Continue through the story to find the other keys, then revisit chests you could not open.
Why a locked chest may not open
Having a key does not mean you can open every locked chest. The game has three named chest keys, and they are not interchangeable. If your current key does not open a chest, treat that as a likely key mismatch—not proof that the chest is bugged.

The three chest keys

The indexed Game8 guide places the Thief’s Key in a treasure chest in the rental rooms at Pilgrim’s Perdition. The guide excerpt does not establish a floor number, prerequisite or additional interaction, so look through the rental rooms rather than relying on an unverified step.
What to do if the chest still will not open
- Try the chest key you currently have.
- If the chest stays locked, assume it may require a different key rather than concluding that it is broken.
- Continue story progression to obtain the Magic Key and Ultimate Key, then revisit chests that were inaccessible earlier.
Does a game update change chest keys?
Square Enix’s update notice, last updated April 8, 2026, lists an April 7 update for Nintendo Switch 2/Switch (version 1.2.0), PS5 (1.003.000), Xbox Series X|S (1.0.5.0), Microsoft Store on Windows (1.0.6.0) and Steam (1.0.1.0). The notice describes fixes for progression checks in Past Hubble and the Labyrinth of Wind; it does not identify a change to locked-chest keys. See Square Enix’s update notice.
