How to Optimize a Minecraft Server on Linux for Better Performance

Diagnose the real bottleneck before changing settings, then tune Paper's view and simulation distances, entity broadcasting, Linux transport and Java heap without trading one kind of lag for another.

The fastest way to reduce Linux Minecraft server lag is to measure the bottleneck before changing settings. Track tick time, CPU saturation, garbage-collection pauses, heap occupancy, chunk-generation and disk latency, and network traffic under a repeatable workload. Then adjust one control at a time: keep Paper’s native Linux transport enabled, tune view-distance and simulation-distance independently, restrict entity broadcasting when packet volume is the problem, and size the Java heap so the operating system still has memory for its own work.

Start with a measurement, not a preset

There is no universal “best” configuration for a Minecraft server. A lightly populated survival world, a redstone-heavy technical server, and a server generating new terrain for many players stress different resources. Plugins, world size, concurrent chunk generation, CPU architecture, storage, Java version, Paper build, and network conditions all change the result.

Define the lag you are trying to reproduce. For example, use the same player route through an unexplored area, trigger the same farm, or repeat the same event with the same number of players. Restart the server cleanly, run that workload, record the metrics below, make one change, and repeat it. Keep a copy of the original server.properties and JVM command so every change can be reversed.

Record Why it matters Useful observation
Server, Java and Paper versions Behavior and available settings vary by build. Write the exact versions, not only “latest.”
Peak and average player count Simulation, network and chunk work scale with players. Note the count during the reproduced lag.
World size and unexplored areas New terrain can create heavy CPU and storage load. Separate exploration lag from lag in an established area.
Tick timings Shows whether the server is completing game ticks on time. Look for sustained slow ticks, not a single spike.
Heap occupancy and GC pauses Distinguishes allocation pressure from general CPU work. Correlate pauses with visible freezes.
CPU saturation and per-process use A full core can cap the main server thread even when total CPU appears moderate. Check the process and individual cores.
Disk latency and wait Chunk saves, loads and generation can stall on storage. Compare normal play with exploration or a save event.
Network throughput, packet loss and latency Separates delayed delivery from a server that is failing to tick. Observe both the host interface and player symptoms.

On Linux, tools such as top or htop show CPU and memory pressure; free -h shows available memory and swap; and storage tools such as iostat can reveal high wait time. Use the profiler or timing facilities appropriate to your Paper build for tick attribution. The goal is correlation: a setting is useful only if the same workload improves without creating a new problem.

Identify which resource is limiting performance

Tick or CPU-bound work

If tick time rises while one or more CPU cores are saturated, the main thread is doing too much work. Common triggers include large entity populations, redstone machines, plugin tasks, path-finding, and simultaneous chunk generation. Lowering a distance setting can reduce work, but it will not repair a plugin that performs an expensive operation every tick. Capture timings before and after the change so you can see whether the expensive task actually declined.

Garbage collection and memory pressure

Short, regular pauses that coincide with high allocation and a heap repeatedly approaching its limit indicate memory pressure. A large heap is not automatically a cure: Paper’s documentation warns that “more memory does not mean better performance above a certain point.” A heap that is too small causes frequent collection; an unnecessarily large heap increases the memory footprint and can make collection work more expensive. Leave headroom for Linux, native allocations, file cache and any other services on the machine.

Chunk and storage I/O

Exploring new terrain, teleporting across an ungenerated world, or saving many chunks can expose storage latency. If CPU is not saturated but disk wait climbs during the event, distance changes alone may not solve the stall. Reproduce the issue with a known route and compare established terrain with fresh generation. Avoid running unrelated backup, indexing or update jobs during peak play.

Network delivery and entity traffic

Players may report delayed movement or entities disappearing while server tick timings remain healthy. Check interface throughput, latency and packet loss, then inspect how much world and entity data is being sent. Lowering view-distance or the entity broadcast range can reduce delivery volume, but neither setting fixes a saturated CPU or a faulty network path.

Keep Paper’s native Linux transport enabled

In server.properties, keep:

use-native-transport=true

Paper documents this setting as providing “a performance boost for Linux servers.” It selects the native transport path rather than the fallback implementation. Keep it enabled unless a controlled compatibility test demonstrates a problem with your deployment. If you must disable it to isolate an issue, record the result and restore the setting when the test is complete; changing it at the same time as distance or JVM settings makes the outcome impossible to attribute.

Tune view distance and simulation distance separately

Both settings use a radius measured in chunks, but they control different work. Changing one does not substitute for changing the other.

Setting Paper-documented range or default What it controls Player-visible trade-off
view-distance Default 10; valid range 3–32 chunks Radius of world data sent to clients Players receive and see less distant terrain at lower values.
simulation-distance Valid range 3–32 chunks Radius in which living entities are updated Mobs, farms and other living-entity behavior updates over a smaller area at lower values.

Choosing a view distance

Start conservatively for the actual player count and hardware rather than assuming the default is optimal. A lower value reduces the amount of world data that must be loaded around each player and sent over the network. It can also reduce chunk-related work, especially when many players are spread across the map. The cost is visible: players see less distant terrain and may notice chunks arriving closer to them.

Raise the value only after the repeatable workload shows spare tick, CPU and network capacity. Test the same route with the same players, because a setting that works at a central base may fail when everyone travels in different directions. Paper permits values from 3 through 32 chunks; the valid range is not a recommendation to use either extreme.

Choosing a simulation distance

simulation-distance governs where living entities are updated. Lowering it often changes gameplay more directly than lowering view distance: farms outside the radius may stop progressing, mobs may not receive AI updates as far away, and other living-entity behavior can change. If the diagnosis points to entity ticking or AI CPU work, test a lower simulation radius while checking farms and mob behavior with the server’s owners.

Do not lower simulation distance merely because network traffic is high; entity updates and packet delivery are separate problems. Conversely, lowering view distance will not necessarily stop a distant farm from consuming tick time if that farm remains inside the simulation radius.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change one radius at a time

  1. Save a copy of server.properties.
  2. Change only view-distance or only simulation-distance.
  3. Restart cleanly so the server applies the setting consistently.
  4. Repeat the same player route or event.
  5. Compare tick time, CPU use, chunk activity, network traffic and gameplay effects.
  6. Keep the change only if it addresses the diagnosed bottleneck without unacceptable visibility or simulation changes.

Use entity broadcast range when entity packets are the problem

Paper’s entity-broadcast-range-percentage is a separate control. It determines how close an entity must be before it is sent to a client. Higher values send entities from farther away and can increase lag because clients receive and render more entities.

Use this setting when measurements point to entity packet volume or client rendering, not as a substitute for diagnosing a CPU-heavy plugin, redstone machine or mob farm. A lower value makes entities disappear at shorter distances from a player, so test visibility around bases, combat areas and farms. Change it independently from the two distance settings, and document the value so players understand why distant mobs or animals are no longer visible.

Configure Java and the heap deliberately

What Aikar’s flags are—and are not

Paper publishes an Aikar’s-flags example as a G1 garbage collector baseline. Its core options include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
-Xms10G -Xmx10G -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200

The example also contains additional G1-related options. Treat the documented line as a starting point for a measured deployment, not a guarantee that every server should use a 10 GB heap or identical goals. Match -Xms and -Xmx only when the machine can reserve that memory while retaining operating-system headroom.

Size memory for the workload and the whole host

Count the memory available to the machine, not just the amount you want Minecraft to use. Reserve capacity for Linux itself, native JVM allocations, file cache, monitoring, backups, proxies and any other services. If the host starts swapping, latency can become severe even though the Java heap appears large enough.

Paper notes that Minecraft has “an extremely high memory allocation rate, ranging to at least 800MB/second on a 30 player server!” That figure is documentation context, not a promise that every player count, world or plugin set behaves identically. Watch allocation and collection behavior in your own workload. A heap that fills rapidly and pauses frequently may need a carefully sized increase; a heap with ample unused space will not benefit simply from being made larger.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Apply JVM changes safely

  1. Record the Java version, complete startup command and current heap settings.
  2. Change the heap or collector options without changing distances or plugins in the same test.
  3. Restart cleanly and run the defined workload.
  4. Compare pause duration and frequency, heap occupancy, tick time and total host memory.
  5. Revert if pauses, swapping, startup behavior or overall responsiveness worsen.

Never copy a memory value from another server without checking physical RAM and resident services. A 10 GB example on a dedicated machine is not evidence that a shared or smaller host should allocate 10 GB to Java.

A repeatable optimization workflow

  1. Freeze the baseline. Record versions, player count, world and plugin state, distances, entity broadcast range, JVM arguments and the exact lag scenario.
  2. Reproduce the symptom. Use a route, event or player action that can be repeated after each restart.
  3. Classify the bottleneck. Decide whether tick/CPU work, garbage collection, chunk I/O or network delivery changes at the same moment as the lag.
  4. Confirm the Linux transport setting. Verify use-native-transport=true before interpreting network tests.
  5. Select one lever. Use view distance for world-data delivery, simulation distance for living-entity updates, entity broadcast range for entity delivery, or JVM settings for allocation and pause behavior.
  6. Restart and retest. Apply the change with a clean restart and the same workload.
  7. Check side effects. Inspect farm output, mob behavior, distant terrain visibility, client rendering, memory headroom and network quality.
  8. Keep a rollback. Restore the previous file or command immediately if one metric improves while gameplay or another resource worsens.

Decision table: which control should you change?

Observed problem First control to test What not to assume
Players receive too much world data; network traffic rises with player spread. Lower view-distance within Paper’s 3–32 range. It will not fix a plugin that consumes the main thread.
Mobs, farms or AI create sustained tick work. Lower simulation-distance and inspect the entity source. Farms outside the radius will behave exactly as before.
Entity packets and client rendering dominate traffic. Lower entity-broadcast-range-percentage. It is not a cure for CPU-heavy redstone or plugin code.
Long pauses correlate with allocation and high heap occupancy. Review heap sizing and G1 settings. More RAM automatically improves performance.
Linux network path appears inefficient. Verify use-native-transport=true. Changing transport, JVM and distances together will identify nothing.
Exploration causes disk wait and chunk stalls. Measure storage latency and concurrent generation. Distance settings alone remove storage latency.

Common failure modes and recovery

“I set every distance to the minimum and it still lags.”

That result suggests the bottleneck may be a plugin, redstone system, entity buildup, garbage collection or storage rather than the amount of data sent to clients. Restore a player-acceptable distance, capture timings during the reproduced event, and isolate the expensive task instead of continuing to lower visibility.

“More heap made pauses worse.”

Check whether the host is short of memory or swapping and whether the larger heap is collecting less often but for longer. Compare pause frequency and duration, not only the maximum heap number. Return to the last stable allocation and retest with enough headroom for Linux and native processes.

“Lower simulation distance broke a farm.”

That is an expected gameplay trade-off: living entities outside the radius receive fewer updates. Raise the value until the farm works acceptably, relocate or redesign the farm, or accept the reduced simulation in exchange for the measured tick savings.

“Lower view distance fixed lag but players dislike it.”

Test whether the same improvement comes from reducing entity broadcast range or simulation distance instead. Those settings affect different workloads and produce different player-visible changes. Keep the smallest change that addresses the measured source of load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The server is smooth, but players still see rubber-banding.”

Compare server tick timings with network latency, packet loss and interface utilization. If ticks remain on time while delivery degrades, investigate the network path and entity or chunk traffic rather than adding heap or changing garbage-collector flags.

Operational checklist

  • Write down exact server, Java and Paper builds.
  • Record player count, world activity and the repeatable lag scenario.
  • Measure tick time, per-core CPU, heap occupancy, GC pauses, disk wait and network behavior.
  • Keep use-native-transport=true on Linux unless a compatibility test proves otherwise.
  • Use view-distance for world-data delivery; Paper’s default is 10 and its documented range is 3–32.
  • Use simulation-distance for living-entity updates; its documented range is 3–32.
  • Use entity-broadcast-range-percentage when entity delivery or client rendering is the measured issue.
  • Treat Aikar’s G1GC flags as a baseline, not a universal preset.
  • Leave memory for Linux, native allocations, cache and other services.
  • Change one variable, restart cleanly, repeat the same workload and keep a rollback copy.
