You can get South Korean stock-market exposure either by buying a U.S.-listed South Korea ETF through a brokerage account that supports its exchange listing, or by opening an eligible account with a Korean brokerage and buying a Korea-listed ETF directly. The U.S.-listed route is often operationally simpler for investors who can trade U.S. securities; direct Korean-market access depends on broker eligibility and account arrangements. In either case, compare the fund, trading and currency costs, and your tax treatment before placing an order.
Choose a route to the market
Buy a U.S.-listed ETF
If your brokerage account supports U.S. exchange-traded funds, you can buy a South Korea-focused ETF listed in the United States. For example, an SEC filing identifies the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) as listed on NYSE Arca and says it seeks results corresponding generally to an index of South Korean equities. Other U.S.-listed examples identified in SEC filings are the Franklin FTSE South Korea ETF (FLKR) and KraneShares South Korea ETF (KSMX). Direct access means opening an investment account with a suitable Korean financial company and arranging funding, currency conversion, custody, and order access. South Korea abolished its former foreign-investor prior registration requirement effective December 14, 2023. The Financial Services Commission says foreign individuals may use passport numbers, while foreign corporate investors may use legal entity identifiers (LEIs), to open investment accounts and invest in domestically listed securities without first registering with the Financial Supervisory Service. The rule removes that prior registration step; it does not guarantee that every foreign resident can open an account with every Korean broker or access every product. Confirm eligibility, documents, funding, KRW conversion, custody, and applicable local requirements with the broker. The Korea Exchange’s investor guide describes the general route through a licensed Korean brokerage, but its earlier mention of an investor registration certificate predates and is superseded by the 2023 change. Compare the costs before placing an order
There is no universally cheapest route: the total depends on the fund, your broker, how you fund the account, and your tax circumstances. Check the costs that apply to your actual account and order:

- Fund expenses: Check the annual expense ratio and other costs disclosed in the fund’s current prospectus.

- Premium or discount to net asset value (NAV): An ETF’s market price can differ from the value of its holdings. When the underlying Korean market is closed but a U.S.-listed ETF is trading, price discovery may be less direct and premiums or discounts may be larger than for a U.S.-only portfolio. - Currency and transfer costs: If the route requires funding or settling in a currency other than your base currency, check the broker’s exchange rate, markup, and conversion timing. Costs vary by broker and account.
- Taxes and withholding: A fund’s Korean dividend withholding is not the same as your personal tax rate. An SEC-filed prospectus states that Korean issuer dividends are generally subject to 22% withholding before any reduction under an applicable income tax treaty. Place and review the order
- Confirm access: Check that your broker supports the specific exchange listing and that the ETF is available to your account. For a Korea-listed ETF, confirm account eligibility and required arrangements with a Korean brokerage.
- Review the fund: Read the current prospectus and issuer fact sheet. Confirm the index, holdings, concentration, structure, expense ratio, and any currency, leverage, or derivatives policy.
- Calculate your likely total cost: Check fund expenses, broker charges, the live spread, any currency conversion or transfer costs, and relevant tax rules.
- Check trading conditions: Look at the ETF’s market status and live bid and ask before submitting an order. A limit order can help you set the price you are willing to pay, but it may not fill and does not remove market risk.
- Review the execution: After the order, check the fill price and any charges shown by your broker so you can assess the actual cost of the trade.
Understand the main risks
Won exchange-rate movements
Korean shares are denominated in won. If the won falls against your base currency, the translated value of your investment can decline even when local share prices rise. A South Korea ETF concentrates exposure in one national market, rather than spreading it across countries. Export demand and major industries such as semiconductors and technology can affect performance. Political, security, and governance exposure
SEC-filed fund disclosures identify country-specific legal, regulatory, political, and security risks, including tensions involving North Korea. They also flag governance concerns associated with chaebol business groups and controlling shareholders. The nature and degree of exposure can vary with a fund’s holdings. Trading price, liquidity, and market-hours mismatch
You trade ETF shares at market prices, not at a guaranteed NAV. Thin liquidity, volatility, and differences between U.S. ETF trading hours and Korean underlying-market hours can affect spreads and the price relative to NAV.
