Press Win + G to open the Xbox Game Bar overlay on a Windows PC. Press the same shortcut again to hide it. The Windows key is the key with the Windows logo—not the Xbox button on a controller.
What Win + G opens
Win + G opens Xbox Game Bar, an overlay designed primarily for games and supported apps. Depending on your Windows version, Game Bar app version, permissions, and installed widgets, it may provide controls for captures, audio, performance, social features, and more.
Microsoft describes the shortcut in the context of an open game, so do not assume it behaves identically over every desktop app or type of protected content. It does not start recording by itself; it opens the Game Bar controls.

Open Game Bar with an Xbox controller
- Connect the Xbox controller to your PC and confirm Windows recognizes it.
- Start the game or supported app.
- Press the controller’s Xbox button.
The setting that allows the controller’s Xbox button to open Game Bar must be enabled. Because the wording and Settings location can vary between Windows 10, Windows 11, and different interface updates, open Settings and search for Xbox Game Bar. Look for the option that enables opening Game Bar with the Xbox button.
This behavior should not be assumed for every third-party controller. If the keyboard shortcut works but the controller button does not, check the controller connection and the Game Bar controller setting first.

Turn on Xbox Game Bar if Win + G does nothing
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Use the Settings search box and search for Xbox Game Bar or xbox.
- Open the setting for enabling Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn on the option allowing Game Bar to record game clips, chat, and receive game invites.
- Return to the game and press Win + G again.
The exact label may differ by Windows edition, language, or interface update. If the feature is enabled but still missing, check the Microsoft Store for Xbox Game Bar updates; Microsoft notes that some functionality depends on the installed Game Bar app version.

Game Bar recordings are generally saved as MP4 files in VideosCaptures. Screenshots are saved as PNG files in the Captures folder.

Game Bar and Xbox mode are different
Xbox Game Bar is the floating overlay for captures, audio, performance tools, and other widgets. Xbox mode is a separate, controller-optimized full-screen Windows gaming experience. Microsoft documents Xbox mode for Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, subject to supported devices and markets. When available and enabled, it uses Win + F11 and can also be reached through Game Bar or Task View.
Do not use Win + F11 if you simply want the Game Bar overlay.

Why the Xbox overlay may not appear
- Game Bar is disabled: Enable it through Settings search as described above.
- The wrong button is being used: The keyboard shortcut uses the Windows-logo key. The controller alternative uses the Xbox button.
- The app is unsupported for the requested function: Capture behavior can differ between games, desktop apps, protected video, and other content.
- Game Bar or Windows needs an update: Check for Xbox Game Bar updates in the Microsoft Store and install available Windows updates.
- A keyboard utility or another application may be intercepting the shortcut: Close or temporarily disable software that remaps Windows-key shortcuts, then test again.
- Full-screen compatibility may be involved: Some games, anti-cheat systems, or exclusive full-screen modes can interfere with overlays. As a diagnostic test, try borderless or windowed mode; this is not a guaranteed fix.
- The laptop keyboard may use special function layers: Do not assume Fn + G is a universal substitute. Test the normal Windows key or an external keyboard.
