How to Optimize Your Paper Configuration to Reduce Lag

A measurement-first guide to Paper configuration: identify the real lag source, choose the right file and setting, test gameplay trade-offs, and keep a reliable rollback path.

The safest way to reduce lag on a Paper server is to measure the bottleneck first, then change only the settings that address it. Start by separating tick lag from chunk-generation spikes, save stalls, and client rendering problems. After you identify the workload, tune the appropriate distance, entity, chunk, redstone, hopper, TNT, or explosion controls in the correct configuration layer.

Paper configurations are inherited. Use config/paper-global.yml for server-wide behavior, config/paper-world-defaults.yml for shared world defaults, an individual world’s paper-world.yml only for deliberate exceptions, and server.properties or spigot.yml for their respective settings. Do not copy an entire defaults file into every world: override only the exact value you need.

Understand what kind of lag you are seeing

“Lag” is not one problem. A server can have a low tick rate while clients still render smoothly, or players can see delayed movement because chunks are loading even though the main tick loop is healthy. Identify the symptom before touching configuration.

Tick lag

Tick lag occurs when the server cannot complete its work within the time available for a tick. Typical signs are delayed block updates, mobs moving in bursts, redstone responding late, and a falling TPS measurement. Timings or an equivalent performance profile should show which worlds, plugins, entity types, or systems consume the most tick time. Do not lower unrelated settings until that evidence points to them.

Chunk-generation and loading spikes

Exploration, teleportation, a world border reset, or a large number of players entering new terrain can produce short, severe pauses while chunks are generated or loaded. The relevant remedies involve view and simulation distances, chunk retention, and workload distribution—not necessarily entity activation.

Saving stalls and storage latency

Periodic saves can create pauses when disk work is concentrated in a few ticks or the storage device is slow. Check whether the stall coincides with autosaving and whether disk latency rises at the same time. Chunk-save controls should be changed only when this pattern is established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Client rendering or network limits

If the server’s tick health remains normal but players report low frame rates, delayed chunk visibility, or network saturation, server simulation settings may not be the cause. Lowering simulation distance will not fix a graphics bottleneck, and lowering entity activation ranges will not repair a congested connection.

Map each setting to the correct configuration layer

Paper reads several files with different scopes. Keeping that separation makes changes easier to audit and prevents one world’s optimization from unexpectedly changing every world.

File Scope Use it for
config/paper-global.yml Server-wide Controls that should apply consistently across all worlds.
config/paper-world-defaults.yml Default for worlds Shared world behavior and the baseline inherited by each world.
<world>/paper-world.yml One world An intentional exception, such as a special farm, minigame, or resource world.
server.properties Vanilla server properties View and simulation distance and other properties exposed by the server configuration.
spigot.yml Spigot-compatible settings Hopper timing, TNT throughput, and other Spigot-level limits.

Paper’s documented inheritance rule is simple: you do not need to copy the complete paper-world-defaults.yml into every paper-world.yml. Copy only the exact setting you intend to override. Every other value continues to come from the defaults file. This keeps files short and makes later Paper updates less error-prone.

A safe editing sequence

  1. Stop the server cleanly and back up the configuration files and all affected world directories.
  2. Record the Minecraft version, Paper build, and configuration version. Names, defaults, and available options can change between releases.
  3. Choose the narrowest scope. Use a per-world file when only one world has the problem; use shared defaults only when the workload exists across worlds.
  4. Change one related group at a time—for example, both distance settings together, or hopper limits together—and record the old and new values in a change log.
  5. Restart and observe the same workload that produced the lag. Compare tick health, chunk behavior, memory, disk latency, and player-visible mechanics.
  6. Keep the change only if it improves the measured problem without introducing unacceptable gameplay changes. Otherwise restore the previous value from the backup.

Adjust view distance and simulation distance deliberately

view-distance and simulation-distance solve different problems. View distance controls how far the server is configured to send world chunks to a player. Simulation distance controls how far game logic continues to run around players. They can be tuned independently, and the correct choice depends on whether transmission or ticking is consuming the budget.

Setting Primary workload Player-visible effect when lowered Use when
view-distance Chunk transmission and the amount of world kept visible. Players see a shorter horizon and receive fewer distant chunks. Chunk sending, memory pressure, or network work is the measured constraint.
simulation-distance Entity and block-system ticking around players. Distant farms, mobs, and other systems stop updating sooner. Tick time is dominated by active simulation rather than chunk transmission.

Both properties support Paper’s documented default/inheritance behavior. Keep that inheritance unless you have a reason to set an explicit value. Change one distance first if the diagnosis is clear; changing both at once makes it harder to identify which workload improved.

How to choose between them

  • Players report a short delay when entering unexplored terrain, and profiling shows chunk work: review view distance and chunk-loading behavior.
  • TPS falls near dense bases, farms, or villages while existing terrain is already loaded: review simulation distance and entity activation ranges.
  • Only one resource world causes spikes: apply the distance change in that world’s paper-world.yml instead of reducing the experience everywhere.

Use entity activation ranges as a targeted throttle

Paper exposes activation ranges for animals, monsters, raiders, miscellaneous entities, water mobs, villagers, and flying monsters. Entities outside a configured range tick less frequently, reducing work from creatures that are far from players.

Where activation ranges help

They are most useful when profiling shows that distant mobs or villagers consume a meaningful share of tick time. Apply the smallest category-specific change that addresses the measured source. A blanket reduction can make a busy world feel unresponsive while doing little for a bottleneck caused by redstone or chunk loading.

The gameplay trade-off

Reduced activation is not merely a visual setting. Distant entities perform less work, so farms, pathfinding, projectiles, and other behavior can progress differently outside the active range. Paper specifically warns that dropped items traveling through water streams may appear to lag, rubber-band, or move backward when throttled. Test item sorters, transport channels, villager halls, raid areas, and mob farms after changing these ranges.

Per-world exceptions

A survival world with large farms may need different activation choices from a lobby or a resource world. Put the exception in that world’s paper-world.yml; leave the shared defaults unchanged so new worlds retain a consistent baseline.

Control chunk retention, unloading, and saving

World configuration includes controls for how long chunks remain eligible for unloading, minimum unload counts, and the maximum number of chunks automatically saved per tick. These settings balance memory use, disk activity, and per-tick work.

Chunk unload delay

A longer unload delay can reduce repeated load/unload churn when players move back and forth across an area, but it keeps more chunks in memory. A shorter delay releases memory sooner while potentially causing more reload work. Change it only after confirming that chunk churn or memory pressure is involved.

Minimum unload counts

Minimum unload behavior affects how aggressively the server batches chunk cleanup. Raising or lowering it changes when cleanup work occurs and can move cost between individual ticks. Observe both memory and tick time; an apparently smaller unload batch is not automatically faster if it causes constant churn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

max-auto-save-chunks-per-tick

This limit controls how many chunks Paper saves automatically in a tick. A higher limit can finish a save cycle sooner but concentrates more disk work in individual ticks. A lower limit spreads the work out but may keep saving active for longer. Match the value to the observed pattern: storage latency and save stalls call for a different approach than a server whose main thread is saturated by entities.

Choose redstone and explosion behavior with mechanics in mind

The world configuration documents alternate redstone implementations and the optimize-explosions option. These are specialized CPU controls, not universal lag switches.

Alternate redstone implementations

Use an alternate implementation only when redstone processing is visible in profiling and the affected contraptions have been tested. Redstone timing and update order can be relied upon by players, map makers, or plugins. A setting that reduces CPU work may also alter behavior that a technical build depends on.

optimize-explosions

Explosion optimization can help a world with frequent TNT, creeper, or other explosion calculations. Test blast interactions, protection plugins, block drops, and redstone contraptions after enabling it. If the world does not experience explosion-heavy workloads, changing this option adds risk without addressing the bottleneck.

Limit hopper and TNT workloads in spigot.yml

Spigot-level controls are useful when item transport or explosive contraptions dominate tick time. The file documents hopper check and transfer timing as well as max-tnt-per-tick.

Hopper check and transfer timing

Hopper checks determine how often hoppers look for items, while transfer timing affects how often an available item is moved. Increasing the interval reduces checks and can lower CPU use in hopper-dense areas, but it slows collection and transport. Verify sorting systems, furnace arrays, item elevators, and overflow protection after every change.

max-tnt-per-tick

This cap limits how many TNT entities are processed in a tick. It is a safeguard for TNT-heavy workloads, not a substitute for diagnosing ordinary entity or chunk lag. Lower throughput changes cannon timing, duper behavior, minigames, and demolition projects. Set a measured limit, document it for players, and test the builds that depend on TNT before adopting it globally.

Evaluate anti-xray and other world processing separately

Paper’s world configuration includes anti-xray settings. Anti-xray addresses information exposure—such as hiding valuable blocks from clients—not general server performance. Depending on the mode and workload, it can add processing work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether to enable or tune it according to the server’s threat model and the measured overhead. If the objective is only to reduce TPS drops, first investigate the systems actually consuming tick time. Do not present anti-xray as a blanket optimization, and do not remove a security control solely because a generic preset claims it is faster.

Build a repeatable measurement loop

Reliable tuning is an experiment, not a one-time preset. Use the same process for every change so improvements are distinguishable from normal player-count or workload variation.

  1. Capture a baseline during the lag event: tick health, active player count, loaded chunks, memory behavior, disk latency, and the workload in progress.
  2. Use timings to identify the largest contributors. Note whether the profile points to entities, redstone, hoppers, TNT, chunk generation, chunk saves, or a plugin.
  3. Choose one setting group that directly affects that contributor. Avoid changing distances, activation ranges, hopper intervals, and save limits simultaneously.
  4. Reproduce the workload for a comparable observation period. For example, test the same farm running, the same route through unexplored terrain, or the same save window.
  5. Compare server metrics and player-visible behavior with the baseline. Record both the improvement and any changed mechanics.
  6. Keep, refine, or roll back the change. Then let the server run through ordinary peak and quiet periods before starting another group.

What to record in the change log

  • Date, Minecraft version, Paper build, and configuration version.
  • File and exact key changed, including whether it was global, a shared default, or a per-world override.
  • Old and new values and the workload that justified the change.
  • Tick behavior, chunk-loading behavior, memory, disk latency, and player reports after the change.
  • Any affected farm, plugin, redstone circuit, hopper system, or TNT build that was tested.

Common mistakes and recovery steps

Copying an entire defaults file into every world

This creates duplicated configuration, obscures which values are intentional, and makes updates harder to review. Delete unnecessary copies and retain only the specific keys that must differ from paper-world-defaults.yml.

Applying a popular “optimized” preset without a diagnosis

Presets assume a particular workload. A hopper-heavy server, an exploration server, and a redstone technical server need different controls. Restore the backup, profile the actual lag, and make a narrowly targeted change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing many values before restarting

When several groups change together, you cannot tell which one helped or caused a side effect. Revert to the baseline and reapply changes one group at a time.

Ignoring plugins and player contraptions

Configuration can expose assumptions in plugins and alter farms that were tuned for vanilla timing. Test the systems players rely on, and inspect plugin timings before blaming Paper’s global settings.

Failing to preserve a rollback

Keep dated copies of configuration and world backups before edits. If mechanics change or performance worsens, stop the server, restore the previous files, and verify the affected world before allowing normal play to resume.

A practical decision checklist

  • Tick time from distant entities: review simulation distance and the relevant activation category; test farms and water item streams.
  • Chunk transmission or memory pressure: review view distance and chunk retention; verify that exploration still feels acceptable.
  • Frequent load/unload churn: review unload delay and minimum unload behavior in the affected world.
  • Save-related pauses: review max-auto-save-chunks-per-tick alongside storage latency.
  • Redstone-heavy tick usage: evaluate the alternate redstone implementation and test timing-sensitive circuits.
  • Explosion-heavy usage: evaluate optimize-explosions and test protection and blast behavior.
  • Hopper-heavy usage: adjust hopper check or transfer timing in spigot.yml and test sorting throughput.
  • TNT-heavy usage: evaluate max-tnt-per-tick and test cannons, minigames, and demolition workflows.
  • Information-security requirement: evaluate anti-xray independently from performance tuning.

What a successful optimization looks like

A successful change has a documented bottleneck, a setting whose scope matches that bottleneck, and a measured result that survives normal player activity. The server should maintain healthier tick behavior without silently changing farms, redstone timing, hopper throughput, TNT limits, or the visibility and activity ranges players expect. Because Paper defaults and option names can change with Minecraft and Paper releases, recheck the generated configuration and your change log whenever you upgrade.
