monitor in the game or make it Windows’ main display.
  6. Wrong image quality? Check resolution and refresh rate in both the game and Windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the shortcut to move a fullscreen game to another monitor?

With the game active, press Windows + Shift + Left Arrow or Right Arrow. It works best when the game is Windowed or Borderless Windowed rather than exclusive fullscreen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows + Shift + Arrow not work in my game?

The game is likely using exclusive fullscreen or a rendering surface Windows cannot reposition as a normal window. Change Display Mode to Borderless Windowed or Windowed, apply it, and try the shortcut again.

Can I choose which monitor a game uses?

Many games have a Monitor, Display, Output Display, or Screen selector in their video settings. If the game lacks one and always starts on the wrong display, make the desired monitor Windows’ main display under Settings > System > Display, then relaunch the game.

Will moving the game change my primary monitor?

No. Moving the window does not automatically move the taskbar or change Windows’ primary-display setting. Set the target monitor as the main display separately if that is what you want.

The Bottom Line

Use Windows + Shift + Left/Right Arrow first. If it fails, change the game from exclusive fullscreen to Borderless Windowed or Windowed mode, ensure Windows is using Extend, and use the game’s monitor selector or Windows’ main-display setting when necessary.
