To install mods on a Space Engineers dedicated server, install the Dedicated Server software, add each Workshop or Mod.io ID in the server manager’s Active Mods or Subscribed Mods control, save the server, and verify the world under World Settings > Mods. Steam PC servers normally use Steam Workshop IDs. Xbox and mixed PC/Xbox servers should use mods hosted on Mod.io.

The important detail is that mods belong to a world, not just to the server installation. A mod can appear in the server configuration yet be absent from the world you actually start, so verification in the world settings is part of the installation.

Space Engineers has two relevant mod-delivery services for dedicated servers:

The numeric part is the mod’s identifier. For a Steam Workshop item, it is the number in the Workshop URL. For Mod.io, it is the ID shown on the published mod page. Do not give an Xbox or mixed-platform server a Steam Workshop ID: the official administration guidance says Xbox players can use only mods hosted through Mod.io.

If your server is strictly Steam PC, Workshop is the normal workflow. Decide the audience before building the mod list, because changing services later means replacing the IDs in the server configuration and checking the world again.
Install the Space Engineers Dedicated Server
You can install the server from Steam or deploy it with SteamCMD. Both routes install the same dedicated-server application; choose the one that fits how you maintain the machine.
Install through Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library > Tools.
- Find Space Engineers Dedicated Server and select Install.
- When installation finishes, launch
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exefrom the installation.
This route is convenient when the server machine already has the Steam client and you want the installation visible in the Steam library.
Install with SteamCMD
For a headless or separately managed Windows installation, run SteamCMD with the dedicated-server app ID 298740. Replace the folder value with the directory where you want the server files:
+login anonymous +force_install_dir <folder> +app_update 298740 +quitAfter SteamCMD completes, start SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe from the installed files. Keep the installation directory accessible: the troubleshooting files and the DedicatedServer64 folder referenced later are inside or alongside this installation.
Create the server instance and select its world
The first launch opens the dedicated-server configuration flow. The labels can vary slightly by build, but the official quick setup follows this sequence:

- Run the dedicated-server executable.
- Choose the local or console server entry in the launcher.
- Continue to server configuration.
- Enter a server name and a world name, or select the existing instance and world you intend to host.
- Save the configuration.
- Start the server.
Do not add mods to one world and then start another. Because the mod list is stored with the world, the selected world is the object you must verify after adding IDs.
Add Workshop or Mod.io mods
Open the mod list
In the server manager, locate the control named Active Mods or Subscribed Mods. This is where dedicated-server mod IDs are entered. The installation folder’s general Mods directory is not the normal location for Workshop server mods; the modding documentation explicitly says that directory is not used for this workflow.
Enter each identifier
- Open Active Mods or Subscribed Mods.
- Add one identifier for each mod.
- Use the service-qualified form when the interface accepts it:
Steam:123456789for a Steam Workshop item ormod.io:123456789for a Mod.io item. - Save the server configuration.
- Start the server so it can obtain the requested content.
Some server-manager versions present separate fields or selectors rather than one service-qualified text field. In that case, select the appropriate service and enter the same numeric ID. The essential information is both the service and the number; copying only a title or a full web address is not a substitute for the ID.
Find a Steam Workshop ID
Open the Workshop page for the mod and copy the numeric value in its URL. For example, if the page address ends in a number such as 123456789, enter that number with the Steam service designation when required: Steam:123456789.

Open the mod’s published Mod.io page and use the ID displayed by that page. Enter it with the Mod.io designation when required: mod.io:123456789. This is the route required for Xbox-only and mixed PC/Xbox servers.
Verify that the mods are attached to the running world
Adding an ID to the server manager is not the final check. Open the settings for the specific world you selected and go to World Settings > Mods. Confirm that every intended mod is listed there before asking players to connect.

- Check the world name first, so you are inspecting the same world the server starts.
- Confirm the service and numeric ID for each entry.
- Look for missing or failed entries rather than assuming the server downloaded everything.
- Review the load order after adding or removing items.
Be careful when comparing the order shown in different places. The official Mods guidance notes that the dedicated-server GUI and save files display load order differently. A visual sequence in one view is therefore not proof that the sequence will look identical in the other.
What a successful setup looks like
A successful installation has the intended IDs in the server manager, the same mods visible under the selected world’s World Settings > Mods page, and no download failure recorded when the server starts. Players should use the same platform-compatible service as the server’s mod list.
Steam PC, Xbox, and mixed-platform compatibility
Steam PC server
A server intended only for Steam PC players can use Steam Workshop-hosted mods. Give the server the Steam IDs, and have players connect with the Steam PC version that can access those items.
Xbox server
For a server specifically for Xbox players, use Mod.io-hosted mods and enter Mod.io IDs. Steam Workshop items are not the supported source for Xbox clients.
Mixed PC and Xbox server
Use Mod.io for every mod on a mixed server. Even though PC players can participate, the Xbox clients determine which service is viable for the shared mod set. Replacing a Workshop item with a Mod.io publication may require finding the creator’s equivalent upload rather than reusing the Steam number.
Troubleshoot a mod that will not download
When a server starts without a requested mod, do not begin by copying files into the installation’s general Mods directory. Use the server’s log and cache information to identify the failure.

1. Read workshop_log.txt
Open workshop_log.txt in the dedicated-server logs directory and read the final failure reason. The last error is more useful than the fact that a mod is absent from the world, because it distinguishes a download problem from an incorrect ID, service mismatch, or local Steam components problem.
- If the log shows an invalid or missing item, recheck the numeric ID and service prefix.
- If the server is for Xbox or mixed play, verify that the entry is Mod.io rather than Steam.
- If the log indicates a Steam component or client failure, continue with the DLL recovery step below.
2. Refresh the Steam DLLs when Steam downloads fail
The official setup guidance recommends copying these files from the Steam client or SteamCMD folder into DedicatedServer64:
steamclient64.dlltier0_s64.dllvstdlib_s64.dll
After copying the files, start the dedicated server again and inspect workshop_log.txt for the new result. Use files from the Steam installation that operates the server; mixing arbitrary DLL versions from another application can create a different startup problem.

3. Reset a damaged Workshop manifest
If the Workshop cache manifest is corrupted, delete appworkshop_244850.acf. This forces the server to build the Workshop mod download state again. Stop the server before removing the manifest, then launch it and check the log while it reacquires the requested content.
4. Correct an installation-folder mistake
Do not treat the installation’s general Mods folder as the upload location for Workshop server mods. The dedicated-server modding instructions state that this folder is not used for this purpose. Remove the copied files only if you placed them there while troubleshooting; return to the server manager and its ID-based list instead.
5. Recheck the world and load order
After a download succeeds, open the selected world’s World Settings > Mods page again. If the mod is present but behavior is wrong, compare the order in the GUI and the save data with the documented caveat that those views can display the order differently.

A repeatable installation checklist
- Identify whether the server is Steam PC, Xbox, or mixed PC/Xbox.
- Choose Workshop for Steam-only PC play, or Mod.io for any Xbox participation.
- Install Space Engineers Dedicated Server from Steam Library > Tools, or install app
298740with SteamCMD. - Launch
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. - Create or select the server instance and the exact world you will start.
- Collect the numeric ID for every mod from its Workshop or Mod.io page.
- Add the IDs in Active Mods or Subscribed Mods, using the correct service designation.
- Save the configuration and start the server.
- Open the world’s World Settings > Mods page and confirm the complete list.
- If an item is missing, read
workshop_log.txtbefore changing files. - For a Steam download failure, refresh the three Steam DLLs in
DedicatedServer64; for a damaged cache manifest, deleteappworkshop_244850.acfand retry. - Tell players which platform and mod service the server requires.
When a managed host may be simpler
Running the Windows dedicated server yourself gives you direct access to the executable, configuration, logs, Steam components, and cache manifest. That access is valuable when a Workshop download fails because you can inspect workshop_log.txt, replace the required DLLs, or reset appworkshop_244850.acf.
A managed host removes much of the operating-system installation work, but you still need to provide the correct world and mod IDs and choose a host that supports the platform you intend to serve. Before paying, confirm that the service exposes the Active Mods or Subscribed Mods setting, supports the required Steam or Mod.io source, and gives you access to logs when a download fails. The mod IDs and world verification steps remain the same either way.

Where do I put a Workshop mod ID?
Put the numeric Workshop ID in the server manager’s Active Mods or Subscribed Mods control, using the Steam-qualified form when supported. Then verify it under the selected world’s World Settings > Mods.
Can Xbox players use Steam Workshop mods?

Why does the server list a mod but the world not use it?
