The fastest Magento (Adobe Commerce) stores in 2026 are built as a measured stack, not fixed with one plugin. Start with a supported PHP, web server, database, and search baseline; make full-page caching work for catalog and CMS traffic; separate and size Redis or Valkey services; keep private content out of shared responses; then tune PHP workers, the database, static assets, APIs, and the network using store-specific measurements. Varnish is Adobe’s recommended production reverse proxy for full-page caching, while Redis is commonly used for sessions and, where the exact release supports it, application cache.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
There is no universal Magento response-time or Core Web Vitals number to promise. Request mix, cache-hit rate, catalog size, extensions, theme code, search behavior, database load, and traffic spikes determine the result. The procedure below gives you a repeatable way to find and remove the bottleneck without making pages uncacheable or trading one queue for another.

What “fast Magento” means in 2026
Performance has several observable layers. A shopper experiences the time to first byte, the time until the main product content appears, layout stability while images and fonts load, and the delay before an interaction responds. Your operations team also cares about throughput, tail latency during promotions, cache-hit ratios, queue depth, error rates, and recovery when a node or cache service fails.
Magento performance work therefore follows a dependency order. A slow database or an uncached product page cannot be repaired reliably with browser-minification settings. Establish the supported runtime and search services first, then verify application and HTTP caches, then static delivery, and finally frontend and API details.

The five layers to optimize
- Supported platform: the exact Commerce edition and patch, PHP and PHP-FPM, Nginx, MySQL, and Elasticsearch or OpenSearch versions permitted by that release.
- Application cache: configuration, layout, block, and other Magento-generated data held in an appropriate backend.
- HTTP full-page cache: a reverse proxy such as Varnish serving reusable anonymous responses without invoking PHP.
- Static-content delivery: versioned CSS, JavaScript, fonts, and images delivered with long-lived browser and edge-cache policies.
- Measured behavior: private-content requests, GraphQL cache keys, uncached endpoints, database queries, queues, and Core Web Vitals observed under realistic traffic.
Change one layer at a time and retain a before-and-after record of hit rates, origin requests, response-time percentiles, CPU, memory, database load, and error rates. A lower average can conceal a worse 95th or 99th percentile during a sale.
Establish a supported, measurable baseline
Record the Commerce edition and exact patch before selecting any service version. Adobe’s production recommendations include PHP with PHP-FPM, Nginx, MySQL, and Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, plus Varnish for full-page caching and Redis for sessions and, in suitable deployments, the default cache. Compatibility is release-specific; confirm the system-requirements and cache-backend notes for the patch you actually run rather than copying a version list from another release.

Inventory before changing configuration
- Commerce edition, exact release and applied security patches.
- PHP version, enabled extensions, PHP-FPM pool settings, and OPcache status.
- Nginx worker and connection settings, TLS termination point, and compression policy.
- MySQL version, buffer allocation, slow-query log status, replication or failover design, and database host latency.
- Elasticsearch or OpenSearch version, shard layout, heap allocation, indexing schedule, and query latency.
- Varnish version and VCL source, cache storage, purge method, and whether TLS is terminated before it.
- Redis or Valkey version, memory limit, eviction policy, persistence, network location, and which Magento data each instance stores.
- CDN or edge behavior, DNS and load-balancer topology, static asset versioning, and image formats.
- Installed extensions, custom modules, theme overrides, scheduled jobs, import feeds, and GraphQL clients.
Capture a baseline
Choose representative home, category, product, CMS, search, cart, account, and GraphQL requests. Test anonymous and signed-in states, a warm cache and a cold cache, desktop and mobile viewports, and normal and peak-like concurrency. Record time to first byte, total response time, status codes, response size, cache status, database and search latency, PHP-FPM queue depth, CPU, memory, and network throughput. In the browser, capture Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift for the key templates. These measurements describe your store; a generic “Magento is under one second” claim does not.
Make full-page caching serve the pages shoppers actually visit
Adobe describes caching as one of the most effective ways to improve website performance. In production, its documentation recommends Varnish as the reverse proxy for full-page caching. The proxy can serve a cached category, product, or CMS response without starting a Magento request, reducing PHP, database, and search work.
Choose the right page-cache mode
The built-in page-cache mechanism can store responses in the filesystem, database, or Redis. That option is useful for development, a small single node, or a release where Varnish is not yet available, but it does not provide the same reverse-proxy position and horizontal-cache behavior as a properly configured Varnish tier. Use the production recommendation for your traffic and availability requirements, and verify that the backend is supported by your exact patch.
Keep catalog and CMS pages cacheable
A single layout block marked cacheable="false" can make the entire page uncacheable. Inspect layout XML and custom modules whenever cache hits fall or origin traffic rises. Category, product, and CMS pages should not be made uncacheable merely to display a small dynamic fragment; doing so forces every visitor through PHP and the database.
Recommended Free Tools
Instead, isolate the dynamic fragment as private content or load it asynchronously. Test the final response headers and the rendered page: the public shell should be identical for visitors who are allowed to share it, while cart totals, customer names, addresses, and other user-specific values arrive through a private-content mechanism.

Design invalidation deliberately
Define what purges a product, category, CMS page, URL tag, or entire site. Connect catalog, price, stock, and content changes to the narrowest purge that is correct. A purge that is too broad creates an origin stampede; one that is too narrow serves stale information. Exercise purges during a catalog import and verify that a fresh request repopulates the expected cache layer.
Size Redis or Valkey and separate its jobs
Redis is commonly used for Magento sessions and, where supported, the default application cache. In a multi-server or scaling deployment, Adobe recommends a separate Redis instance for sessions and another for the default cache. Separation prevents a session burst, cache flush, or eviction event from displacing the other workload.
Calculate memory from the store, not a template
Application-cache memory grows with the number of cached pages, SKUs, and store views. Session memory depends on session duration, concurrent shoppers, cart size, and your cart-abandonment policy. Monitor used memory, key count, hit and miss rates, evictions, fragmentation, and command latency while those quantities change. Set a headroom target for imports, promotions, and failover rather than allowing the service to reach its limit.
Do not treat a larger cache as automatically faster. An eviction storm, persistence pause, or CPU-saturated cache can make every web node wait. Choose an eviction policy consistent with the data stored, test restart and restore behavior, and alert before memory pressure becomes customer-visible.
Account for network latency
When Redis or Valkey is remote, the network channel between web nodes and the cache service must carry the read and write volume without becoming a bottleneck. Measure round-trip latency, bandwidth, packet loss, connection counts, and TLS overhead if encryption is used. Place cache services close to the application nodes, use persistent connections where supported, and avoid routing cache traffic through a congested public path.
Check release compatibility
Adobe’s cache-backend reference contains release-specific caveats, including a note that Redis is not supported for Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 or certain later patch levels. Do not standardize on Redis or Valkey from a generic architecture diagram: confirm the exact patch’s supported backend, migration guidance, and operational requirements first. If the release changes the supported backend, plan the cutover, warm-up, and rollback before upgrading production.
Protect cacheability while handling private content
Public catalog and category data can be shared among visitors. Carts, wishlists, customer names, addresses, and similar values cannot. Keep private content to the smallest practical portion of the page so the product or category shell remains a reusable response.

Audit the private-content boundary
- List every block or endpoint that reads customer, cart, session, or authorization state.
- Confirm that those values are not rendered into a response intended for shared caching.
- Load account and cart fragments after the public shell, using the platform’s private-content mechanism or a deliberately uncached endpoint.
- Test two users with different carts and addresses through the same cache and CDN path; neither must see the other’s data.
- Check logout, login, currency, store-view, and permission changes for stale private fragments.
Personalization that changes the whole document should be challenged: it multiplies cache variants and origin work. Prefer a common document with small, user-specific islands unless the business requirement genuinely needs a separate page.
Make GraphQL and APIs cache-efficient
GraphQL responses can be cached, but every cache-key factor creates another variant. Adobe’s GraphQL guidance warns that unnecessary variables and headers fragment the key space and reduce hit rates.
Review cache-key dimensions
- Collect the variables, headers, cookies, store view, currency, customer context, and authorization state used by each high-volume query.
- Remove dimensions that do not change the returned data. Do not include a timestamp, random identifier, or broad cookie value solely because it is available.
- Keep genuinely different results distinct, such as store view, currency, customer group, or permission-sensitive data.
- Measure hit rate and unique-key growth after each change; a higher hit rate with incorrect data is a failure, not an optimization.
Separate public product and category queries from customer-specific queries at the client and cache layers. Apply rate limits and query-cost controls to prevent a single integration from consuming all PHP workers or database connections.
Tune PHP-FPM, Nginx, MySQL, and search together
PHP-FPM worker capacity
PHP workers are a finite queue. Set the pool from measured memory per worker, available RAM, expected concurrency, and the capacity of MySQL, search, and downstream services. Too few workers leave requests waiting; too many create CPU contention, swap, database connection storms, and longer tail latency. Watch active processes, listen queue, max-children-reached events, worker restarts, and request duration during cache misses.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Keep OPcache enabled and sized for the deployed codebase, and restart or reload it intentionally after deployments. Confirm that production settings do not enable development-only template or configuration behavior.
Nginx and TLS
Use Nginx to serve static files directly and to pass dynamic requests only where required. Verify keep-alive behavior, connection limits, compression, request buffering, and the location of TLS termination. A load balancer that terminates TLS before Varnish can simplify the cache tier, but ensure the original scheme and host are preserved so Magento generates correct URLs and cache keys.
MySQL
Use the slow-query log and query-duration percentiles to find expensive product, pricing, checkout, and extension queries. Check indexes, lock waits, buffer allocation, connection counts, temporary tables, and disk latency. Fix a repeated inefficient query before adding PHP workers: more application concurrency can simply create more database contention.

Elasticsearch or OpenSearch
Search and layered navigation can dominate resource use on large catalogs. Monitor query latency, heap pressure, garbage collection, shard balance, indexing queues, and refresh behavior. Keep search capacity available during imports and promotions, and test the exact Commerce/search version combination required by your release.

Once the origin and cache path are healthy, optimize what the browser downloads and executes. Build and deploy static content with the platform’s versioning so browsers and CDNs can retain immutable files safely. Serve appropriately sized responsive images, reserve image dimensions to prevent layout shifts, preload only the true above-the-fold hero asset, and defer nonessential JavaScript.
Largest Contentful Paint
- Ensure the main product or category image is discoverable in the initial HTML or preload path.
- Use an origin or edge cache close to shoppers and avoid routing the hero image through a slow application endpoint.
- Reduce server wait first; a fast browser cannot compensate for an uncached HTML response.
Interaction to Next Paint
- Break up long JavaScript tasks and remove scripts that are not needed on the current template.
- Delay chat, analytics, recommendation, and experimentation code until it cannot block the first interaction.
- Measure checkout and search interactions separately from content pages.
Cumulative Layout Shift
- Reserve width and height for images, banners, embeds, and promotional modules.
- Keep late-loading personalization from pushing the product title, price, or add-to-cart controls.
- Test responsive breakpoints and consent banners on real mobile devices.
Use field data where available and supplement it with controlled lab runs. A passing lab score on a warm cache does not prove that a first-time mobile shopper on a cold cache will have the same experience.
Choose an architecture for your traffic and availability target
A single built-in cache, Varnish in front of Commerce, and a multi-node or two-tier design address different constraints. Compare them using the same criteria rather than selecting the most elaborate diagram.
| Architecture | Cache-hit potential | Operational overhead | Horizontal scalability | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single Commerce node with built-in cache | Good for reusable pages on one host; limited by the node’s resources | Lowest; fewer services and failure domains | Limited; cache and application scale together | Small stores, development, or an interim production step |
| Commerce nodes behind Varnish | High for anonymous catalog and CMS traffic when pages remain cacheable | Requires VCL, purge handling, monitoring, and capacity planning | Application nodes can scale behind a load balancer | Production stores where page-cache reuse is a primary performance lever |
| Multi-node, two-tier cache design | High when edge and origin caches are warmed and keys are consistent | Highest; multiple cache tiers, invalidation paths, failover, and observability | Strongest for high traffic and availability targets | Large catalogs, promotions, and stores needing redundancy |
Adobe’s reference architecture describes multiple cache engines, high-traffic database options, and a two-tier Varnish configuration with SSL-terminating load balancing for high availability. Treat that as a design pattern, not a drop-in topology: validate cache-key consistency, purge propagation, health checks, and failure behavior with your own store.
Use CPU guidance as a planning heuristic
Adobe’s hardware guidance says one CPU core can serve around two, sometimes up to four, Commerce requests effectively. This is a planning heuristic, not a capacity guarantee. Request complexity, extension code, cache-hit rate, database behavior, and search load can move the result substantially. Load-test the slowest important request at the concurrency you expect, then size headroom for deploys, imports, and failover.

- Freeze the baseline: record release, topology, cache status, Core Web Vitals, percentile latency, throughput, and error rates.
- Verify support: check PHP, Nginx, MySQL, search, Varnish, and Redis or Valkey compatibility for the exact patch.
- Fix origin blockers: resolve slow queries, search saturation, PHP-FPM queueing, memory pressure, and network bottlenecks.
- Enable the correct cache layers: application cache, production full-page cache, and static-content caching in that order.
- Audit cacheability: find accidental
cacheable="false"blocks, uncached catalog routes, incorrect cookies, and overly broad purges. - Separate services: split session and default-cache workloads where the release and deployment model support it; size memory and network together.
- Protect private data: move cart, account, and other personalized fragments out of shared responses and test cross-user isolation.
- Reduce API fragmentation: remove unnecessary GraphQL cache-key variables and headers while retaining every dimension that changes data.
- Optimize the browser path: fix image priority, JavaScript execution, layout dimensions, fonts, and edge delivery.
- Re-test realistic traffic: warm and cold caches, anonymous and authenticated sessions, mobile devices, imports, and promotion-like spikes.
- Document rollback: retain prior VCL, cache settings, pool limits, and backend configuration so a change can be reversed without a prolonged purge.

Traffic spikes cause timeouts even with Varnish
Measure the miss rate and purge pattern first. A promotion that purges the whole catalog can send every request to PHP at once. Verify Varnish capacity, backend connection limits, PHP-FPM queue depth, database locks, search latency, and Redis network saturation. Warm critical URLs in a controlled manner after a purge.
Redis shows high misses or evictions
Identify which instance and keyspace are affected. Check memory sizing against pages, SKUs, store views, sessions, and abandonment duration; inspect fragmentation and eviction policy; then verify network latency and command time. Increasing memory without separating competing workloads may only postpone the next eviction event.

Maintenance after the first speed pass
Performance is not a one-time setting. Re-run the baseline after catalog growth, new store views, extension or theme changes, search reindexing, checkout changes, and traffic-pattern shifts. Keep dashboards for cache hits and misses, origin request rate, Varnish errors, Redis memory and latency, PHP-FPM queues, database slow queries, search health, network saturation, and Core Web Vitals by template.
Include cacheability and private-content tests in deployment checks. A release is not complete until anonymous catalog pages remain shareable, customer data remains isolated, purges are timely, and cold-cache behavior stays within the capacity you planned.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should Magento use Varnish or Redis for speed?
They solve different problems. Varnish is the recommended production reverse proxy for reusable full-page responses; Redis or Valkey is used for application data and sessions where the exact Commerce release supports that backend. Many production designs use both, with separate Redis workloads when scaling requires it.
Can I guarantee a specific Magento page-load time or Core Web Vitals score in 2026?
No. Official guidance does not publish a universal Magento response-time or Core Web Vitals figure. Measure your own templates under warm and cold cache, anonymous and authenticated sessions, mobile conditions, and peak-like concurrency.
Why did adding one dynamic block make an entire page slow?
A layout block marked cacheable="false" can make the whole page uncacheable. Keep the public page cacheable and load the small personalized fragment through private content or a deliberately uncached request.
