How to Organize PS5 Games, Media, and Storage

By VGSources Team 13 min read

The most reliable way to organize a PS5 is to separate three jobs: use Settings > Storage to see what is consuming space, use the Game Library to move games between storage locations, and use Media Gallery to sort screenshots and video clips. A USB extended-storage drive is suitable for keeping PS5 games you are not playing, but those games must be copied back before launch. A compatible M.2 SSD is the expansion option when you want PS5 and PS4 games to remain playable from added storage.

Work through the console’s built-in tools first, then choose hardware according to whether you need extra capacity, faster access to installed games, or a separate place for captures.

Start with a storage audit

Before deleting or buying anything, check how the PS5 is using its internal space. Open Settings > Storage. The storage screen separates the console’s occupied space into categories such as games and apps, media, saved data, and other system data. The exact totals change as you install games, download updates, and create captures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check

  • Games and apps: Identify large installations and titles you no longer play regularly.
  • Media: Look for screenshots and video clips that have accumulated in Media Gallery.
  • Saved data: Treat save files separately from installed game data. Do not delete saves unless you are certain they are backed up or no longer needed.
  • Available space: Leave room for game updates, which can require substantial temporary space while installing.

The storage-management screens let you move or delete supported data. Deleted game and application purchases can be downloaded again from your Game Library, but deleting a game does not mean you should automatically delete its saves or captures.

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).

Use a simple three-question audit

  1. What must remain immediately playable? Put current PS5 games on console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD. Put current PS4 games on either of those locations or on USB extended storage.
  2. What should remain installed but can wait? Move an inactive PS5 title to USB extended storage, accepting that it must be copied back before play.
  3. What only needs preserving? Export valuable captures to USB, verify the copies, and then consider removing the console originals.

This separates a capacity problem from an organization problem. Buying a drive will not make an overgrown Media Gallery easier to browse, and deleting a game will not remove old video clips unless you manage those categories separately.

Choose the right storage location

PS5 storage options are not interchangeable. The important distinction is whether a location can merely hold a game or can also launch it.

Storage option Best use Important limitation or check
Console storage Games and other data you are actively using Monitor free space in Settings > Storage.
USB extended storage Keeping games outside the console when you are not playing them PS5 games must be copied to console or M.2 storage before they can launch. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
Compatible M.2 SSD Expanding capacity while keeping PS5 and PS4 games playable from the added storage The SSD must meet Sony’s current compatibility, performance, size, and installation requirements.
USB drive for captures Copying screenshots and clips out of Media Gallery The guidance establishes capture copying, not a particular drive model or performance rating.
Cloud storage Saved-data storage where supported by the relevant PlayStation service Cloud saved data is separate from game installations and captures.

Storage location versus backup

USB extended storage is still part of the PS5 game-management workflow; it is not automatically a second backup of every kind of data. A game moved there can be moved back, but captures copied to a USB drive are separate files that you should protect like any other personal archive. Cloud storage, where supported by the relevant PlayStation service, concerns saved data rather than the installed game or your Media Gallery files.

Move games with the Game Library

Use the Game Library when you want to keep a title without letting it consume the storage you need for current games.

Move an inactive game to USB extended storage

  1. Connect a compatible USB drive to the PS5. Plug it directly into the console rather than through a USB hub.
  2. Open Game Library and highlight the installed game you want to relocate.
  3. Open the game’s options menu and choose the move or copy command for USB extended storage. The wording can vary by system software and game state.
  4. Confirm the transfer and wait until the console reports completion before disconnecting the drive.

A PS5 game stored on USB extended storage is a parking copy. To play it, move or copy the game back to the console’s internal storage or to a compatible M.2 SSD. You do not need to redownload the game merely because you moved its installation.

Play PS4 games directly from USB

PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage, so this is a practical location for older titles that you still play occasionally. If a PS4 title has both PS4 and PS5 versions, confirm which version is installed before moving it; the PS5 version follows the PS5-storage rule and must be on console or M.2 storage to launch.

Move a game to M.2 storage

If a compatible M.2 SSD is installed, use the Game Library’s storage-management controls to move games there. PS5 and PS4 games on M.2 storage remain launchable, as do supported media applications. This makes M.2 storage the better fit for a frequently played library that no longer fits comfortably on the internal drive.

Plan transfers around your play schedule

Move backlog titles in batches when you know you will not need them immediately. Keep a small active set on console or M.2 storage, and avoid starting a move just before a planned play session. The copy-back requirement for PS5 games on USB means an archived title needs extra time before it is playable, while a PS4 title on USB can launch without that step.

USB extended-storage requirements and safe handling

Sony’s extended-storage guidance specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB through 8 TB. These are compatibility requirements stated by Sony, not a guarantee that every drive in that range will work; Sony notes that not all devices are guaranteed to be compatible.

Before formatting

  • Copy any personal files you need from the drive first. Formatting erases the drive’s existing data.
  • Use the PS5’s formatting option for extended storage rather than assuming a computer’s file-system format will be accepted.
  • Keep the drive connected directly to the console and avoid a USB hub.
  • Do not disconnect the drive while data is being moved or while the console is reading it.

Disconnect safely

Use the PS5’s stop or safely-remove command for extended storage before unplugging the cable. Removing the drive during a transfer can interrupt the installation and may require the console to repair or reformat the storage.

Do not mix up two USB jobs

A USB drive formatted as extended storage follows the PS5’s game-storage rules. A separate USB drive used to copy screenshots and clips is handled through Media Gallery. Decide which job a drive has before formatting it: the formatting step erases existing contents, so valuable personal files should be copied elsewhere first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide between USB and M.2 expansion

Choose USB extended storage when

  • You need inexpensive capacity for games that are not in your current rotation.
  • You mainly play PS4 games and want to launch them without moving them first.
  • You are willing to copy PS5 games back before playing them.
  • You want a removable archive that can be disconnected when the console is transported.

Choose a compatible M.2 SSD when

  • You want PS5 games to stay installed and playable on expanded storage.
  • You frequently switch between a large group of PS5 titles.
  • You also want PS4 games and supported media apps available from the added storage.

Check Sony’s current M.2 compatibility and installation instructions immediately before buying. Requirements can include interface, minimum sustained read performance, physical dimensions, heat-dissipation provisions, and firmware or installation details. A drive that physically fits is not automatically approved for PS5 use.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Decide whether you need launchable PS5 storage. If yes, prioritize a compatible M.2 SSD rather than USB extended storage.
  2. If USB is sufficient, confirm the drive is within Sony’s 250 GB through 8 TB range and rated SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later.
  3. Check the latest Sony compatibility list and installation instructions instead of relying only on a retailer’s label.
  4. Plan where existing files will go before formatting. A drive containing personal files should be backed up before the PS5 prepares it as extended storage.

There is no universal price or model recommendation in Sony’s guidance. Compare products only after confirming the current requirements and the job the drive must perform.

Organize screenshots and clips in Media Gallery

Sony describes Media Gallery as the place to view and manage screenshots and video clips. Open the Media Gallery app from the PS5’s game home or media area.

Find captures quickly

  1. Open Media Gallery and choose the capture view.
  2. Use the Sort control to change the order of items when you need the newest, oldest, or another available arrangement.
  3. Use Filter to narrow the view by capture type or other options presented by the console.
  4. Open the game-based albums to browse captures grouped by title instead of scrolling through one large timeline.
  5. Mark important screenshots or clips as Favorites so they are easier to retrieve later.

Use game albums for project-based organization: for example, keep a photo mode set, a walkthrough clip set, and a trophy-proof set associated with the game that produced them. Favorites are better for a short-list of items you expect to share or revisit soon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a capture policy

Give every capture one of three outcomes: keep as an active favorite, archive to USB, or delete after checking it is not needed. This prevents Favorites from becoming another unfiltered backlog. Review by game album first, then by capture type, so near-duplicate clips from one session can be evaluated together.

Copy captures to a USB drive

  1. Connect a USB drive that the PS5 can access.
  2. In Media Gallery, select the screenshots or video clips you want to export.
  3. Choose the option to copy the selected captures to the connected USB storage device.
  4. Wait for the copy operation to finish before removing the drive.

Copying creates a separate file outside the console. It is useful for archiving, editing on another device, or clearing old captures from the PS5 after you have verified the copies.

Keep an archive that is easy to audit

Copy captures in batches by game or project rather than emptying the entire gallery at once. After a batch finishes, open the copied files on another device when practical. Only then remove the corresponding console items. If a clip is irreplaceable, retain the USB copy even after deleting the console version.

A repeatable organization routine

  1. Audit: Open Settings > Storage and identify whether games, media, or saved data is the main source of pressure.
  2. Sort the game library: Keep current games on console or M.2 storage; move inactive PS5 games to USB and move older PS4 games to USB if that suits your play pattern.
  3. Clean Media Gallery: Filter by game, favorite the captures worth keeping, and copy important files to USB.
  4. Verify before deleting: Play or open a copied capture and confirm that any game you plan to remove is available in your Game Library for redownload.
  5. Recheck after updates: Large patches and new installations can change the balance, so repeat the Storage audit periodically.

Run the routine at useful checkpoints

Do an audit when the console warns about low space, after finishing a large game, and before installing a title that needs a substantial update. A short review at those points is safer than deleting randomly when an installation is blocked. It also gives you a chance to notice whether media, rather than games, is the category growing fastest.

Free space without losing the wrong data

Remove an installed game, keep its saves

When a game is finished, deleting its installed application is usually the largest immediate space-saving step. Review saved data separately before removing anything from that category. If you later want the game, download it again from the Game Library and continue with the appropriate save that remains available.

Archive captures before deleting them

Media Gallery organization does not replace a backup. Copy irreplaceable clips and screenshots to USB, verify the copies on another device when practical, and only then remove the console originals.

  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Do not confuse cloud saves with game storage

Cloud storage for saved data, where supported, does not hold the installed game itself and does not serve as a replacement for a game-storage drive. Treat cloud saves, game installations, and captures as three separate housekeeping tasks.

Delete by category, not by panic

Start with content that can be reacquired or has a verified copy: an installed game available in the Game Library, duplicate captures, or clips already exported to USB. Be more cautious with saved data and one-of-a-kind captures. The Storage screen is an inventory; it does not decide which memories or progress you value.

Troubleshooting common storage problems

The PS5 game is on USB but will not start

This is expected behavior for PS5 games on USB extended storage. Move or copy the game to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, then launch it from there.

The drive is not recognized

  • Confirm the drive meets the 250 GB to 8 TB capacity range and SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-faster requirement.
  • Connect it directly to the PS5 instead of through a hub.
  • Check the cable and try another supported USB port.
  • If the PS5 asks to format the drive, stop and back up any files you need first; formatting erases existing contents.
  • Check Sony’s current compatibility guidance because meeting the headline specifications does not guarantee every drive will work.

A transfer appears stuck

Do not unplug the drive immediately. Allow the console time to finish, then use the storage screen to check whether the game appears at the destination. If the operation fails, restart the console and retry with the drive connected directly. Repeated failures may indicate a cable, drive, or compatibility problem.

Media Gallery is difficult to navigate

Use filters before scrolling, switch to the game album view when you remember the title but not the capture date, and favorite only the items you expect to retrieve often. Export large collections to USB so the on-console gallery remains focused on active projects.

A game seems to have disappeared after moving it

Check each storage location in the Game Library and then inspect Settings > Storage. A move changes where the installation resides; it does not remove the purchase from your library. If the game was deleted rather than moved, it can be downloaded again from the Game Library, subject to the account and service that provided it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical decisions at a glance

Your situation Recommended action Why
Internal storage is nearly full and you rarely play several installed titles Move inactive PS5 games to USB extended storage. You retain the installations without using internal space, accepting the copy-back step when you want to play.
You rotate through many PS5 games every week Install a Sony-compatible M.2 SSD. PS5 games remain playable from expanded storage.
Your library is mostly PS4 games Use USB extended storage for those games. PS4 games can launch directly from the USB drive.
Media Gallery is dominated by old clips Filter by game, favorite keepers, copy archives to USB, then delete verified duplicates. This reduces clutter without sacrificing the files you want to preserve.
You are preparing to format a drive Back up its contents first and remove it safely afterward. Formatting erases existing data, and unsafe removal can interrupt transfers.

Maintenance checklist

  • Check Settings > Storage when free space starts to run low.
  • Keep active PS5 games on console or M.2 storage.
  • Use USB extended storage as an archive for PS5 games and as playable storage for PS4 games.
  • Review Media Gallery by game and capture type instead of deleting from a single undifferentiated list.
  • Copy valuable captures to USB before removing them from the console.
  • Back up a USB drive before formatting it for extended storage.
  • Use the PS5’s safe-removal command before disconnecting any storage device.
  • Recheck Sony’s current compatibility requirements before purchasing an M.2 SSD or USB drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play a PS5 game directly from USB extended storage?

No. USB extended storage can hold the installation, but a PS5 game must be copied to the console’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before it can launch. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.

What is the minimum and maximum USB extended-storage capacity?

Sony specifies 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum, with a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later. Not every drive that meets those headline specifications is guaranteed to be compatible.

Is an M.2 SSD better than USB extended storage?

It depends on the job. Choose a compatible M.2 SSD when PS5 games need to remain playable from expanded storage. Choose USB extended storage when you mainly need an archive for inactive games or direct play for PS4 titles.

Will formatting a drive erase my files?

Yes. Formatting erases existing data. Copy personal files elsewhere before formatting a drive for PS5 extended storage, and use the console’s safe-removal command before disconnecting it.

How do I organize screenshots and video clips?

Use Media Gallery’s sort and filter controls, browse albums organized by game, and mark frequently needed items as Favorites. Copy important captures to USB before deleting their console copies.

Does deleting a game delete my saves and captures?

Treat them as separate categories. Removing an installed game frees game-storage space, while saved data and Media Gallery captures require separate review and deletion decisions.

Can I redownload a game after deleting it?

Sony says deleted game and application purchases can be downloaded again from the Game Library. Verify the title is available in your library before deleting its installation, and review saved data separately.

Can I use a USB hub for extended storage?

Sony’s guidance says to connect the extended-storage drive directly to the PS5 rather than using a USB hub.

The Bottom Line

Start with Settings > Storage, then organize by function: console or M.2 storage for games you want playable now, USB extended storage for inactive games, and Media Gallery plus USB copies for captures. Remember the decisive rule: PS5 games stored on USB must be copied back before launch, while PS4 games can run from USB. Back up files before formatting, remove drives safely, and verify Sony’s current compatibility requirements before buying expansion hardware.
