To open the main Grand Gate in Hollow Knight: Silksong, ring the five Old Bellshrines in The Marrow, Greymoor, Bellhart, Shellwood and Far Fields. They can be activated in any order. Then return to the gate beneath the Citadel, play the Needolin at its mechanism and defeat the Last Judge.
What the Grand Gate objective requires
The objective begins after Hornet speaks with the Chapel Maid in Bone Bottom. Its checklist names the five regions and directs you to return to the Grand Gate after activating all five Bellshrines. As the Tall Pilgrim puts it: “’Tis the bells, they say! The holy bells upon the path that open the way!” (Hollow Knight Wiki: Grand Gate; Hollow Knight Wiki: Old Bellshrine)

The shrines may be rung in any order. If you pass one while exploring, activating it then can save a return trip later in Act 1. The quest guide also describes each Bellshrine as a checkpoint with a nearby bench. (Hollow Knight Wiki: Old Bellshrine)

The Marrow
Find the shrine along the main route through the Marrow’s bone corridors. It is commonly the first of the five players encounter.

Search the wind-swept heights, beyond the upper levels of the church-like structure.

The Bellshrine is in town. The guide recommends freeing Bellhart from Widow before pursuing it.

These are regional landmarks rather than room-by-room directions. If you are unsure which shrine remains, check your map: Bellshrine pins mark the shrines still needed for the objective, while the Grand Gate pin identifies the OPEN: Grand Gate objective. (Hollow Knight Wiki: Grand Gate)

At the gate mechanism, play the Needolin when prompted.

The Grand Gate is the main route, but not the only way into the Citadel: an alternate east-side route runs through Sinner’s Road and Exhaust Organ. The opening sequence has also received patch fixes, so if the mechanism does not respond as expected, check that the game is updated and confirm the five shrine pins are cleared.
