Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSteam does not offer a general setting that compresses an installed game. To save space, check whether a particular game has optional language files or installed DLC you do not need; to free a full drive, move games to another Steam library. Update settings can defer downloads, but they do not shrink existing installations.
First, identify what you want to change
Download size, installed size, and space available on a particular drive are different problems. Steam’s update controls change when updates download, not how much room an installed game takes. Moving an installation shifts its storage to another drive; it does not reduce the game’s total footprint. Any potential reduction from language files or DLC depends on the individual game, and Steam’s cited guidance does not quantify savings.

| Option | What it changes | Does it shrink installed games? |
|---|---|---|
| Change automatic update behavior | When updates download | No |
| Review language files or DLC | Potentially optional, game-specific content | Possibly, depending on the title and what it lets you remove |
| Move games to another library | Which drive holds the installation | No |
| Clear the download cache | Download or launch troubleshooting | No |
Change when Steam updates a game
To defer automatic downloads, open the game’s Library menu, choose Properties, then Updates. Steam’s listed choices include “Always keep this game updated,” “Only update this game when I launch it,” and “High Priority – Always auto-update this game before others.” The launch-time choice can postpone an update, but the game will need to update when you launch it if an update is required. See Steam Support’s guide to managing downloads and updates for download scheduling, queue order, and active downloads in the Download Manager.
Check for optional content in the game
Language settings
For a game with multiple supported languages, open Library > game menu > Properties > Language and select the language you need. Steam notes that supported language files may need to be downloaded. That does not mean switching languages always removes files already downloaded, so check the game’s storage use rather than assuming a change will reclaim space. Language support and file behavior vary by title. Steam’s language-settings instructions explain the option.

Installed DLC
On the game’s Library page or in its Properties, open the DLC area to see owned downloadable content and whether it is installed. Review the specific game before changing anything: the status screen does not establish that every DLC item can be uninstalled or how much space it uses. Steam Support explains how to find a game’s DLC and check its installation status.
Move a game off a full drive
If another drive has room, add or select a Steam library location in Steam > Settings > Storage, select the drive and games, then choose Move. Steam says existing games can be moved without uninstalling them. The move frees space on the original drive while keeping the games installed elsewhere; it does not decrease their total installed size. Follow Steam’s instructions for moving a Steam installation and games.

Do not clear the download cache to free game space
Clearing Steam’s download cache is intended to help with download or launch problems, not to reduce installed game files. Steam states: “This process will not affect your currently installed games, but you will need to log into Steam afterwards.” Use it as troubleshooting, not storage cleanup. Steam Support’s cache instructions explain the process.

If free space keeps dropping after you play, game downloads may not be the only cause. Steam lists updates, saved-game files, and multiplayer custom content as possible reasons available disk space decreases. Check the drive’s actual usage and the particular game’s content before deleting files. See Steam’s guidance on disk space decreasing after a game is run.
