Mute someone in Fortnite voice chat

Select your profile icon and open Party chat or Game chat, depending on where you are talking.

Select the participant or their profile in that chat view, then use the available voice control to mute them. Use the same controls to unmute or deafen as needed.

Party chat connects people in a party across Fortnite and listed Epic apps. Game chat connects players in the same island instance when the island creator supports it. A mute affects the voice interaction; it does not submit a report or change who can contact you elsewhere. See Epic’s voice chat options guidance if the labels differ in your client.

Limit who can contact you
To change your broader voice and text chat audience, select your profile icon, open Settings, then Communication. Choose the audience you want:
- Everybody
- Friends, Team Members, and Connections
- Friends Only
- Off
This setting changes communications more broadly than muting one participant. Epic says chat defaults to Off for players whose account indicates they are under 18, and parental controls can restrict changes. Children under 10 are limited to Friends Only. If an option is unavailable, check the account’s age information and parental-control settings. Epic’s communication settings help page has the current guidance.
Report a player for behavior in a match
Use the in-game report flow for a player’s conduct. Epic lists these platform-specific ways to open the menu:

- PC or Mac: press Esc.
- PlayStation: press Options.
- Xbox: press Menu.
- Switch: press +.

Open the menu, choose the three-line menu, then select Report.

Select Submit a report, then A player or sidekick.

Select the player’s name, choose a reason, and accept to submit.
You can also report from a recently played player’s in-game profile or the voice-channel player list: open More options, choose Report, select a reason, and accept. Epic says a submission may help it determine whether action is warranted under its Terms of Service and Code of Conduct; it does not guarantee a particular enforcement outcome. Follow Epic’s player behavior reporting steps if your menu differs.

Report a text conversation or message

Select the profile icon, then Chats.

Select the conversation and open its three-dot menu.

Choose Report chat and submit. In the text-chat window, you can also use its Report button; to report one message, open the adjacent three-dot menu.
Epic says text chat must be on and text reporting enabled for chat contents to be reviewed. A communication restriction that turns text chat off may therefore affect your ability to report chat content through this route. See Epic’s reporting guidance.

Report voice chat
Voice reporting is separate from muting: muting stops you hearing someone, while a voice report sends relevant captured audio for review.

With Voice Reporting on, select your profile icon.

Under Social, select the three-dot control, then choose Report chat.

Submit a report if you want Epic moderators to receive the captured audio.

Epic says Voice Reporting keeps a rolling five-minute window: older audio is deleted. The audio stays on your console or PC unless you submit a report; when you do, the report and audio are sent to Epic moderators. “Epic cannot access any voice chat audio unless Voice Reporting is on and a report has been submitted,” according to Epic’s explanation of voice reporting.
Who can turn voice reporting off?
Epic’s voice-reporting guidance distinguishes age and channel. Voice Reporting is always on for players under 18. Adults can choose Always On or Off When Possible; the latter applies only to Party Channels and turns reporting off only when every party member has selected that option. Game Channels always have voice reporting on. Check Epic’s current voice-reporting help page for the setting’s availability in your account and client.
