Wordfence is usually the better choice for a WordPress-only site that needs deep, WordPress-specific visibility and a capable free baseline. Sucuri is usually the better choice when you need traffic filtered at the cloud edge, CDN and DDoS features, protection for more than one CMS, and managed malware cleanup. The difference is architectural rather than a universal performance score: Wordfence’s principal firewall runs on the WordPress installation, while Sucuri’s paid platform places its firewall in front of the hosting server. Your traffic pattern, incident-response skills, and willingness to change DNS should decide the purchase.

Those labels describe fit, not a laboratory ranking. A well-configured edge firewall and a well-maintained endpoint firewall can both be effective; the surrounding hosting, patching, backups, and administrator practices still determine the outcome.

Wordfence: a WordPress-native security stack

Sucuri: a cloud security platform with WordPress support
Sucuri protects WordPress and other CMS platforms through a combination of remote monitoring, scanning, and its Website Security Platform. The platform routes a site’s traffic through a cloud firewall before the hosting server sees it. It also bundles CDN and performance functions, DDoS mitigation, monitoring, and managed malware cleanup. A WordPress plugin can provide local visibility, but the edge firewall and cleanup service are the parts that distinguish the paid platform from a plugin-only deployment.
This distinction matters when someone says “Sucuri plugin.” Installing a plugin does not, by itself, put every request behind Sucuri’s cloud network. The platform requires traffic redirection, normally through DNS or equivalent proxy onboarding, so confirm which service a quotation or checkout page includes.
Firewall architecture: endpoint versus cloud edge
How Wordfence handles a request
Wordfence’s PHP endpoint firewall operates directly on the WordPress installation. The web server and PHP runtime receive the request, then the firewall applies its rules with access to WordPress context. That placement lets it inspect application behavior and local files in detail. It also means malicious requests have already consumed some origin resources by the time PHP evaluates them. On a small or moderately busy site, that overhead may be acceptable; on a resource-constrained host facing sustained abuse, it is an important design limitation.
How Sucuri handles a request
When the Sucuri Platform is enabled, traffic is redirected through the cloud firewall before it arrives at the hosting server. The edge can reject unwanted traffic without making the origin execute WordPress for every blocked request. The same architecture enables CDN delivery and DDoS mitigation. It is especially useful when the host should remain hidden or when a sudden traffic flood could exhaust CPU, memory, PHP workers, or bandwidth.
What the architecture means in practice
- Choose endpoint filtering when application-level context and WordPress-specific decisions are your priority and you can operate the origin securely.
- Choose edge filtering when preserving origin capacity, absorbing hostile traffic upstream, or protecting several CMS types is more important.
- Neither design replaces updates, least-privilege accounts, reliable backups, or a recovery plan. An edge service cannot repair vulnerable code that remains installed, and an endpoint plugin cannot compensate for an exposed, overloaded host.
Scanning and vulnerability intelligence
Wordfence scanning
Wordfence documents server-side scanning of WordPress core files, themes, and plugins. It checks file integrity, compares code with known-good versions, looks for malware signatures, and reports vulnerabilities. The vulnerability feed is valuable for sites that need to know which installed extension is exposed, not just whether a remote scanner can see suspicious output.
Timing is the key qualification. Wordfence Free receives new firewall rules and malware signatures after a 30-day delay. Premium receives those updates in real time. That does not mean the free scanner is inactive for 30 days; it means newly added intelligence can arrive later than it does for paying customers. If your site is a high-value target or you cannot patch promptly, the delay deserves a place in the risk calculation.

Sucuri scanning
Sucuri documents remote scanning for publicly visible indicators and server-side scanning on premium services. Its monitoring looks for malicious JavaScript, redirects, link injections, iframes, and other signs of compromise. Remote checks are useful for seeing what visitors and search engines receive, while server-side checks can inspect the files that generate that output. Verify the service tier before assuming both forms of scanning are included.

Use Wordfence when the central question is, “Which WordPress file, plugin, or theme changed, and which vulnerability affects this installation?” Use Sucuri when the central question is, “What is the public site serving, and can an external service monitor and clean it?” Running one scanner does not make the other perspective redundant: local integrity and external behavior can reveal different stages of an intrusion.
Malware cleanup and incident response
Wordfence’s self-service model
Wordfence offers one-click remediation for supported findings and paid professional cleaning options. This model suits an administrator who can review a finding, take a backup, test the change, and investigate persistence. Self-service is often cheaper and faster for a straightforward infected file, but the owner remains responsible for scope, backups, credential rotation, and checking that the attacker has not left another entry point.
Sucuri’s managed model
Sucuri’s platform advertises managed, analyst-led cleanup and unlimited removal requests under platform plans. In that arrangement, the customer submits the incident and the provider’s analysts perform the removal work. Read the plan terms carefully: “unlimited removal requests” describes the advertised request allowance, not a promise that every incident has the same turnaround time or complexity. Keep independent backups and administrative access even when cleanup is outsourced.
Detection is not cleanup
A scanner can identify a suspicious file without removing the attacker’s access. After any confirmed compromise, change hosting, database, WordPress, FTP or SSH, and administrator credentials; update core, themes, and plugins; review newly created users and scheduled tasks; and restore only from a backup whose integrity you can establish. A managed service can reduce the labor, but it does not remove the need to understand what was changed.
Login protection and day-to-day controls
Wordfence documents two-factor authentication, brute-force protection, rate limiting, vulnerability alerts, live traffic, file-integrity monitoring, and Wordfence Central. These controls let a WordPress administrator see authentication abuse, restrict repeated attempts, require a second factor, and coordinate settings across sites.

Sucuri’s comparison lists brute-force protection, CAPTCHA, monitoring, and alerting. The platform adds controls at the edge, so abusive login traffic can be challenged or blocked before it reaches WordPress. That is useful when login attacks are numerous enough to consume PHP workers, although legitimate users still need a clear challenge path.
Whichever product you choose, begin with administrator accounts: remove unused accounts, require unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and test recovery codes before enforcing the policy. Security alerts are only useful when someone owns the inbox, understands the severity, and has authority to act.
Cross-CMS coverage, CDN, and DDoS needs
Wordfence is designed specifically for WordPress. That specialization is an advantage if every site in your portfolio is WordPress and your team wants one vocabulary for plugin vulnerabilities, core integrity, and WordPress events.
Sucuri’s platform covers WordPress and other CMS types. Its cloud delivery layer also includes CDN and DDoS capabilities. Select this model when a single edge policy should protect a mixed-CMS portfolio, when origin performance during traffic spikes is a concern, or when your hosting provider is not equipped to absorb large bursts. The platform’s value is broader than a WordPress plugin’s feature checklist because it changes where traffic is handled.

These are annual, per-site figures where stated, not a complete cost-of-ownership calculation. Budget for a second administrator, backup storage, incident response, DNS or CDN changes, and the staff time needed to review alerts. Prices, plan names, installation counts, and intelligence delays can change, so verify the current checkout and service terms before committing.
How to choose by site situation
A single blog or community site with a hands-on administrator
Start with Wordfence Free if you can apply updates quickly, monitor alerts, and accept the 30-day delay for newly added rules and signatures. Upgrade to Premium when real-time intelligence is more important than the annual fee, or when the site’s exposure makes a delayed feed unacceptable.

A revenue-critical WordPress site on a limited host
Compare the cost of an origin outage with an edge service. Sucuri’s cloud firewall can reject traffic before it consumes origin resources and adds CDN and DDoS features. Wordfence still provides valuable local visibility, but an endpoint firewall alone cannot shield a host from every volumetric request.

An agency managing WordPress and other CMS platforms
Sucuri’s cross-CMS coverage and edge policy may simplify operations. If every client is WordPress and the agency’s differentiator is plugin-level vulnerability response, Wordfence Central and WordPress-native scanning may be more useful. Document the exception cases rather than forcing every client onto one architecture.
A site that is already compromised
Prioritize response capability over a feature-count comparison. If your team can preserve evidence and remediate safely, Wordfence’s self-service tools and professional cleaning options may fit. If you need analysts to perform removal and want the advertised unlimited-removal-request model, evaluate a Sucuri platform plan. In either case, isolate the incident, preserve a known-good backup, and rotate credentials after cleanup.
Installation and hardening checklist
Deploying Wordfence
- In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New, search for Wordfence, install the official plugin, and activate it.
- Open the Wordfence settings and complete the initial scan. Review findings by severity instead of deleting files automatically.
- Enable two-factor authentication for administrators, configure brute-force and rate-limit settings, and confirm that legitimate editors can still log in.
- Review Wordfence > Firewall and let the firewall optimize for the server configuration when the option is offered. Record the previous setting so you can roll back safely.
- Schedule scans and assign an owner for email alerts. Test an alert with a controlled change to a non-critical file.
- For multiple WordPress sites, connect them to Wordfence Central and standardize update, alert, and administrator policies.
Deploying the Sucuri Platform
- Create the platform account and add the site, confirming whether the selected plan includes remote scanning, server-side scanning, CDN, DDoS mitigation, and managed cleanup.
- Complete the provider’s onboarding instructions to redirect site traffic through the cloud firewall. Plan the DNS change, note the previous records, and lower the DNS TTL ahead of a scheduled migration when practical.
- Verify that the origin server accepts traffic from the platform while direct-origin access is restricted according to the provider’s guidance.
- Test the homepage, administration area, forms, media uploads, cron jobs, APIs, and payment or membership flows after the change.
- Review monitoring and alert recipients, then document how to pause or reverse the proxy if an application feature fails.
Exact labels can change between product versions and hosting environments. Take a backup of configuration and DNS records before changing a firewall or proxy, and perform the cutover during a period when you can observe logs.

Wordfence scans time out or consume too many resources
Lower scan intensity, schedule scans outside peak traffic, and ask the host to raise PHP limits only when you understand the effect on other sites. Remove abandoned plugins and themes first; scanning unnecessary code increases work and attack surface. If the origin is under active flood traffic, an endpoint firewall may not be enough—consider placing an edge service in front of it.

Check whether the relevant rule or signature was added within the 30-day feed delay. Apply the vendor’s temporary mitigation, patch or remove the affected extension, and consider Premium for real-time updates. Do not treat the delay as permission to postpone routine updates.

Traffic is blocked after enabling Sucuri
Check DNS resolution, SSL mode, origin allowlists, caching rules, and application firewall events. Test from an administrator connection and an ordinary visitor connection. Roll back the DNS change only after recording the working records, then correct the rule or origin configuration before attempting the cutover again.
The site looks clean but remains compromised
Compare external behavior with server-side files, inspect administrator accounts and scheduled tasks, and review access logs around the first alert. A remote scan can miss a dormant backdoor, while a local scan can miss malicious content generated only for certain visitors. Escalate to managed cleanup when your team cannot establish a trustworthy baseline.
Questions to settle before paying
- Is every protected site WordPress, or do you need one control plane for multiple CMS products?
- Can your host absorb abusive requests, or must filtering happen before the origin?
- Who will review alerts nights and weekends?
- Do you need real-time vulnerability intelligence, or is a 30-day delay acceptable for your risk profile?
- Will your team perform cleanup, or should analyst-led remediation be part of the contract?
- Have you budgeted for annual per-site licensing, DNS work, backups, and recovery time?
What the published adoption figures do—and do not—tell you
Wordfence reported more than 5 million active installations on its 2025 comparison and Free product page. The same comparison cited more than 800,000 Sucuri users. Those figures indicate substantial adoption, but they are not independent measurements of detection rates, uptime, or suitability for your host. Treat them as context, not as a substitute for architecture and response requirements.

Pick Wordfence when your priority is a WordPress-native control set: detailed core, theme, and plugin scanning; file-integrity checks; vulnerability alerts; login protection; and the option to start free. Pay for Premium when real-time threat-feed updates matter, and consider a managed Wordfence tier when you want professional cleaning rather than only self-service remediation.
Pick Sucuri when the primary risk is reaching the origin at all: traffic floods, DDoS exposure, mixed CMS infrastructure, or a team that wants managed cleanup. Its cloud firewall, CDN, monitoring, and analyst-led response address a different layer of the stack than an endpoint plugin.
