Organize The Sims 4 mods in the user-folder Mods directory, using a small set of categories such as Gameplay, CAS, and Build/Buy, then group files by creator or mod when that makes them easier to find. Keep script mods directly in Mods or one folder below it; package-only files can be nested up to five levels, according to the EA Forums guide.
Find the right Mods folder
The usual location is Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. If the folder is missing, EA says to create it; the EA Forums guide notes that starting and then exiting the game can also generate it. If you have relocated your Documents or Sims 4 user folder, use the relocated path instead.
Mods and custom content are supported in EA’s installation guidance for PC and Mac, not PlayStation or Xbox. Downloaded archives need to be extracted before you move their contents into Mods. Follow any creator-specific filename or installation instructions, and leave the supplied resource.cfg file in place for ordinary folder organization. EA’s installation guidance also explains how to enable content in the game.
Choose a structure you can maintain
There is no mandatory category system. Pick a structure that helps you locate files again, especially when a creator releases an update or you need to troubleshoot. A combined approach—content type first, then creator—is a useful starting point for package-only content:

Mods/CAS/CreatorName/for package-only hair, clothing, and other Create-a-Sim items.Mods/BuildBuy/CreatorName/for package-only objects.Mods/Gameplay/CreatorName/for package-only gameplay files, within the nesting limit.Mods/CreatorName/for a script mod and its associated files.
Organizing by content type makes browsing a category straightforward; organizing by creator makes it easier to identify that creator’s files when checking for updates. You can use either method or combine them. If a filename does not make the creator clear, the EA Forums guide suggests using creator names in folder organization.
Keep folder depth within the limits
The nesting rules differ by file type. The EA Forums guide says the Mods folder can contain up to five levels of subfolders, but script mods must be no more than one folder below Mods. A script mod includes a .ts4script file; do not bury it in a deeper category-and-creator hierarchy.

These limits are from the EA Forums guide and are not a guarantee for every future game version. When a mod includes multiple files, keep its files together and preserve any filenames or layout the creator requires. Do not merge custom-content files as a way to organize them; use folders instead.
Enable mods and check them after updates
- Extract downloaded
.zipor.rararchives, then move the relevant files into the appropriate location underMods. - In the game, open Game Options and enable Enable Custom Content and Mods. Relaunch the game for the change to take effect.
- After a game update, check the mod creator’s compatibility notes and replacement instructions before re-enabling an older version. EA says updates can make mods incompatible and that the game disables mods to limit potential problems.

Troubleshoot problems with organized batches
If the game develops a problem after mods are enabled, add files back in batches and track which folders or files are in each batch. If a batch triggers the problem, split it in half and test again, repeating until you isolate the incompatible or faulty mod. A clear folder structure—or a simple inventory of what each test batch contains—makes this process easier; it does not prevent mods from breaking after an update.
