Moving Magento from a local computer to a VPS is a coordinated application, database, web-server and DNS migration—not a simple file upload. The reliable sequence is to inventory the local store, reproduce a compatible Linux/PHP/database/search stack, copy the code and media, import a consistent database dump, reconnect app/etc/env.php, change both base URLs, configure Nginx to serve only pub, deploy Magento, and test the live stack before changing DNS.

Keep the local installation and a verified database backup intact until checkout, Admin, cron, search, email, payments and media have passed testing. If validation fails, DNS can remain pointed at the old environment while you correct the VPS.

What must move from localhost

A Magento installation consists of more than the files visible in the project directory. Plan the migration as four related sets of data:

  • Application code: the Magento release, Composer-installed dependencies, custom modules, themes and patches.
  • Deployment configuration: app/etc/config.php and the environment-specific app/etc/env.php.
  • Runtime and user assets: product and category images, WYSIWYG uploads, generated files and any static content required by the release.
  • Database state: catalog, customers, orders, configuration, sessions stored in the database, and module data.

Adobe describes config.php and env.php together as the Commerce deployment configuration: they are created during installation and are required to start the application. They do not have the same role. config.php is shared deployment configuration, while env.php contains installation-specific values such as database credentials, encryption key and service endpoints.

Files and directories to account for

The production codebase must be present on the VPS, along with the generated, media and static assets required by your Magento release. Adobe’s production guidance specifically identifies app/etc/config.php, generated, pub/media, pub/media/wysiwyg and pub/static among production assets. Do not assume that a fresh checkout plus a database dump recreates uploaded images or generated files.

Do not copy local credentials blindly. Preserve app/etc/config.php when it represents the modules enabled in the deployment, but create or edit app/etc/env.php for the VPS database, cache, session, queue and search services.

1. Inventory the local Magento installation

Write down the current state before touching the VPS. The inventory becomes the compatibility checklist and gives you a rollback reference.

Record application and service details

  • Magento or Adobe Commerce version and edition.
  • PHP version, PHP-FPM status and enabled PHP extensions.
  • Composer version and the exact dependency lock file used for the deployment.
  • Enabled modules, custom patches, custom themes and checkout customizations.
  • Database engine and version, database name, database user and host.
  • Search engine and version, such as the service required by your Magento release.
  • Cache and session backends, including whether they use the database, files or a separate service.
  • Queue consumers, cron jobs, scheduled imports and any external workers.
  • Base URLs for secure and unsecure storefront and Admin access.
  • Media volume, especially pub/media and WYSIWYG uploads.
  • Payment, shipping, tax, email, ERP, analytics and other integrations that use hostnames, keys or webhooks.

Check the release compatibility matrix for supported PHP, database, search and cache versions before choosing the VPS image. Matching the operating system alone is not enough; a PHP or search version outside the Magento release’s support range can prevent installation or produce subtle runtime failures.

Choose a migration window

Measure how long the database export, file transfer, import and validation take on a rehearsal VPS or a copy of the store. For the final move, schedule a period in which no orders or catalog edits can be lost. Either stop writes at the source or enable Magento maintenance mode before creating the final dump. Keep the local store available but inaccessible to customers after the cutover decision so that a second database state cannot diverge from the VPS.

2. Prepare and harden the VPS

Build the destination before transferring production data. Use a supported Linux distribution and install Nginx, PHP with PHP-FPM, the supported database server, and the search, cache, session and queue services required by your Magento release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minimum operational setup

  • Create a non-root deployment user and use SSH keys rather than password-only access.
  • Apply operating-system updates and remove or disable services that are not required.
  • Configure a firewall allowing only the ports you actually need, normally SSH plus HTTP and HTTPS.
  • Set a hostname and time synchronization; incorrect time can break signed requests, cron schedules and payment callbacks.
  • Arrange encrypted, restorable backups for both the database and pub/media. A backup that has never been restored is not a migration plan.
  • Decide how DNS will be changed and lower the DNS record TTL ahead of the cutover if your DNS provider permits it.
  • Plan TLS certificates and automatic renewal before opening the storefront publicly.
  • Provide monitoring for disk space, memory, CPU, PHP-FPM, Nginx, database, search and queue health.

Give Magento enough CPU, RAM and fast storage for its catalog, indexers, PHP workers and database workload. NVMe storage and adequate I/O headroom matter when static content is deployed, indexes are rebuilt or backups run, but no universal VPS size can be prescribed without your catalog, traffic and checkout workload.

Create the destination paths

Choose one permanent Magento root and use it consistently in the service configuration, deployment scripts and backup jobs. A common layout places the release under a directory such as /var/www/magento, with the Nginx document root set to its pub subdirectory. Ensure the deployment user owns the application files or has the exact group permissions needed to run Magento commands.

3. Put the local store in a consistent state

For a rehearsal, you can copy a development database while the local store is running. For the final migration, stop writes or enable maintenance mode, finish any in-flight imports, and stop cron or queue consumers that could modify data during the dump.

  1. Record the current Magento version and run status checks for indexers, cron and queues.
  2. Enable maintenance mode with bin/magento maintenance:enable if the source is a Magento 2 installation and you need Magento to block storefront writes.
  3. Stop external import jobs and workers that write to the database.
  4. Take a separate filesystem backup of the code and pub/media.
  5. Create the final database dump, then record its file size and checksum so the transferred copy can be verified.

Maintenance mode does not replace a database-consistency procedure. A dump must represent one coherent point in time, and external systems must not continue writing while it is created.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Export and transfer the database

Use a transactional dump for the database engine and options supported by your server. Adobe’s migration example uses mysqldump with a single transaction and triggers, then compresses the stream:

mysqldump -h <database host> --user=<database username> --password=<password> --single-transaction --triggers <database name> | gzip - > /tmp/database.sql.gz

Run the command in an environment where the password will not be exposed in shell history or process listings. Prefer a protected credentials file or an interactive prompt according to your operating system’s security policy. The --single-transaction option provides a consistent view for transactional tables; triggers must be included because Magento or an extension may rely on them.

Transfer safely

Copy the compressed dump over an authenticated, encrypted channel such as SSH/SFTP. Transfer the application archive or Git checkout, then copy pub/media separately if it is large. Verify checksums on both ends, extract into the final Magento root, and confirm that the expected directories and file counts exist before importing the database.

5. Import into the VPS database

Create a dedicated database and user on the VPS. Grant only the privileges Magento requires on that database; do not reuse a broad administrative account for the web application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create the destination database with the character set and collation required by your Magento release.
  2. Create a unique database user and strong password, restricted to the required host or local socket where practical.
  3. Copy database.sql.gz to a protected temporary location on the VPS.
  4. Import the dump while monitoring disk space, database errors and execution time.
  5. Check the import log and confirm that tables, triggers and row counts are present before starting Magento.
gunzip -c /tmp/database.sql.gz | mysql -h localhost -u magento_app -p magento_database

The host, database name and user in this example are illustrative; use the values created on your VPS. If the import fails, do not attempt to run Magento against a partial database. Remove the incomplete database, correct the error, and repeat the import from the verified dump.

6. Transfer Magento code, media and configuration

Place the application code under the destination Magento root. Preserve the Composer lock file and the module set represented by app/etc/config.php. Copy pub/media in full, including pub/media/wysiwyg. Retain required generated and static assets during the first boot; they can be regenerated later according to the release’s deployment procedure.

Rebuild environment-specific configuration

Edit app/etc/env.php only after the destination database and services exist. Update the database connection, encryption key handling, cache and session backends, queue configuration, and search endpoint for the VPS. Do not replace the encryption key with a new value during a straightforward move: changing it can make encrypted configuration and stored credentials unreadable.

You can set database values with Magento’s configuration command instead of editing the file manually:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
bin/magento setup:config:set --db-host=localhost --db-name=magento_database --db-user=magento_app --db-password='strong-database-password' --key='existing-encryption-key'

Adobe documents --db-host, --db-name, --db-user, --db-password and --key as parameters for this operation. Use the command from the Magento root and ensure the resulting file is readable by the Magento filesystem owner but not publicly accessible.

7. Change Magento’s base URLs

Localhost URLs must be replaced with the live hostname in both secure and unsecure configuration. Leaving one value pointed at localhost can produce redirect loops, broken cookies, incorrect canonical links or an Admin that loads assets from the old machine.

Using the Magento CLI

From the Magento root, set the unsecure and secure base URLs to the final hostname, including the trailing slash expected by Magento:

bin/magento config:set web/unsecure/base_url http://store.example.com/
bin/magento config:set web/secure/base_url https://store.example.com/

Use your actual hostname and the HTTPS policy you intend to enforce. If the site will redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS, test that redirect after Nginx and TLS are configured rather than assuming the URL change alone provides it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the CLI cannot boot

If Magento cannot start because its environment configuration is not yet correct, update the corresponding core_config_data values directly in the imported database as a controlled recovery step, then run the CLI once the application boots. Back up the database before direct SQL edits, change only the intended web/unsecure/base_url and web/secure/base_url rows, and clear Magento caches afterward.

8. Configure Nginx and PHP-FPM correctly

Use the nginx.conf.sample shipped with your Magento release as the baseline. Set $MAGE_ROOT to the application directory, include the sample from the server block, and connect Nginx to the PHP-FPM upstream or socket used by the installed PHP version.

Why the document root must be pub

Set the server’s web root to $MAGE_ROOT/pub, not the Magento project root. This prevents direct browser access to sensitive directories such as app, var, vendor and generated. The sample configuration also supplies Magento’s front-controller routing and static-file handling; replacing it with a generic PHP site block can expose files or break rewrites.

Adapt the server block

A simplified structure looks like this; retain the complete release-specific directives from Magento’s sample rather than copying only this outline:

http {
    upstream fastcgi_backend {
        server unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
    }
}

server {
    listen 80;
    server_name store.example.com;
    set $MAGE_ROOT /var/www/magento;
    root $MAGE_ROOT/pub;

    include $MAGE_ROOT/nginx.conf.sample;
}

The PHP-FPM socket path varies by distribution and PHP version. Confirm it exists and that Nginx can connect to it. If your package uses a TCP listener instead, use the configured address and protect it from unintended network access.

Validate the Nginx configuration before reloading it:

nginx -t
systemctl reload nginx
systemctl restart php-fpm

The exact PHP-FPM service name may include the installed version. A successful Nginx syntax test does not prove that PHP-FPM is running or that Magento can write its required directories, so test an actual storefront request and inspect both service logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Set ownership, deploy Magento and warm caches

Run Magento commands as the filesystem owner, not as an arbitrary root shell. Incorrect ownership commonly appears later as failed uploads, unable-to-write static files or cache errors.

  1. Set the Magento root and writable directories to the deployment user and the group used by Nginx/PHP-FPM.
  2. Set production mode where appropriate for the release and deployment policy.
  3. Run bin/magento setup:upgrade to apply the imported module schema and data changes.
  4. Compile and deploy static content when required by the release and production mode.
  5. Flush or clean Magento caches, then restart or reload PHP-FPM and Nginx.
  6. Run indexers and confirm their status before opening the storefront.

Commands such as setup:static-content:deploy can consume substantial CPU, storage and time on a large catalog. Execute them during the migration window and monitor free disk space. Do not delete generated or static directories merely because they look stale; remove and regenerate them only with the release’s documented deployment procedure and a rollback copy available.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

10. Validate the VPS before DNS cutover

Test the VPS by its temporary hostname, hosts-file entry or direct server address while DNS still points to the old store. Use a complete test matrix rather than checking only the home page.

Area What to verify Typical failure clues
Storefront Home, category, product, search and CMS pages load with the intended hostname. Redirects to localhost, 404s, PHP errors or mixed-content warnings.
Admin Admin URL, login, dashboard and configuration pages work over HTTPS. Login loop, missing CSS/JavaScript or an invalid form key.
Catalog and media Product images, WYSIWYG images, resized images and downloadable files open. 404 media responses, permission errors or incorrect media base URL.
Checkout Cart, tax, shipping, payment authorization, order placement and confirmation email work in the provider’s test mode. Gateway callback failure, stale credentials, blocked outbound connection or session loss.
Customers Registration, login, password reset and account history work. Cookie-domain mismatch, encryption-key change or email transport failure.
Search and cache Catalog search returns current results; configured cache backend responds and invalidation works. Indexer errors, unavailable search service or stale pages.
Operations Cron, queues, indexers, imports, backups and log rotation run under the intended user. No scheduled jobs, duplicate consumers, unwritable logs or full disk.
HTTPS and routing HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior, canonical host, static assets and API endpoints are correct. Redirect loop, mixed content, blocked REST requests or incorrect host headers.
Logs Review Nginx, PHP-FPM, Magento, database and search logs during real requests. FastCGI errors, upstream timeouts, SQL errors or permission denials.

Use a disposable customer account and a low-value or sandbox payment transaction for checkout testing. Confirm that email messages use the live sender and links, but do not send real customer notifications until the cutover is approved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Cut over DNS and keep a rollback path

After the VPS passes validation, announce a short final freeze, enable maintenance mode on the source if it is not already enabled, take one last database dump, and repeat the import if the rehearsal copy is no longer current. Re-copy media changed since the rehearsal, run the deployment and smoke tests again, then point the DNS record at the VPS.

  1. Keep the old local or staging environment and its last known-good database backup untouched.
  2. Confirm the VPS firewall, TLS certificate, Nginx server name and PHP-FPM service are ready for the production hostname.
  3. Change DNS and monitor propagation from multiple networks.
  4. Watch orders, payment callbacks, error logs, queue depth, CPU, memory, storage and database connections.
  5. Disable source access only after the new storefront is serving traffic and backups have completed.

Rollback means restoring DNS to the previous environment and preserving any orders or customer changes created on the VPS. If the new store accepted transactions, reconcile those records before reopening the old database; otherwise the two environments can diverge and create duplicate orders or lost updates.

Common migration failures and fixes

Magento redirects to localhost

Check both web/unsecure/base_url and web/secure/base_url, including the website and store scopes if your installation overrides the default scope. Flush caches and remove browser cookies for the old host before retesting.

Images or static files return 404

Confirm that pub/media and required static assets were transferred, that Nginx serves pub, and that the Magento filesystem owner can read the files. Run the release-appropriate static deployment command and inspect Nginx’s error log for path or permission failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Admin or checkout loops back to login

Verify the secure base URL, cookie domain and HTTPS termination arrangement. A proxy or load balancer that does not pass the original HTTPS scheme can make Magento believe every request is insecure. Also confirm that the encryption key and session backend match the migrated environment.

PHP-FPM upstream errors

Check that the configured socket or TCP endpoint exists, the PHP-FPM service is running, and Nginx has permission to connect. Compare the PHP version and enabled extensions with the local inventory; a missing extension can cause a PHP fatal error even when Nginx itself is healthy.

Database connection or schema errors

Test the destination credentials from the VPS, verify the database host is reachable, and inspect app/etc/env.php for stale localhost values. If setup:upgrade fails, restore the database backup before retrying rather than continuing against a partially upgraded schema.

Cron, queues or indexing do not run

Check the system scheduler entry, service user, Magento mode, PHP binary path and file ownership. Run the job manually as the Magento filesystem owner, inspect its output, then confirm that the queue or search service endpoint in env.php is reachable.

How to choose a VPS for Magento

Compare a VPS or managed service against the requirements discovered during inventory, not against a generic “Magento hosting” label. Adobe’s application and Nginx guidance establishes compatibility requirements, but it does not endorse a provider or publish provider performance benchmarks.

Decision factor Questions to answer before purchase
Software compatibility Are the required PHP, database, search, cache and operating-system versions available and supported for your Magento release?
CPU and RAM Is there headroom for PHP-FPM workers, database activity, indexers, static deployment and traffic spikes?
Storage and I/O Is storage fast enough for database and index workloads, and is capacity sufficient for media, logs, backups and future growth?
Backups Can you schedule, encrypt, retain and independently restore database and filesystem backups?
Network Are throughput, latency and transfer limits suitable for media delivery, payment callbacks, feeds and remote administration?
Access and security Do you receive root or equivalent SSH access, firewall controls, TLS tooling and timely operating-system patches?
Operations support Does managed patching include the operating system only, or also Nginx, PHP-FPM, database, search and Magento troubleshooting?
Monitoring and SLA Are uptime commitments, alerting, incident response and resource metrics clearly defined?
Region Is the data-center location appropriate for customers, payment services, tax rules and data-residency obligations?
Magento expertise Can support diagnose deployment, indexer, queue, search and checkout problems rather than only rebooting the server?

For a small development store, a modest VPS may be sufficient. A busy catalog, high order volume or large media library may justify managed operations or separate database, search and cache services. Measure your own CPU, memory, I/O and request behavior during a rehearsal before committing to a fixed size.

Final migration checklist

  • Magento, PHP, database, search and cache versions are compatible.
  • SSH keys, firewall, TLS, monitoring and restorable backups are configured.
  • app/etc/config.php, code, generated, pub/media and required static assets are present.
  • app/etc/env.php contains VPS-specific database and service values and preserves the intended encryption key.
  • The database dump imported completely, including triggers.
  • Both base URLs use the live hostname.
  • Nginx uses Magento’s sample configuration and serves only pub.
  • PHP-FPM, ownership, production mode, schema upgrades, static deployment, caches and indexers are healthy.
  • Storefront, Admin, media, checkout, customers, email, search, cron, queues, integrations and logs have been tested.
  • DNS cutover and rollback procedures are written down, with the local source and backup retained.
