There is no universal “best” NVIDIA Control Panel setup. The right configuration depends on your game, rendering API, monitor refresh rate, G-SYNC or VRR support, GPU and CPU workload, and whether you value maximum FPS, low latency, image quality, quiet operation, or battery life.

For most GeForce users, the safest approach is conservative Global Settings plus targeted Program Settings profiles. Leave major image-quality decisions to the game, use NVIDIA Reflex when a game supports it, configure G-SYNC with a frame cap slightly below the display’s maximum refresh rate, and measure changes instead of assuming every “maximum performance” tweak helps.

Before changing NVIDIA Control Panel settings

  1. Update your driver through the official NVIDIA driver download page or the NVIDIA App.
  2. Confirm your monitor’s native resolution and highest refresh rate in Windows and in NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → Change resolution.
  3. Check whether your monitor supports G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible VRR.
  4. Record a baseline: average FPS, 1% lows, frametime consistency, GPU utilization, CPU utilization, GPU clock, temperature, power draw, and latency if the game reports it.
  5. Change one setting at a time. Save the original value or use Restore on the relevant profile if a change causes problems.

Right-click the Windows desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel. Open Manage 3D settings, then choose Global Settings for broad defaults or Program Settings for one game. Select the game executable if necessary, make the change, click Apply, and restart the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Per-game profiles are preferable because a Reflex-supported game, an older DirectX title, a competitive game, and a video player do not necessarily benefit from the same driver behavior. NVIDIA documents both global and application-specific profiles in its 3D application settings reference.

Safe baseline settings for most desktop gaming PCs

Setting Recommended starting point Why
Preferred refresh rate Highest available Lets supported games use the monitor’s fastest configured mode. Verify it in Windows and in-game too.
Monitor technology G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible when supported; otherwise Fixed Refresh Rate Matches the display’s synchronization technology.
Low Latency Mode Off globally Use On or Ultra only for selected games without Reflex after testing.
Max Frame Rate Off globally Apply a per-game cap for VRR, lower temperatures, power savings, or steadier frame pacing.
Power management mode Normal, Optimal Power, or driver-controlled default Avoids unnecessary heat, fan noise, and power use.
Shader Cache Size Driver default or a reasonably large limit Retains compiled shaders and can reduce repeat compilation stutter.
Texture filtering – Quality Quality Provides a sensible image-quality/performance balance.
Texture filtering optimizations Defaults Change only for a specific diagnostic or deliberate image-quality trade-off.
Vertical Sync Use application setting globally Synchronization needs differ between uncapped esports, VRR, and individual games.
Antialiasing Application-controlled Modern games generally provide better, more predictable control.
PhysX processor Auto-select Manual GPU selection rarely helps a normal single-GPU system.
Threaded optimization Auto Best general choice outside specific OpenGL troubleshooting.
Image Scaling Off unless intentionally upscaling Can raise FPS by rendering fewer pixels, but changes image quality.

These recommendations align with NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings documentation. They are starting points, not performance guarantees.

Choose a profile for your goal

General gaming and image quality

  • Texture filtering – Quality: Quality.
  • Antialiasing: Application-controlled.
  • Low Latency Mode: Off unless a non-Reflex game shows a measurable improvement.
  • Power management mode: Driver-controlled, Normal, or Optimal Power.
  • Shader Cache Size: Default or a large available value.
  • Max Frame Rate: Off unless you need a cap.
  • V-SYNC: Application-controlled globally.

This avoids applying aggressive power or latency behavior to every 3D application, including older games, creative software, and background applications.

Maximum FPS

Use a per-game profile rather than changing the entire system:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Set Power management mode to Prefer maximum performance only if the game shows inappropriate clock drops or testing demonstrates a benefit.
  • Leave Low Latency Mode Off when throughput matters more than latency.
  • Leave Max Frame Rate Off unless a cap improves stability or stops unnecessary rendering.
  • Keep texture filtering at Quality unless you knowingly accept a small image-quality trade-off.

The large FPS gains usually come from the game itself: resolution, DLSS or another upscaler, ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, view distance, frame generation, and CPU-heavy simulation settings. Prefer maximum performance can increase power use, temperature, and fan noise; NVIDIA describes it as useful for incorrect clock throttling and latency-sensitive situations, not as a guaranteed FPS multiplier. See NVIDIA’s Power Management Mode guidance.

Lowest input latency without NVIDIA Reflex

For a competitive game that does not offer Reflex, start with this per-game configuration:

  • Low Latency Mode: On; test Ultra if the game is GPU-bound and frametimes remain stable.
  • Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance, but keep it per-game.
  • Max Frame Rate: Off for an uncapped setup, or use a tested cap for steadier frametimes.
  • V-SYNC: Usually Off if minimum latency is the priority and tearing is acceptable.
  • G-SYNC: Optional. If enabled, use the VRR configuration below instead of assuming an uncapped esports profile.

NVIDIA says Low Latency Mode limits how many frames the CPU prepares before GPU processing. On limits queued frames to one, while Ultra submits frames as close to GPU use as possible. It is most relevant in some GPU-bound scenarios; DirectX 12 and Vulkan games may manage queuing through their own engines. Ultra is not automatically best for CPU-bound games or every title. NVIDIA explains the feature in its Low Latency Mode overview.

Games with NVIDIA Reflex

Enable NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency in the game when it is available, then begin with that game’s Control Panel Low Latency Mode set to Off. Reflex synchronizes CPU and GPU rendering through the game engine and is generally the preferred integrated solution. Do not blindly stack Control Panel Ultra on top of Reflex.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Prefer maximum performance only when testing shows unstable GPU clocks or a measurable latency benefit. Add a frame cap for VRR, thermals, consistency, or power control—not because every Reflex game requires one. Reflex behavior varies by title, so validate the result in the actual game. See NVIDIA’s Reflex documentation.

Configure G-SYNC and VRR correctly

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → Set up G-SYNC.
  2. Enable G-SYNC for Full screen mode, or for Windowed and full screen mode if you need borderless-window support.
  3. Select the correct display.
  4. Open Display → Change resolution and select the monitor’s highest refresh rate.
  5. Under Manage 3D settings, confirm Monitor Technology is G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible for the relevant profile.
  6. Set a frame cap slightly below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate. Practical starting points include 141 FPS on a 144 Hz display and 162 FPS on a 165 Hz display, but the exact offset is not a universal requirement.
  7. For a tear-free starting configuration, enable Vertical Sync in the NVIDIA Control Panel for the game profile. Test the game’s own V-SYNC setting according to the title and window mode.

NVIDIA describes G-SYNC as a way to reduce tearing and stutter while minimizing latency, and recommends keeping frame rate slightly below the display’s maximum refresh rate so the system remains inside the VRR range. Its G-SYNC setup instructions distinguish full-screen and windowed/full-screen operation.

Competitive players who accept tearing may prefer an uncapped, V-SYNC-off configuration. G-SYNC users seeking smooth, tear-free output generally need a different synchronization strategy. The correct choice depends on your priority and the game’s frame-rate behavior.

If G-SYNC is not working

  • Confirm the monitor is using its intended refresh rate and that G-SYNC is enabled in the monitor’s own menu when required.
  • Check the cable and connection; the display’s supported G-SYNC path can depend on the monitor and connection type.
  • Make sure the correct monitor is selected in Set up G-SYNC.
  • Test exclusive full-screen mode first if windowed mode is unstable.
  • Check whether a second display or hybrid-graphics mode changes behavior.
  • On a laptop, verify that the game is rendering on the GeForce GPU.
  • Ensure the frame cap is below the VRR ceiling and that V-SYNC settings are not contradictory.

G-SYNC Compatible validation does not guarantee identical behavior on every monitor. NVIDIA’s variable-refresh documentation explains the relevant monitor technology options.

Important settings explained

Max Frame Rate

NVIDIA’s current reference documentation lists a selectable range of 20–1,000 FPS, although actual behavior can vary by driver, game, display, and rendering mode. Use it to stay inside a VRR range, reduce heat and power, stop menu runaway FPS, or match a stable performance ceiling. Test the in-game limiter too; NVIDIA’s limiter is not automatically superior in every title.

Power management mode

  • Normal, Optimal Power, or driver-controlled: Best general choice.
  • Prefer maximum performance: Use for a specific game with clock-throttling symptoms, stutter linked to clock changes, or measurable latency improvements.
  • Prefer consistent performance: A specialist tuning option, not a normal gaming default.

A high-performance mode can keep the GPU at higher frequencies, but may increase heat, noise, and energy use.

Shader Cache Size

The shader cache stores compiled shaders so later launches do not need to compile them again. Do not disable it for normal gaming. Use the driver default or a large limit if disk space allows; unlimited is not automatically better, and a small cache can evict frequently used shaders.

Stutter immediately after a driver update may be temporary because installing a new driver can delete the cache. Let the game rebuild it before deciding that the driver is defective. Clearing the cache can help when it is corrupted, but it also guarantees another period of compilation.

Texture filtering and antialiasing

Quality is the best general texture-filtering setting. Performance and High Performance trade image quality for a preference toward frame rate; High Quality prioritizes image quality. In most modern games, the FPS difference is far smaller than changing resolution, ray tracing, shadows, or upscaling. Leave antialiasing application-controlled unless a specific legacy title requires an override.

Image Scaling

NVIDIA Image Scaling raises performance by rendering at a lower resolution and upscaling with sharpening. It is not a free improvement to native-resolution image quality. Prefer a suitable in-game DLSS, XeSS, or FSR implementation where available, and avoid stacking multiple sharpening filters.

PhysX, OpenGL, and threaded settings

  • PhysX processor: Auto-select is appropriate for normal single-GPU systems. Forcing the GPU is not a universal optimization.
  • OpenGL rendering GPU: Auto-select unless a particular application is using the wrong adapter.
  • Threaded optimization: Auto unless troubleshooting a specific OpenGL title.
  • CUDA – GPUs: Leave available GPUs selected unless an application-specific workflow requires otherwise.

These are compatibility or specialist controls, not modern DirectX/Vulkan FPS switches.

Display settings outside Manage 3D settings

Change resolution

Verify the native resolution, maximum refresh rate, color depth, RGB output where available, full dynamic range, and HDR state in both Windows and the display’s own menu. Choosing a lower refresh rate can make a high-refresh monitor feel incorrectly configured even when the 3D profile is perfect.

Adjust desktop size and position

No scaling preserves a 1:1 image where possible. Aspect ratio prevents stretched 4:3 or custom-resolution content. Full-screen scaling stretches lower-resolution content. Choosing GPU or display scaling depends on the monitor, resolution, and desired behavior; scaling does not automatically increase FPS.

Laptop-specific optimization

Gaming laptops add Optimus, Advanced Optimus, Dynamic Boost, Battery Boost, WhisperMode, internal-display limitations, and thermal constraints. NVIDIA describes Advanced Optimus as dynamically switching between integrated and GeForce graphics to favor performance during GPU-accelerated work while reducing power use during basic tasks.

  • Use Optimal Power or the driver default for ordinary battery use.
  • Use Battery Boost or WhisperMode when supported and when quieter, cooler operation matters more than maximum FPS.
  • Do not use Prefer maximum performance globally; it can raise temperature and reduce battery life.
  • Check which GPU drives the internal and external displays.
  • Remember that Battery Boost, WhisperMode, an in-game cap, and the NVIDIA frame limiter can all impose limits; the lowest active limit may govern.
  • For external high-refresh monitors, verify the cable, display output, VRR support, and whether the connection bypasses or passes through hybrid graphics.

If a laptop game has low GPU usage, confirm that it is assigned to the high-performance GPU in Windows Graphics settings or the NVIDIA App before changing obscure Control Panel options.

Diagnose the bottleneck before optimizing

CPU-bound game

If GPU utilization is low while one or more CPU threads are saturated, lowering texture-filtering quality or forcing maximum GPU clocks will not solve the main problem. Reduce crowds, simulation distance, view distance, physics, and object density in the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPU-bound game

If the GPU is near full utilization, reduce resolution, ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, or other expensive graphics settings, or choose a suitable upscaling mode. Low Latency Mode may be more relevant, but it still should be tested rather than assumed to improve FPS.

How to test whether a setting helped

  1. Restore the game profile to defaults.
  2. Use the same scene, benchmark, resolution, graphics settings, driver version, background applications, and frame cap.
  3. Change one setting.
  4. Run long enough to reproduce traversal and shader-compilation behavior, not just a short menu test.
  5. Relaunch or reboot when required by the driver or game.
  6. Compare average FPS, 1% lows, frametime graph, GPU and CPU utilization, clock speed, temperature, power draw, and input latency.
  7. Keep the change only if it improves your actual goal: latency, consistency, quality, temperature, noise, or battery life.

NVIDIA FrameView can report FPS, 1% lows, frametime-related consistency, power, and supported PC-latency metrics. PC Latency is not total mouse-to-photon latency because it does not include every part of the input and display chain.

NVIDIA App versus NVIDIA Control Panel

NVIDIA is gradually moving some Control Panel functions into the NVIDIA App. The app can handle driver installation, game optimization, overlay metrics, display features, and newer NVIDIA functionality, while some display, multi-monitor, or legacy options may still require Control Panel depending on the installed release.

Use the NVIDIA App for drivers, supported game optimization, overlay metrics, and newer NVIDIA features. Use Control Panel when the required option has not migrated or when the setting is still exposed there. Avoid changing the same option in multiple places without checking which setting has priority; labels and locations can change between app and driver versions.

Common myths and mistakes

  • “Set everything to maximum performance.” This can increase heat, noise, and power use while delivering little or no FPS improvement.
  • “Low Latency Mode Ultra is always best.” It may be irrelevant in CPU-bound, DX12, Vulkan, or Reflex-supported games and can alter throughput or frame pacing.
  • “Unlimited shader cache fixes stutter.” Cache size cannot repair asset streaming, CPU stalls, shader bugs, storage bottlenecks, or bad patches.
  • “V-SYNC should always be Off.” That may suit an uncapped esports profile, but it permits tearing and is not the usual tear-free G-SYNC starting point.
  • “Control Panel settings substantially boost FPS.” Major gains generally come from in-game resolution, upscaling, ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, frame generation, and CPU-heavy settings.
  • “One global profile works for every game.” Per-game profiles are safer, especially when mixing Reflex and non-Reflex games.

Quick copyable presets

Goal Starting preset
General gaming Low Latency Off; Power Normal/Optimal; Max Frame Rate Off; Shader Cache Default/large; Texture Quality Quality; V-SYNC application-controlled; G-SYNC only when supported.
Competitive, no Reflex Low Latency On, then test Ultra; Power Prefer maximum performance per game; V-SYNC Off if tearing is acceptable; cap only if testing shows better consistency.
Reflex game Enable Reflex in-game; Control Panel Low Latency Off; Power default unless clock behavior warrants testing; cap only for VRR, consistency, or thermals.
G-SYNC/VRR Enable G-SYNC; use the highest refresh rate; cap slightly below the ceiling; begin with Control Panel V-SYNC On; test full-screen and borderless separately.
Laptop or battery Optimal Power; sensible FPS cap; Battery Boost/WhisperMode where supported; verify the game uses the GeForce GPU.
Stutter troubleshooting Keep Shader Cache enabled; allow post-driver-update recompilation; test overlays and background apps; compare frametimes; clear the cache only when corruption is suspected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should Low Latency Mode be On or Ultra?

Use Off globally. For a game without NVIDIA Reflex, test On first and then Ultra if the game is GPU-bound and frametimes remain stable. DX12, Vulkan, CPU-bound, and Reflex-supported games may respond differently.

Should V-SYNC be enabled with G-SYNC?

For a tear-free starting configuration, enable V-SYNC in the NVIDIA Control Panel, cap FPS slightly below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate, and test the game’s own V-SYNC behavior. Competitive players who accept tearing may prefer V-SYNC Off.

Does Prefer maximum performance increase FPS?

Not automatically. It may help when a game incorrectly reduces GPU clocks or when testing shows a latency benefit, but it can increase temperature, fan noise, and power use.

What should I do about stutter after a driver update?

Give the game time to rebuild its shader cache, because driver installation can delete cached shaders. If stutter persists, investigate overlays, asset streaming, CPU or storage bottlenecks, and the game update before clearing the cache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I change Global Settings or Program Settings?

Keep Global Settings conservative and use Program Settings for individual games. This prevents one game’s latency, power, synchronization, or texture preference from affecting unrelated applications.

The Bottom Line

Start with a conservative global profile, make exceptions per game, and use NVIDIA Reflex whenever the title supports it. Configure G-SYNC with the correct refresh rate, a cap slightly below the VRR ceiling, and a tested V-SYNC strategy. Measure FPS, 1% lows, frametimes, latency, temperatures, and power before keeping any change.
