Then work through the eight fixes below, starting with the lowest-risk options: reset the game settings, test another graphics API, verify Steam files, check drivers and Windows, repair dependencies, remove software conflicts, and finally perform a clean reinstall.
This guide reflects the current PC compatibility information available as of August 18, 2026. Menu labels and launch behavior can change after game updates, so use the official SCP: Secret Laboratory crash guide if a label differs in your Steam installation.

The solution depends on what happens on screen:
- Desktop crash: the game closes or Windows reports that the application stopped working.
- Freeze: the window becomes unresponsive but the process remains open.
- Black screen: the game is still running, but no usable image appears.
- Loading crash: the game closes at a repeatable loading point.
- Server disconnect: you return to the menu or are removed from a server, while the game itself stays open.
- Performance problem: extreme stuttering, overheating, or very low FPS feels like a crash but requires performance troubleshooting.
- Security block: antivirus or firewall software prevents launch or connection without the game technically crashing.
Note where the failure occurs—before the menu, at the menu, during loading, or when joining a server—and whether it happens on every server. Remove custom launch options temporarily before testing the fixes.
Quick compatibility checks
Since Update 14.0, the client requires a 64-bit edition of Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer, or Windows 11. Older Windows versions may launch but are unsupported and can be unstable. Linux and macOS compatibility layers such as Proton and Wine are also unsupported according to the developer’s Update 14.0 support notice.

Check your Windows version by opening Start, searching for winver, and confirming the version and build. Windows Insider builds are discouraged by the official troubleshooting guidance.
The listed minimum PC requirements currently include:
- Intel i5-6600-equivalent processor
- 4 GB RAM
- Dedicated graphics comparable to an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB VRAM
- DirectX 11-capable graphics hardware
- 8 GB of free storage
- Broadband internet connection
- A microphone for voice chat
Intel integrated graphics are specifically unsupported. Meeting minimum requirements is not a guarantee of stability if the driver is damaged, the drive is failing, Windows is corrupted, RAM is unstable, or the system is overclocked.
Fix 1: Reset all SCP: Secret Laboratory settings
Try this first if: the crash began after changing resolution, graphics quality, display mode, audio, keybinds, or accessibility settings, or if the game cannot reach the main menu.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click SCP: Secret Laboratory and select Properties.
- Open the General tab.
- Set the launch behavior to Ask when starting game, if that option is available.
- Start the game.
- Select Play SCP: Secret Laboratory and RESET ALL SETTINGS.
This removes problematic graphics and display configuration, but it may also reset custom audio, controls, and accessibility preferences. Reapply those settings gradually rather than restoring everything at once.
If the reset prompt does not appear, remove all custom Steam launch options, restart Steam, and try again. If the game still will not start, continue to the graphics API test.

Try this if: the game crashes before the menu, after a graphics change, or immediately after an update.
In Steam, open Library, right-click SCP: Secret Laboratory, choose Properties, stay on General, and find Launch Options. Enter only one of these options at a time:
-force-d3d11
-force-d3d12
-force-vulkanTest them in this order:
- Enter
-force-d3d11and launch the game. - If it fails, remove that option and test
-force-d3d12. - If both DirectX options fail, test
-force-vulkanonly when your GPU and driver support Vulkan.
The official guidance recommends trying different APIs; it does not identify Vulkan as a universal cause of crashes. A community report associated some startup problems after version 14.1.1 with Vulkan, but that evidence is anecdotal and other players reported that the proposed workaround did not help. Treat each API as a compatibility test, not a guaranteed fix.

Remove the launch option after testing unless one API is clearly stable. Never place several graphics flags in the field simultaneously. If the game works with one option, record that result for support.
Fix 3: Verify the Steam game files
Try this if: the crash occurs during loading, after an interrupted update, or after files were modified by a third-party tool.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click SCP: Secret Laboratory.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, restart Steam, and test the game.
Verification can replace corrupted or incomplete installation files, but it does not guarantee a fix. It may not remove every user configuration file, registry entry, or third-party modification. If Steam reports no problem but the crash continues, reset the settings or follow the official clean-reinstall procedure.
Fix 4: Update or clean-reinstall the GPU driver
Try this if: other games are crashing, Device Manager reports a graphics-device error, the game fails after a driver change, or the crash happens during rendering.
- Identify whether your GPU is from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Download the driver from the manufacturer’s official support site.
- Install it using the manufacturer’s clean-install option where available.
- Restart Windows.
- Test SCP:SL with overlays and custom GPU profiles disabled.
The official crash documentation treats graphics drivers as one category among several, not as the answer to every crash. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, the new driver may contain a game-specific regression. In that case, test the previous stable driver supplied by the manufacturer rather than assuming the newest release is best.

A full driver cleanup is most appropriate after switching GPU brands, repeated installation failures, or crashes in several games. Use the manufacturer’s documented procedure and avoid unofficial driver-updater utilities.
Fix 5: Check Windows and repair system files
Try this if: Windows is outdated or unstable, multiple applications crash, system files report errors, or you are running an unsupported Insider build.
First run winver from the Start menu and confirm that you are on 64-bit Windows 10 21H1 or newer, or Windows 11. Install normal Windows updates, but do not treat an unsupported operating system as equivalent to a supported one.
For suspected Windows corruption, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannowAllow both commands to finish. DISM may take several minutes, and sfc /scannow should not be interrupted. Restart Windows afterward and test the game again. These are general Windows repair commands, not SCP:SL-specific fixes; they will not resolve a server-only disconnect or a game-side bug.
Fix 6: Repair Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET
Try this if: the game fails before the main menu, displays a missing-DLL message, or crashes immediately after launch.
The official troubleshooting guide points players toward the supporting components used by the game:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET Framework 4.8
Use the official Microsoft installers or the dependency guides linked from the official SCP:SL crash-resolution page. If an installer offers Repair, use it; otherwise install the required component, restart Windows, and launch the game again.

Do not download individual DLL files from random websites. Avoid registry cleaners, “one-click” repair tools, game boosters, and unofficial redistributable bundles. They can replace files with untrusted versions or create additional problems.
Fix 7: Remove conflicts from overlays, overclocks, and security software
Try this if: the game crashes intermittently, only when loading into 3D gameplay, or after installing monitoring, recording, RGB, reshade, or overlay software.
Run one controlled test with the following closed or disabled temporarily:
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay
- AMD overlay
- MSI Afterburner and similar monitoring tools
- RGB, hardware-monitoring, and recording utilities
- Third-party ReShade or DLL injection tools
- CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocks
Return overclocked hardware to its default profile. This is especially important if other games also crash. A community discussion has suggested overclocking as a possible factor, but that is a user report rather than an official diagnosis.
Run a full antivirus scan. If a legitimate installation is being blocked, add a narrowly scoped exclusion for the verified game executable or installation folder rather than permanently disabling antivirus or firewall protection. Restore normal security settings if the exclusion does not help. The official crash guide also links Windows startup-app troubleshooting for isolating background conflicts.

Fix 8: Perform a clean reinstall or move the game
Try this if: verification, settings resets, and driver or dependency repairs have failed; the installation has survived several updates; or the game is installed on a nearly full, failing, or problematic drive.
- Uninstall SCP:SL through Steam.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the old installation directory contains leftover files.
- Follow the official clean-reinstall instructions instead of deleting arbitrary folders.
- Reinstall to a drive with sufficient free space.
- Launch with default settings before adding overlays, launch options, or custom configurations.
A reinstall may not remove every user configuration or registry entry. The official wiki provides separate guidance for resetting the game registry; use that documented procedure rather than guessing which registry keys or folders to delete.
If the drive shows errors, unusual slowdowns, or other applications are failing, diagnose the drive before repeatedly reinstalling the game. Reinstallation cannot fix unsupported hardware, corrupted Windows, unstable overclocks, or a server-specific problem.

Crash before the main menu
- Reset all settings.
- Remove custom launch options and test
-force-d3d11. - Update or clean-install the GPU driver.
- Repair DirectX, Visual C++, and .NET.
- Check the Windows version and avoid unsupported Insider builds.
Crash while loading
- Verify Steam files.
- Reset settings.
- Test another graphics API.
- Disable overlays and injection tools.
- Check free space and drive health.
- Perform a clean reinstall if necessary.
Crash when joining a server
First determine whether the process actually closes. If the game remains open and returns you to the menu, investigate server, network, anti-cheat, or firewall causes rather than applying graphics fixes indefinitely.
- Try an official or different server.
- Test a server without unusual plugins.
- Use a wired connection if available.
- Disable a VPN temporarily unless it is being used to test a known routing problem.
- Check antivirus and firewall rules.
- Determine whether every server fails or only one.
Port forwarding is generally relevant to hosting or specific network configurations, not to most players joining public servers, and it is not a normal fix for a desktop crash.
Black screen or freeze
Wait briefly to distinguish a slow load from a permanent freeze, then check Task Manager to see whether the process is still running. Reset settings, test -force-d3d11, disable overlays, and check the GPU driver. If Windows reports that the application is not responding but does not close, this is not exactly the same failure as a crash.

Note the update, remove launch options, reset settings, verify files, and test another graphics API. Do not assume that the newest driver or Vulkan is automatically responsible. Compare results across APIs and record the working configuration.
When all eight fixes fail
Stop repeating the same reinstall and prepare a useful support report. Include:
- Exact failure point: startup, menu, loading, or server join
- Windows version and build from
winver - CPU, GPU, RAM, and graphics-driver version
- Whether every server or only one server is affected
- Which graphics APIs you tested and the result of each
- Error messages, crash dialogs, or Windows event details
- A screenshot or short recording if the failure is visual
- The relevant game log or crash report, when available
Use the official Northwood Studios support portal or the official SCP: Secret Laboratory Discord technical-support channel. Steam’s support page also identifies the developer’s official support routes. Ordinary Steam forum threads are not Northwood’s primary technical-support channel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does verifying SCP: Secret Laboratory files delete saves?
Steam’s file verification replaces missing or corrupted installation files. It is not the same as resetting settings or deleting user data, but custom files or modifications may be affected. Back up important custom configurations before making major changes.
Should I use -force-d3d11 or -force-vulkan?
Test one option at a time. Start with -force-d3d11, then try -force-d3d12, and use -force-vulkan as another compatibility test if supported. Community reports about Vulkan are anecdotal; there is no basis for calling it the universal cause.
Can SCP: Secret Laboratory run on integrated graphics?
The official requirements specifically list Intel integrated graphics as unsupported. A laptop may work only when it has a supported dedicated GPU, but switching to that GPU cannot make unsupported hardware meet the game’s requirements.
Is Windows 11 required?
No. The supported requirement is 64-bit Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer, or Windows 11. Older Windows versions and Linux or macOS compatibility layers are unsupported.
Why does reinstalling not fix the crash?
Reinstalling does not correct unsupported hardware, bad drivers, Windows corruption, unstable overclocks, overlays, blocked executables, or a server-specific disconnect. It may also leave user configuration or registry data behind, which is why the official reset procedures matter.

Is a server disconnect the same as a game crash?
No. If the game stays open and returns you to the menu, investigate the server, network, anti-cheat, firewall, or plugins. A desktop crash is when the game process closes or Windows reports an application failure.
Is SCP: Secret Laboratory supported on Linux through Proton?
No. The developer identifies Linux and macOS compatibility layers such as Proton and Wine as unsupported. Problems in those environments should not be diagnosed as if they were occurring on a supported Windows installation.
The Bottom Line
Start with the official settings reset, then test graphics APIs and verify Steam files before moving to drivers, Windows, dependencies, software conflicts, and a clean reinstall. If the game stays open when you are disconnected, change course and investigate the server or network.
