For a small private group, begin with approximately 6–8 GB of allocated memory while leaving enough RAM for the operating system. Every player must install the identical modpack release and loader configuration.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
The project page currently lists version 4.1.3, but releases can change. Treat the release number, Minecraft version, Fabric loader and Java runtime as a single compatibility set whenever you install, update or troubleshoot the server.

What you need before installing
Prominence II: Hasturian Era is a large modded Minecraft Java Edition pack. A normal client profile is not the correct server installation: the host needs the separate server-pack download, while each player keeps a client installation in their launcher.
| Requirement | What to use | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Modpack | Prominence II: Hasturian Era server pack matching the client release | The server pack contains the files intended to run the dedicated server; a client profile includes files that belong only on players’ computers. |
| Current project listing | Version 4.1.3 is listed for Minecraft 1.20.1 | The project can publish newer releases, so verify the number when downloading. |
| Loader | Fabric | The setup guidance identifies Fabric rather than Forge for this pack. |
| Java | Java 17 | The researched setup and hosting guidance targets Java 17 for Minecraft 1.20.1. |
| Machine | A computer that can remain online while friends play | A self-hosted world stops being reachable when the host machine is shut down, disconnected or put to sleep. |
| Network access | Firewall permission and normally TCP port 25565 forwarded through the router | Players outside your home network need a route to the server. |
Have a dedicated folder for the server rather than extracting files into a desktop or an existing Minecraft installation. Keeping the world, configuration, logs and backups together makes upgrades and recovery safer.

Download the correct server pack
Find the release and additional file
- Open the official Prominence II: Hasturian Era project on CurseForge.
- Choose the release your group intends to use. The current listing identified for this guide is v4.1.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Fabric.
- Open the project’s Files area and then its Additional Files section.
- Download the server-pack file attached to that same release. Do not substitute the ordinary client download.
Write down the release number before you distribute instructions to friends. A server can start successfully and still reject players if the server and client packs are different revisions.
Extract into a clean directory
- Create a new directory dedicated to this world, such as a folder named for the pack and release.
- Extract the complete server-pack archive into that directory. Preserve its folder structure; do not move individual mods into a separate location.
- Look for the included
HOW_TO_RUN.mdfile and read it before changing launch settings. - If the pack includes a start script, use that supplied script. It is the pack’s intended entry point and may set required Fabric arguments or paths.
Do not copy a client-only configuration or an unrelated mod list into the server directory. If you later change releases, make a new directory or a complete backup first so you can roll back without mixing files.
Install Java 17 and verify Fabric
Check the Java runtime
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the machine that will run the server. In a terminal or command prompt, run java -version and confirm that the reported major version is 17. If the command reports another major version, the start script may launch the wrong runtime even when Java 17 is installed; correct the system path or the script’s Java setting before troubleshooting mods.

Use the loader supplied for the pack
The server-pack instructions identify Fabric for Minecraft 1.20.1. Do not replace Fabric with Forge, and do not add a separately downloaded loader unless the pack’s own instructions call for it. A loader mismatch is a configuration problem, not a missing-memory problem.
Start the server from the extracted directory using the supplied script. The first run normally creates the runtime files and world folder, then stops because Minecraft requires an EULA decision. If the script reports that Java cannot be found, return to the Java 17 check before changing any mod files.
Accept the EULA and perform the first launch
- Run the supplied start script once from the server directory.
- When the process stops, open the generated
eula.txtfile. - Read the Minecraft EULA and, if you agree to it, change the setting to
eula=true. - Save the file and start the server again with the same script.
- Wait for the server to finish loading before attempting a connection. The console should remain running rather than returning immediately to the command prompt.
Keep the console visible during the first launch. It is where you will see missing-file errors, loader exceptions, world-generation activity and the address on which the server is listening. Stop the process through the script or console’s documented shutdown method rather than closing the window abruptly, especially after players have joined.

How much RAM does Prominence II need?
For a small private group, begin with approximately 6–8 GB allocated to the server process. This is a planning recommendation from hosting guides, not an official universal requirement. Actual demand changes with the number of simultaneous players, exploration speed, base complexity, loaded chunks, dungeons and boss encounters.
Allocate memory without starving the computer
- Leave operating-system headroom. Allocating every gigabyte to Java can make both the server and the host machine less responsive.
- Use the memory setting in the supplied start script or the pack’s documented configuration rather than creating a second competing launch command.
- Begin at the lower end of the range if the group is small, then observe behavior during normal play.
- Increase memory only when monitoring shows that the server is consistently running short and the machine has capacity.
Judge performance by workload, not player count alone
Watch the console and players’ experience while everyone explores new terrain, builds a large base, enters dungeons and fights bosses. Slow chunk generation, repeated tick-delay warnings or long pauses during those activities are more useful evidence than a theoretical RAM number. Memory cannot fix a wrong Java version, a mismatched pack or an overloaded CPU, so resolve compatibility and workload issues first.
Open the server to friends
Allow the port through the host firewall
Permit the server’s listening port in the operating system firewall. The normal Minecraft Java port is TCP 25565, although the actual value should match the server configuration and the port you forward on the router.

Forward the port on your router
- Give the host computer a stable local address, using your router’s reservation feature when available.
- Create a port-forwarding rule for the server’s TCP port, normally 25565, pointing to that local address.
- Allow the same port in the host computer’s firewall.
- Start the server and test from outside your home network, such as with a friend on a different connection.
- Give friends the reachable address and port. Players on the same local network may instead use the host’s local address.
Router interfaces use different labels, and some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT. If forwarding appears correct but outside players cannot connect, check whether your provider gives you a publicly reachable address; the server software cannot bypass a network that does not accept inbound connections.

The launcher brand is not the compatibility requirement. CurseForge, Modrinth and Prism can all be used as launchers when the installed client content matches the server exactly. Have every player select the same Prominence II release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Fabric profile, then launch with Java 17.
Client checklist
- Pack name: Prominence II: Hasturian Era.
- Release number: exactly the server’s release, such as v4.1.3 when that is the version you selected.
- Minecraft version: 1.20.1 for the currently identified release.
- Loader: Fabric, not Forge.
- Java runtime: Java 17.
- Mods and configuration: use the official client profile for that release; do not add or remove files casually.
Players should connect only after the server has completed startup. If one player fails while others can join, compare that player’s displayed pack version, Minecraft version, loader and Java runtime with a working player’s installation.

Back up before any pack update
Stop the server cleanly and make a complete copy of the world and server directory before changing the modpack release. Keep at least one backup outside the live directory so a failed update cannot overwrite both the working world and its recovery copy.
Keep the three release points aligned
The server pack, every player’s client pack and the release number must remain aligned. Updating only the server, only one player’s client or only individual mods creates a mismatch that can produce connection errors, missing registry entries or world instability.
Recommended Free Tools
Change one variable at a time
When diagnosing a problem, record the current release, Java version and loader. Change one setting, restart, and check the result before making another change. This preserves a useful cause-and-effect trail and makes rollback practical.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you control of the machine, files, backups and network configuration. Managed hosting trades some control and a recurring fee for a control panel, a machine that is designed to remain online and less manual setup.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription, but you supply electricity, hardware and your internet connection. | Monthly or recurring provider charge; verify current price and billing terms. |
| Uptime | Depends on your computer, power, connection and willingness to leave it running. | Provider infrastructure is intended to stay online, subject to its service terms. |
| Installation | You download the server pack, install Java 17, accept the EULA and configure networking. | Some providers advertise preconfigured Fabric, Java and server files or one-click installation. |
| Updates | You perform backups and replace or migrate files yourself. | A control panel may simplify updates, but you still need to confirm the exact pack release and preserve backups. |
| Resources and location | Limited by your machine and home connection; location is wherever the machine sits. | Choose a plan and region with sufficient RAM and CPU; verify the provider’s actual allocation and location. |
| Recovery | You design and maintain your own backup and rollback process. | Check whether backups, retention and restore tools are included or cost extra. |
| Troubleshooting | You handle Java, Fabric, firewall, router and mod errors. | Support may reduce operational work, but support scope and response times differ by provider. |
Cinderstone Studios identifies BisectHosting as its official server-hosting partner and describes one-click Prominence II installation. That is a hosting arrangement, not a guarantee that every plan, region, price or backup policy is suitable. Before paying, confirm the current Prominence II release offered, Fabric and Java 17 support, allocated resources, data-center region, backup schedule, restore process and cancellation terms.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server exits immediately
- Run
java -versionand confirm Java 17 is the runtime actually used by the start script. - Read the console output and the pack’s
HOW_TO_RUN.mdfile. - Confirm you extracted the server pack completely and are launching from its directory.
- Check that
eula.txtcontainseula=trueafter you have accepted the EULA. - Do not switch to Forge or mix files from a client profile while investigating a Fabric startup error.
A player receives a mod or registry mismatch
- Compare the player’s Prominence II release with the server’s release number.
- Compare Minecraft 1.20.1 and Fabric settings.
- Have the player reinstall the matching client profile rather than copying individual mods from another installation.
- Confirm the server was not updated without updating every client.
Friends cannot connect from outside the house
- Confirm the server is running and listening on the intended port.
- Check the host firewall rule.
- Check that the router forwards the same TCP port to the correct local computer.
- Test from a different network; a local test can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.
- Investigate carrier-grade NAT or other provider restrictions if the forwarding rule is correct but the port remains unreachable.
The world lags during exploration or boss fights
- Observe whether the problem is memory pressure, CPU saturation or slow world generation.
- Confirm Java 17 and the correct Fabric pack before increasing memory.
- Reduce simultaneous heavy activity and test again.
- If the machine has spare RAM, move gradually upward from the initial 6–8 GB range rather than assigning all available memory to Java.
Operational checklist
- Server pack and client pack are from the same release.
- Fabric and Minecraft 1.20.1 are selected for the current release.
- Java 17 is installed and used by the launch script.
- EULA acceptance is recorded in
eula.txt. - Initial memory is approximately 6–8 GB for a small group, with operating-system headroom.
- Firewall and router rules use the server’s actual TCP port, normally 25565.
- Friends have matching launcher profiles.
- A clean backup exists before every pack or configuration update.
- The host machine, network and power plan can remain available for the intended play sessions.
