To use a Steam Free Weekend, open the participating game’s current Steam store page, confirm the deadline shown for that offer, and start the available play or install action before the promotion closes. Steam then adds a temporary package to your account so you can download and play during the event. Installing it does not turn the paid game into a permanent purchase.
What a Steam Free Weekend actually gives you
A Steam Free Weekend is a time-limited promotion for an otherwise paid game. During the event, Steam lets eligible accounts download and play the game’s base version without buying it first. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes this as “a time-limited promotion that allows players to temporarily access and play an eligible game for free—typically over a long four-day weekend.”

The promotion is attached to the paid game’s normal store listing. Steam uses the base game’s App ID and depots for the temporary access package. That is different from a demo, which is distributed as a separate demo app. The download may therefore resemble the full game, but the permission to launch it is controlled by the event dates.
Do not confuse this offer with a free-to-play game. Steam Support defines free-to-play titles as games that can be downloaded and played at no cost without a temporary event deadline. A Free Weekend instead gives a paid title a short access window; when that window closes, continued play normally requires purchasing the full version.

Check that the offer is live before you download
Use the game’s own store page
Search for the game in Steam and open its current store page rather than relying on an old promotion post, a search snippet, or a screenshot. Read the promotion callout near the normal purchase information. It should identify the event as a Free Weekend or equivalent temporary free-play promotion.
Participating games and their controls can change. The page you see may show a play, install, or similarly worded action depending on your account, device, language, and whether Steam is already installed. There is no single button label that every reader will see, so follow the live action displayed for your account.
Record the specific end time
Use the deadline printed on that game’s offer as the practical cutoff. Steam describes Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific through Monday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific as typical Free Weekend timing, not as a guarantee for every event. A publisher may choose different dates or times, and the displayed countdown can vary by region and daylight-saving rules.

Convert the deadline to your local time before starting a large download. If the page shows a date and a clock, treat that information as more authoritative than a third-party calendar. Promotions can disappear from discovery pages while the offer is still active, so save the game’s store page or add it to your browser bookmarks if you need to return to it.

Check your account and storage first
- Sign in to the Steam account on which you intend to play. Access is associated with that account, not with a computer shared by several users.
- Confirm that your drive has enough free space for the game and any updates. A Free Weekend does not reduce the normal download size of the base game.
- Use a stable connection if the event is short. A download that begins near the deadline may not finish in time for meaningful play.
How to claim and install the game
- Open the participating game’s live Steam store page. Verify the title and read the current Free Weekend message. Do not assume that a similarly named demo, DLC item, or sequel is the participating product.
- Check the displayed expiration time. Note the date, clock, and time zone. If the offer has already ended, the temporary play action may be replaced by the normal purchase controls.
- Choose the available play or install action. Steam’s official guidance establishes that the temporary package is offered from the base game’s store page, but it does not prescribe one universal consumer-facing label. Select the action Steam currently presents rather than looking for a button with a specific name.
- Allow Steam to open or switch to the desktop client. The store page may hand the request to the Steam client. If the client is not installed or you are signed out, complete that setup and sign in to the same account you used on the store page.
- Review the installation dialog. Pick the library location, confirm the required disk space, and start the download. Choose a different library drive if the selected location cannot hold the game.
- Wait for the download and any first-run update. Steam may download additional files after the initial package. Keep the client online while it validates or updates the installation.
- Launch from your Steam Library. Once the client reports that the game is ready, use its library entry to start it. The temporary license is checked by Steam, so launching through an unrelated shortcut may not work if the client is closed or offline.
- Play before the posted deadline. Starting the download, creating a desktop shortcut, or leaving the game installed does not extend the event. Plan your session around the end time shown on the offer page.
If the store page sends you to the client but no download starts, look in the Library for the same base game. Steam can place the temporary title there without using identical wording on every page. If it is absent, return to the live store listing and repeat the action while signed in to the intended account.
How Steam schedules Free Weekends
Steam’s developer guidance says Free Weekends typically run from Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific until Monday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. That four-day pattern is a common format, not a standing promise to players. An individual event can use another schedule, and the offer page’s displayed deadline takes precedence.
Steam recommends that developers run an event for at least four days so players have time to download and engage with the game. This is guidance for organizers, not a minimum that every promotion must meet. A shorter or differently timed event should be treated according to its own store-page clock.
Steamworks guidance also says an eligible game can run a Free Weekend once per calendar year. That is an eligibility rule for the promotion system; it does not mean every game will offer one annually or that a previous event will recur on the same dates.

What happens when the Free Weekend ends
At the event’s end, Steam removes the temporary access package from the store offer. The game can remain visible in your library, but the post-event state is not ownership: Steam’s player-facing explanation says the available action is to uninstall unless you purchase the full version.
Leaving the files on your drive does not preserve the license. Reinstalling the package, launching an old shortcut, or copying the game to another computer cannot extend the promotion. The account must have a permanent license to continue playing after the event has closed.
Your installation may therefore occupy disk space even though it can no longer launch. Uninstall it from the library when you do not plan to buy, or keep the files only if you expect to purchase soon and want to avoid downloading them again. Steam’s documentation does not establish a universal rule for whether a particular game preserves saves or progress when you later buy it, so check that game’s own support information before relying on a continuation.
If you decide to continue, purchase the paid version from the current store page while signed in to the account that used the Free Weekend. Steam says a discount may remain available after the event, but discounts, prices, currencies, and end dates vary by promotion. Read the live purchase panel instead of assuming that every Free Weekend includes a sale.

Free Weekend, free-to-play, and demo: the differences

A permanent giveaway or “free to keep” promotion is another category. Its claim and ownership rules are not the same as a Free Weekend, so do not infer permanent ownership from the word “free” alone. Read the exact offer language on the platform hosting it.

Start early enough to test the game
Download time depends on the game’s size, your connection, Steam’s current demand, and any updates released during the event. Starting several hours before the deadline gives you time to complete installation, launch the game, and resolve a missing prerequisite. Starting minutes before expiration risks spending the entire remaining window downloading.
Use the displayed clock, not an estimate
Do not calculate the end from the phrase “this weekend” or from the usual Thursday-to-Monday pattern. Promotions can use a different cutoff, and regional clock conversions can be wrong if daylight-saving changes occur. The offer’s date and time are the reference you should record.

Keep the client available while downloading
Pause other large downloads if bandwidth is limited, and leave Steam running so it can finish validation and updates. If your computer sleeps or loses its connection, resume the download and recheck the remaining event time before assuming you can still play.

Troubleshooting when the install option is missing
The page shows only a purchase option
First, refresh the live store page and confirm the event has not expired. Check that you opened the base game named in the promotion, not downloadable content, a bundle, or a separate demo. If the deadline has passed, Steam may correctly show only the normal purchase controls.
The browser does not open Steam
Open the Steam desktop client yourself, sign in, and revisit the game’s store page from inside the client. The temporary package is administered through Steam, so a browser session signed into a different account can produce confusing results.
The game is in the library but will not download
Open the library entry and check the selected library drive and available space. If Steam reports a missing license or no longer offers installation, compare the current time with the event deadline. A listing can remain after access has closed without retaining download permission.

Restart the Steam client, allow pending updates to finish, and launch from the library. Verify that you are online and using the account that claimed the event. If the offer is still active and the client continues to reject the license, use the game’s or Steam’s current support channel; the exact error message will determine whether the problem is account, installation, or game-specific.
You installed it on one computer and want to use another
Install the Steam client on the second computer and sign in to the same account. The promotion is tied to the account’s temporary license, not to the original machine. You still must finish any download and launch before the event deadline, regardless of when the files were copied or when the first computer was used.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “installed” means “owned.” A Free Weekend grants temporary access only.
- Relying on a typical Monday cutoff. The game’s own displayed deadline controls.
- Waiting for the download to finish near expiration. Download time consumes the same event window as play time.
- Using the wrong account. A family member’s or shared computer’s account may not have the temporary license.
- Confusing a demo with the full event package. A demo is a separate application and may contain different content.
- Expecting a discount automatically. Steam may pair a sale with a Free Weekend, but the price and sale period are promotion-specific.
- Assuming progress is guaranteed to carry over. Steam’s general Free Weekend documentation does not promise universal save or progress retention after purchase.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the game’s live store page explicitly advertising a Free Weekend?
- What exact date, time, and time zone does that page display?
- Are you signed in to the Steam account you will use to play?
- Does the selected library have enough free space for the full base-game download and updates?
- Can you finish downloading and test-launching before the displayed cutoff?
- If you enjoy it, does the current store page show a purchase price or optional discount you accept?
Following those checks lets you claim the temporary access while it is live, install it through the Steam client, and make an informed decision before the promotion closes.
