What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You generally can’t play the full current version of Minecraft without signing in to a Microsoft account that has access to the game. You can launch Minecraft without the Minecraft Launcher, but that is different from bypassing sign-in. The official free trial can be played offline after setup, but you must sign in to start it.
What “without logging in” can mean
There are three different situations: playing without an internet connection, avoiding the Minecraft Launcher, or playing without a Microsoft account. The supported options depend on which one you mean.
- No Microsoft account: Minecraft’s account guide says a Microsoft account has been required to play all versions since July 25, 2022. The official guide’s PC steps are to open the Minecraft Launcher, choose Microsoft Login, and sign in with the account that owns the game. Minecraft’s account guide does not document a general way to bypass authentication for the full game.
- No Launcher: Minecraft says its games can be launched without using the Minecraft Launcher. That does not mean sign-in or game ownership requirements are removed; the official download page does not describe this as an account bypass.
- No internet connection: The official free trial supports offline play after setup, but its start instructions require signing in or creating a Microsoft account. The trial’s offline allowance is not evidence that every paid version can be started offline.
If you own the full game
Sign in with the account that owns Minecraft
On Windows, Mac, or Linux, open the Minecraft Launcher and select Microsoft Login. Use the Microsoft account that purchased Minecraft or otherwise has access to it. Minecraft says an owner can start playing after signing in; if the account does not own the game, the Launcher may offer a time-limited demo or the option to buy it.
If the Play button is missing
A missing Play button can mean the wrong Microsoft account is active. Minecraft Help advises checking the signed-in account in both the Minecraft Launcher and Microsoft Store. An applicable PC subscription may also grant access. See Minecraft’s Launcher access troubleshooting guide.

If you want to play offline
What the free trial allows
Minecraft’s free trial requires you to sign in or create a Microsoft account to get connected and launch it. After setup, the trial can be played offline. Minecraft states: “Yes, you can play Minecraft offline during your free trial, but multiplayer servers are disabled.” LAN play is allowed.
The official trial page describes the trial as approximately 100 minutes of in-game time, or about five in-game days, with slight variation by device. The page does not display a publication date, so treat the duration as an estimate rather than a guaranteed allowance. Details are on the Minecraft Free Trial page.

- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
What this does not establish for a paid copy
The trial’s offline instructions apply to the trial, not necessarily to every paid game edition or launcher setup. Minecraft’s official material cited here does not establish that a full paid installation can be opened without authentication, nor does it document how offline access behaves for every version.
If you have an old Mojang account or Java world
Mojang account migration ended on December 18, 2023. Minecraft Help says an existing local Java single-player world is not playable until Java Edition is purchased using a Microsoft account. A saved world by itself does not provide access to the game. For current account recovery or purchase-status questions, use Minecraft Help’s Mojang account and migration information.

If you want to play multiplayer
Offline single-player guidance does not provide server access. Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance requires Microsoft account sign-in, and players need the matching Java or Bedrock edition and a suitable internet or LAN connection. Console online play may also require an active platform online subscription. Check the multiplayer requirements and Minecraft’s guide to playing on a server.

Choose the legitimate route
- You own the full game: Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the license. If the game does not appear, check the accounts in the Launcher and Microsoft Store.
- You do not own it: Use the official free trial, which requires sign-in, or purchase the game through Minecraft’s official download page.
- You need to start without the Launcher: Minecraft says launching without that app is possible, but you still need the appropriate account access.
- You want to play offline: The cited offline instructions cover the free trial after setup; they do not promise offline access for every paid installation.
