When the empowered blade is available, select it at the door and the seal can be opened. Searching every side passage for a separate “Spellseal key” will not solve the early version of this problem, because the guides identify the gate as story-controlled.
How to start Lost Rites
If you have not formally started the quest, complete these steps first. They establish the quest state and give you the navigation tool used for its trial areas.

Why the item menu appears empty
Players commonly interpret the empty menu as a sign that they missed a chest, defeated the wrong enemy, or need to inspect a nearby altar. - Verify the quest. Confirm that Lost Rites was started through Captain Brant’s

dialogue at the Stardrop Inn. - Finish the available early trial. Obtain the Proving Ground Compass and use it to reveal the quest’s challenge areas.
- Test the door once. Interact with the Spellseal Door. If the item menu contains no usable entry, stop searching the immediate area for a key.
- Return to the main story. Follow the primary quest chain until the Empowered Godsbane Blade becomes available. The published guides connect this to later story progression; they do not support a separate cave pickup.
- Confirm the inventory item. Look specifically for the item named Empowered Godsbane Blade, not merely a Godsbane-related weapon or another sword.
- Travel back to the sealed entrance. Re-enter the Lost Rites challenge area and interact with the same Spellseal Door.
- Select the empowered blade. Choose it in the door’s item prompt. The seal should respond to the required story item, allowing you to continue.
If the item prompt still rejects the blade, leave the area, make sure the main-story objective that awarded it is complete, and approach the door again. Avoid discarding, storing, or replacing the required item while troubleshooting.
First trial versus Spellseal Doors
These two parts of Lost Rites are easy to conflate because they appear in the same quest. They have different requirements.

The door lets me interact, but no item can be selected
This is the normal pre-requirement symptom described by the guides. Leave the cave and continue the main quest until the Empowered Godsbane Blade is awarded. There is no supported alternate item to substitute at this stage.

I searched the whole area and found no key
Stop looking for a local key. The empty item menu is evidence of a progression lock, and the available instructions point to the empowered blade rather than a chest, enemy drop, or environmental switch.

I have progressed the quest but cannot find the compass
Return to the first Lost Rites trial and confirm that its reward was collected. The Proving Ground Compass is obtained from that initial trial and then used from the map to reveal challenge areas. It is separate from the weapon required by the sealed door.
I reached a guide’s named milestone, but the door remains shut
Check the actual inventory and active objectives rather than relying on the milestone’s name. VGC links the blade with A New Godsway, while AllThingsHow describes an empowerment step involving Convergence and 15 Wyrmslife Crystals for Ambrosius. Because those accounts do not establish one definitive sequence, complete whatever objective the game currently lists and verify that the item’s full name is present.
I am playing the original Dark Arisen
Check the title screen and quest list. The Lost Rites Spellseal Door instructions discussed here apply to Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. The original Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is a different game and should not be used as the basis for this quest route.
