For quick repositioning in DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO, press X/A with a direction; to cross distance, hold R2/RT and press X/A for Dragon Dash. The controls below use the game’s Standard scheme and official PlayStation/Xbox button pairs. Bandai Namco recommends Standard as the default; Classic is designed to resemble earlier Budokai Tenkaichi controls. Check your selected scheme, platform, and custom bindings in-game.
How to Step or Short Dash
Push the stick toward the direction you want to move and press X on PlayStation or A on Xbox. At close range, this performs a Step; farther from the opponent, it becomes a Short Dash. These are quick ways to change position or angle without committing to a long approach. A Step or Short Dash can help evade some attacks, including certain Blast Attacks, but it is not a guaranteed dodge.

Bandai Namco’s May 26, 2026 update notice says players can perform one second Short Dash immediately after initiating movement. It also says the update reduced attack-direction misalignment against opponents just after Step. The notice does not quantify these changes or provide frame data.
How to Dragon Dash
Hold R2 on PlayStation or RT on Xbox, then press X/A while directing the stick toward your destination. Dragon Dash rushes forward at high speed and uses Ki when activated and while moving. It is useful for crossing larger distances, but the Ki cost makes it a resource choice rather than free movement. The official guide also describes transitioning from Dragon Dash into Rush combos or a Smash Attack.

The May 26, 2026 update reduced recovery when activating Dragon Dash during Short Dash. This is an official change, but Bandai Namco does not state its frame-level effect.
How to Z-Burst Dash behind an opponent
While Dragon Dashing, press X/A again to perform Z-Burst Dash. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe describes it as “a High-Speed Movement that allows you to get behind your opponent during Dragon Dash.” The move costs more Ki than Dragon Dash and is harder for an opponent to guard, so use it as a more committed approach or reposition rather than a cost-free escape.

In its May 26, 2026 notice, Bandai Namco said Z-Burst Dash’s initial Ki cost was reduced and that subsequent Ki consumption is based on travel distance after activation. The notice does not give a numerical cost.
How to ascend and descend quickly
For a rapid vertical move, hold R2/RT and press:
- L1/LB: Rapid Ascend, which rushes upward.
- L2/LT: Rapid Descend, which rushes downward.
Both rapid options consume Ki. The May 26, 2026 update notice says Rapid Ascend and Rapid Descend now consume more Ki; it does not specify the amount. For ordinary Ascend and Descend, the same notice says movement became faster at close range.

High-Speed Dragon Dash
A separate High-Speed Dragon Dash was added in Bandai Namco’s December 12, 2024 free update. On PS5, hold R2 and hold X; on Xbox Series X|S, hold RT and hold A. The May 26, 2026 update later adjusted its input window, Smash charge, and trajectory. The published notice does not provide frame data or quantify those adjustments.
Which movement should you use?
| Move | Input | Best suited to | Ki use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step / Short Dash | Direction + X/A | Short reposition or angle change; the move depends on distance from the opponent. | No Ki use is reported in Bandai Namco’s movement guide. |
| Dragon Dash | R2/RT + X/A, with a direction | Covering distance and potentially transitioning into offense. | Consumes Ki on activation and while moving. |
| Z-Burst Dash | Press X/A again during Dragon Dash | A more committed movement that gets behind the opponent. | Costs more Ki than Dragon Dash; the May 2026 notice says later consumption depends on distance traveled. |
| Rapid Ascend / Rapid Descend | R2/RT + L1/LB or L2/LT | Quickly changing altitude. | Consumes Ki; the May 2026 notice says the cost increased. |
This comparison reflects the official move descriptions and stated Ki costs, not a measured ranking of speed, safety, or effectiveness.

What the official updates do—and do not—establish
Bandai Namco’s December 12, 2024 notice says players will no longer be hit by certain attacks immediately after performing a Step. That is narrower than saying Step provides universal invulnerability. The May 26, 2026 notice lists movement adjustments but does not publish their frame-level magnitude. Accordingly, no exact safety window, frame advantage, guaranteed dodge, or universally fastest route can be established from these official descriptions.
