You can continue an Xbox save on a Windows PC only when that specific game supports Xbox-to-PC save roaming—most clearly through Xbox Play Anywhere—or when its publisher explicitly supports cross-save. Your game progress, the PC installation, and the license to play the PC version are separate. Check each title before switching devices or deleting old data.
Can Xbox saves transfer to PC?
It depends on the game. Microsoft’s rules say progress in a participating Xbox Play Anywhere game is saved with your gamertag, so you can continue on another supported device after signing in. That applies to participating digital games, not every Xbox title. See Microsoft’s Usage Rules for Digital Goods.

For games outside Play Anywhere, Microsoft recommends—but does not require—save roaming between Windows PCs and Xbox consoles. Its requirement for saves to roam between Windows PCs is a separate matter; it does not guarantee a console save will appear in the Windows version. Microsoft’s XR-052 policy explains the distinction.

- Look up the title in the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or the publisher’s support pages.
- Confirm that it has a Windows PC version and whether it supports Xbox Play Anywhere or explicitly offers Xbox-to-PC cross-save.
- Check that the PC version and console version you use are included in that support. A cloud-save label by itself does not establish console-to-PC roaming.
- On both devices, sign in to the account associated with the game and allow any supported synchronization to finish before continuing.
Do not count on a general, user-facing option to download an Xbox cloud save and import it manually. The supported route established by Microsoft’s rules is synchronization for participating games, not a universal save-export process.

Xbox Wire reported on January 21, 2026, that a save-sync indicator was rolling out to PC and handheld devices. Availability may vary, so check the current Xbox app rather than assuming the indicator is present on your device. The same article reported that more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere at that time; that is a dated catalog figure, not a current count. Xbox Wire’s January 2026 update has the announcement.
Does an Xbox purchase give you the PC version?
Not automatically. Owning a console version, having its save, and holding a license for a Windows version are distinct things. The exception is a participating Xbox Play Anywhere title: Microsoft’s rules provide access on compatible Xbox consoles and Windows devices for those titles, subject to the applicable terms.

Before reinstalling, verify the title’s Play Anywhere status, Windows availability, and PC system requirements. For other games, check whether the PC edition is included in your purchase or subscription, or whether you need a separate PC license. A game appearing in an Xbox PC launcher does not by itself prove that an Xbox purchase covers it or that its saves transfer.
How to reinstall eligible games on a Windows PC
Reinstall the compatible Windows edition rather than trying to copy an Xbox console installation into Windows. For an eligible Microsoft purchase, sign in with the account used to buy it and locate the download through Microsoft Store’s library or order history. Microsoft notes that an app or game may be available on one device but not another, so confirm compatibility with the destination PC. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for finding and installing Store downloads.

Moving ordinary files between Windows PCs
If you are replacing one Windows PC with another, Microsoft lists external storage as an option for moving ordinary files. A portable external SSD can be useful for those files, or for game files when the publisher documents a supported method. The Windows file-migration guidance does not establish a way to move Xbox cloud saves, Xbox ownership rights, or a console installation into a PC game. See Microsoft’s Windows PC file-migration instructions.
Do not apply one game’s save-file location or copy procedure to another. Storage locations and protections vary by title, and a local file may not be the authoritative cloud save. Consult the publisher’s instructions and make a backup before replacing or deleting local data.
