PS5 UI Troubleshooting: Fix Missing Games, Slow Menus, and Display Issues

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A missing game, sluggish Home screen, or blank TV image usually has a specific, recoverable cause. Work from the least disruptive checks: verify the purchasing account and licenses, restart and update the console, then use the appropriate Safe Mode option. Do not reset the PS5 until you have backed up your data and exhausted the non-erasing steps.

Start with the symptom, not a factory reset

PS5 interface problems fall into three useful groups:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Content problems: a purchased game or add-on is absent, or a padlock icon appears.
  • Performance problems: the Home screen, menus, or a game icon behave slowly or erratically.
  • Display problems: the TV shows no picture, the image is incorrect, or Safe Mode itself is not visible.

The correct remedy depends on the group. Restoring licenses addresses ownership and padlock checks; clearing the system software cache or rebuilding the database addresses certain system-feature symptoms; display settings and cable isolation address a blank picture. Menu wording can change with system software and by support region, so install any available update and follow the labels currently shown on your console.

Can’t find a purchased game or add-on?

A missing item does not by itself prove that it was deleted or that the PS5 has failed. Check ownership, visibility, sharing and licensing in that order. These checks preserve installed data.

1. Confirm the account that owns the purchase

  1. Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account and verify the signed-in account.
  2. Open Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History (the exact grouping can vary) and look for the game or add-on. Confirm that the transaction completed rather than remaining pending or being made on another account.
  3. Open Game Library and search the full collection, not only the installed-games row. Check whether you are looking for the PS5 version, a PS4 version, a trial, or an add-on that belongs inside a specific game.

Purchases are tied to the account that made them. Signing out and into a different account can make a legitimate purchase appear to be missing even though the console and its storage are fine.

2. Check hidden items and filters

In Game Library, open Your Collection, then use Sort and Filter and the hidden-items view if it is offered. Clear filters for platform, installed status, genre or storage location. A hidden title remains owned; it simply does not appear in the ordinary collection view. Restore its visibility using the on-screen options, then search again.

3. Check Console Sharing and Offline Play

If another account bought the game, that account must have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on this PS5 for other users on the console to access the purchase. On the owning account, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. If the feature is enabled on a different PS5, access on this console may be unavailable until the ownership account changes its active sharing console. Only the account owner should change this setting, and repeated switching can be limited by PlayStation account controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Restore licenses

Restoring licenses is PlayStation’s first-line check for a padlocked game and can also help when a game or add-on cannot be located. On PS5, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select Restore, and wait for the operation to finish. PlayStation says this process does not affect your data. It rechecks the console’s local license information against the purchases on the account; it does not create a purchase or transfer ownership between accounts.

Afterward, return to Game Library and test the title while signed into the owning account. If the padlock remains, note the exact error text and whether the problem affects one game, every purchase, or only an add-on.

5. Check service status before escalating

Account, store and license services can be temporarily unavailable. Check the current PlayStation Service Status page and try again after an incident is resolved. If service is operating normally and the transaction is present, contact PlayStation Support with the account used, the affected content, any error code and the precise checks you already completed. That information prevents support from repeating the same basic steps.

Slow menus, performance drops, or a deleted icon that remains

Do not treat every slow animation as a failing drive. Start with a restart and current system software, then use Safe Mode only when the ordinary restart does not resolve the symptom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Restart completely and update

  1. Press the PS button, open the power menu and choose Restart PS5. If the interface is unresponsive, hold the console’s power button until it shuts down, wait for the power indicator to go out, and start it again.
  2. Install any available system software update from Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Do not interrupt an update or remove power while it is writing.
  3. If the slowdown occurs while signing in, loading a store page or downloading an update, check the network connection under Settings > Network > Connection Status. A network delay can look like a frozen menu even when local storage is healthy.

For a problem limited to one game, update that game and verify its installation before changing system data. For a Home-screen icon that remains after deletion, continue to Safe Mode’s database option below.

2. Enter Safe Mode correctly

Safe Mode starts the PS5 with a small set of recovery tools. To enter it:

  1. Turn the console completely off. Do not use Rest Mode.
  2. Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
  3. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button. A wireless connection alone will not select Safe Mode.

Read the warning and the description beside each option before selecting it. If Safe Mode does not appear on the display, treat that as a display or connection issue and follow the blank-screen procedure rather than choosing options blindly.

3. Clear System Software Cache

In Safe Mode, choose Clear System Software Cache when the symptom is a system-feature issue or a performance drop. The operation removes temporary system cache data while preserving installed games, saved data and user accounts. The console may restart and rebuild temporary files on the next boot, so the first start can take longer than usual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an official troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed speed upgrade. It cannot repair a failing display cable, correct account ownership, or promise that every slow menu will become faster.

4. Rebuild Database

Choose Rebuild Database when system features behave incorrectly or a game icon remains after the game was deleted. The PS5 scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. The scan can take time, particularly with a large drive, and the Home screen may be rearranged afterward.

Rebuilding is different from clearing the cache: cache clearing removes temporary software data, while database rebuilding catalogs content and repairs the system’s index. Neither action is a substitute for a backup, and neither is a guaranteed fix for all interface delays. Do not turn off the console while the process is running.

5. Consider Repair Console Storage only as shown

Safe Mode may offer Repair Console Storage. PlayStation characterizes this as a non-erasing option for storage-related problems. Read the current description on your screen and allow the operation to finish. If the console reports repeated storage errors, crashes, or an inability to complete the repair, stop experimenting and use the official repair route.

  • Uninterrupted speed and maximum visual performance
  • Transmits 4K resolution at 120 Hz and 8k resolution at 60 Hz as specified in HDMI 2.1
  • Supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth

6. Escalate persistent performance faults

If restarts, updates, cache clearing and database rebuilding do not resolve the symptom, collect the error code, when the slowdown occurs, whether it affects every user, and whether it began after an update or power interruption. Use PlayStation Repairs or PlayStation Support rather than opening the console or attempting unverified internal repairs. A repair center can evaluate hardware that software recovery tools cannot diagnose.

Blank screen or incorrect display output

A blank image is often a signal-path problem. Check the physical connection and input selection before assuming the PS5 itself has failed.

1. Verify the display path

  1. Confirm that the TV or monitor is powered on and set to the HDMI input used by the PS5.
  2. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends: unplug it from the console and display, inspect the connectors, and plug it back in firmly.
  3. If the PS5 runs through an AV receiver, HDMI switch or capture device, connect it directly to the display when practical. This isolates the intermediate device.
  4. Try another HDMI input on the display. If you suspect the current cable is faulty, test another compatible HDMI cable; PlayStation’s Safe Mode guidance specifically recommends trying a different HDMI cable when a picture is absent.
  5. Power-cycle the display and PS5, then select the correct input again.

Change one part of the path at a time so you know which change restored the image. A replacement cable is a diagnostic option, not proof that a particular cable specification or brand is required.

2. What to do when Safe Mode has no picture

If the Safe Mode screen does not appear, PlayStation advises checking the cable connection and trying a different USB, HDMI or power cable, testing after each change. Connect the controller directly to the PS5 by USB. If a direct display connection and a known-good cable still produce no Safe Mode image, the problem may involve the display, the console’s HDMI port or another hardware component; escalate rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Use Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode

When you can see Safe Mode, select Change Resolution for a blank or incompatible output. The PS5 restarts and uses a basic resolution that the display can accept. Once a picture returns, set a normal resolution in the regular video settings and test the display again.

Change HDCP Mode is another Safe Mode troubleshooting choice for compatibility problems between the console and a display path. Change one setting at a time, test the picture, and restore the normal configuration once the cause is identified. Do not generalize settings documented for other PlayStation models to the PS5; use only the options currently displayed in the PS5 Safe Mode menu.

4. Know when the issue is hardware

A persistent blank screen after direct connection, alternate input, cable testing and Safe Mode display changes warrants PlayStation Repairs. Record whether the console powers on, whether its indicator reaches the normal white state, whether audio is present, and which display paths were tested. Those details help distinguish a console fault from a TV, receiver or cable fault.

Action Typical purpose Effect on user and game data
Restart PS5 Clears a temporary hung state Does not intentionally delete installed content or saves
Restore Licenses Rechecks ownership for padlocked or missing purchases PlayStation says it does not affect data
Clear System Software Cache Addresses some system-feature issues or performance drops Removes temporary cache data; it is not a game or save wipe
Rebuild Database Reindexes system content and can remove a stale icon Designed as a non-reset database operation; follow the current on-screen warning
Repair Console Storage Checks storage-related problems PlayStation characterizes the Safe Mode option as non-erasing; follow the displayed instructions
Restore Default Settings Returns settings to defaults without a full console reset Does not delete user or game data, but you must configure settings again
Reset PS5 Last-resort software reset Deletes user and game data stored on the console

Restore Default Settings and Reset PS5 are not interchangeable. Restoring defaults leaves user and game data intact, although preferences and configuration must be set again. Resetting deletes data stored on the console and should be reserved for the end of troubleshooting.

Back up before any destructive reset

If PlayStation Support directs you to reset the PS5, back up first. Use Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5 with suitable USB storage, and verify that important saved data is synchronized or otherwise backed up before proceeding. Make sure you know the sign-in details for every account whose purchases you will need to redownload.

  1. Record the accounts on the console and the games or add-ons affected.
  2. Back up the console and allow the process to complete without removing the USB drive or power.
  3. Photograph or write down error codes and important settings, including display and network configuration.
  4. Only then select Reset PS5, and read the final confirmation explaining that console-stored user and game data will be deleted.
  5. After setup, sign in to the purchasing accounts, restore licenses if a padlock appears, and redownload content from Game Library.

A practical decision path

Symptom First checks Next official tool Escalate when
Purchased game missing Owning account, transaction history, hidden items, Console Sharing and Offline Play Restore Licenses Transaction is valid, services are operating, and content remains unavailable
Padlock icon Owning account and sharing status Restore Licenses Padlock persists with a completed purchase
Slow or erratic menus Restart, update, network conditions Clear System Software Cache; then Rebuild Database when appropriate Symptoms continue or storage errors appear
Icon remains after deletion Restart and update Rebuild Database Database operation fails or the icon returns with crashes
Blank screen Input, HDMI seating, direct connection, alternate cable Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode in Safe Mode No image after cable and direct-display tests

What to give PlayStation Support

Support can work faster when the report is specific. Include:

  • The PS5 model and current system software version.
  • The account that purchased the content and the transaction date or transaction-history entry.
  • The exact game, edition, add-on or error code.
  • For performance issues, when the slowdown began, whether it affects every game and whether it follows an update or unexpected shutdown.
  • For display issues, the TV or monitor input used, whether an intermediary receiver or switch was bypassed, the cables tested and whether Safe Mode was visible.
  • The exact sequence of recovery steps already attempted and their results.

Use PlayStation Repairs for persistent console faults. Avoid opening the PS5 or relying on undocumented internal repairs, because those steps can create additional damage and make diagnosis harder.

Quick Recap

Final checklist

  • Sign into the account that owns the game and confirm the transaction.
  • Clear Game Library filters and check hidden items.
  • Check Console Sharing and Offline Play when another account owns the purchase.
  • Restore licenses before considering any reset.
  • Restart, update and check network conditions for slow menus.
  • Enter Safe Mode with the second-beep procedure; use cache clearing or database rebuilding only for the matching symptom.
  • For no picture, verify the display input, reseat HDMI, bypass intermediate devices and test another cable.
  • Use Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode in Safe Mode for display compatibility problems.
  • Back up before any reset, and remember that Reset PS5 deletes console-stored user and game data.
