Yes—you can raise a PS5 DualSense controller’s USB polling rate on Windows 11 with the third-party HIDUSBF utility. This is not a firmware or processor overclock: it changes how often Windows polls the controller over a wired USB connection. Start at 500 Hz, test carefully, and try 1,000 Hz only if the controller remains stable.

HIDUSBF may require disabling Windows 11 Memory Integrity, which reduces an important security protection. Treat this as an optional latency experiment, not a guaranteed upgrade.

What “overclocking” a DualSense actually changes

A controller’s polling, or report, rate is how frequently the host checks for new input data. The theoretical intervals are:

Polling rate Theoretical interval
250 Hz 4 ms
500 Hz 2 ms
1,000 Hz 1 ms

These figures describe the polling interval—not total input latency. Button and stick hardware, controller firmware, USB transport, Windows HID processing, remapping software, the game’s input sampling, rendering, and display latency all contribute to the final result. Moving from 250 Hz to 1,000 Hz therefore does not guarantee an exact 3 ms reduction in end-to-end input lag.

  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

HIDUSBF applies a Windows USB filter to selected devices. It does not flash the DualSense, increase its internal processor speed, or modify Sony’s firmware. Sony’s separate PlayStation Accessories utility is the appropriate tool for controller firmware updates.

USB is required for this procedure

Use a wired USB-C data connection. HIDUSBF is designed for USB devices; do not apply this procedure to a Bluetooth connection and assume the same result. Bluetooth timing depends on the adapter, drivers, firmware, Windows build, interference, and transport behavior.

Sony supports DualSense use on Windows 11 over USB and Bluetooth, but features vary by connection and game. For example, Sony notes that PC haptic feedback requires USB and game support. Independent measurements also show substantial variation between DualSense units, firmware versions, connection methods, and test setups; see Gamepadla’s DualSense data.

What you need

  • A Sony DualSense or DualSense Edge controller.
  • A fully updated Windows 11 64-bit PC.
  • A known-good USB-C data cable—not a charge-only cable.
  • A direct motherboard USB port where possible.
  • Administrator access.
  • The official HIDUSBF repository.
  • A polling-rate or latency tester for before-and-after measurements.

HIDUSBF is third-party software, not a Sony or Microsoft utility. Download it from the maintainer’s repository rather than from an unofficial repackaged site.

Important security warning: Memory Integrity

HIDUSBF’s documentation says its patching drivers may require Memory Integrity to be disabled on recent 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations. Microsoft warns that disabling Memory Integrity reduces protection against vulnerable drivers and takes a secured-core PC out of its secured-core state.

Prefer a non-patching driver variant if it works for your system. If disabling Memory Integrity is necessary, do so temporarily, test the controller, and turn it back on afterward if your configuration allows. Do not weaken security on a work-managed or security-sensitive PC merely to chase a small latency change.

Microsoft’s settings path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Device security.
  5. Open Core isolation details.
  6. Turn Memory integrity off.
  7. Restart Windows.

Before disabling it, check whether Windows Security identifies an updated compatible driver. Microsoft’s guidance is available in its article on drivers blocked by Memory Integrity.

Step 1: Update the DualSense firmware

  1. Connect the controller to the PC with USB.
  2. Install or open PlayStation Accessories.
  3. Check for a controller software update.
  4. Complete the update before changing USB filter settings.
  5. Do not disconnect the controller or shut down the PC during the update.

Firmware can affect measured polling and latency, so update first and record the firmware version if the tester provides it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Record the baseline

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter joy.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Confirm that the DualSense responds in Windows.
  4. Record its name and connection method.
  5. Run a polling-rate or latency test.
  6. Save a screenshot of the original result.

Use more than one test when possible. Record the reported polling rate, button latency, stick latency, jitter, Windows 11 build, firmware, USB port, and whether the controller is native or passing through another software layer. A high polling number alone is not proof of lower latency.

Step 3: Download and extract HIDUSBF

  1. Open the official HIDUSBF GitHub repository.
  2. Download the current archive provided by the project.
  3. Extract the complete ZIP file to a permanent folder.
  4. Do not run the setup program from inside the compressed archive.
  5. On a standard 64-bit Windows 11 installation, use the modern AMD64_AS path where applicable.

The repository distinguishes modern Windows driver directories and identifies HIDUSBF_AS.INF as the relevant setup-information file beginning with Windows 8.1.

Step 4: Install the HIDUSBF service

  1. Open the extracted HIDUSBF folder.
  2. Right-click SETUP.EXE and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Select Install Service.
  4. If the service installation appears to finish immediately, continue to the device list.
  5. If installation fails, right-click the appropriate INF file, normally HIDUSBF_AS.INF, select Install, and follow Windows’ prompts.

Do not install a random modified driver package if Windows blocks the selected variant. Recheck the driver architecture, extraction, administrator permissions, and Memory Integrity status first.

Step 5: Select only the DualSense

  1. In HIDUSBF Setup, display the connected HID devices.
  2. Identify the DualSense by its device name, hardware ID, or location.
  3. Temporarily disconnect other gamepads if several similar entries are listed.
  4. Select only the DualSense row.
  5. Check Filter On Device.
  6. Confirm that the filter status changes to Yes.

Do not select every HID device. Applying the filter to the wrong row could affect another input device. HIDUSBF applies the rate change only to selected devices, so accurate identification matters.

Step 6: Start at 500 Hz, then test 1,000 Hz

  1. Choose 500 Hz in HIDUSBF.
  2. Click Restart.
  3. Reconnect the controller or reboot Windows if necessary.
  4. Test buttons, sticks, vibration, audio, and game detection.
  5. If stable, return to HIDUSBF and try 1,000 Hz.
  6. Click Restart again and repeat the tests.

Watch for missed inputs, stutter, disconnects, duplicate inputs, unusual stick behavior, haptic or audio problems, and games failing to detect the controller. Do not make 2,000 Hz, 4,000 Hz, or 8,000 Hz the default recommendation. HIDUSBF includes higher-rate options for some devices, but a DualSense may not genuinely benefit from—or reliably produce—those rates. Some very high readings can reflect repeated or padded reports rather than new controller data.

Step 7: Verify the actual result

Run several tests after each change and compare them with your baseline. Ideally use:

  • A polling-rate tester.
  • A latency tester that reports button or stick latency separately from polling rate.

If the reported rate rises but button or stick latency does not improve, the result is not necessarily a failure. Polling rate and hardware-level latency are different measurements. Conversely, a high reported rate is not useful if it introduces instability.

Independent Gamepadla testing records DualSense results from roughly 250 Hz to 1,000 Hz over wired connections, with different latency outcomes. Treat those measurements as evidence that results vary—not as a universal specification for every controller.

DS4Windows and Steam Input

DS4Windows is not required to apply the HIDUSBF filter. It is a mapper and virtual-controller layer used for XInput emulation, remapping, profiles, and compatibility with games that do not properly support a native DualSense.

Test in this order:

  1. Test the controller natively.
  2. Test with Steam Input disabled for the game.
  3. Use DS4Windows only if the game needs it.
  4. Compare results only when the software path is the same.

Stacking Steam Input, DS4Windows, and another remapper can cause double input and make latency comparisons meaningless. If DS4Windows is required, its documentation recommends HidHide when games see both the physical and virtual controllers. Hide the physical device from games while leaving the virtual controller visible.

Troubleshooting

HIDUSBF will not install

  • Confirm that the archive was fully extracted.
  • Run setup with administrator privileges.
  • Use the modern AS driver files on current Windows versions.
  • Try the non-patching variant if available.
  • Check Windows Security for a blocked-driver notice.
  • Restart after changing Memory Integrity.

If the filter is not essential, remove it rather than leaving a security protection disabled permanently.

The controller disappears or stops responding

  1. Disconnect the controller.
  2. Reopen HIDUSBF Setup.
  3. Find the DualSense entry.
  4. Uncheck Filter On Device.
  5. Click Restart.
  6. Reconnect the controller.
  7. If necessary, remove the device in Device Manager and select Scan for hardware changes.

HIDUSBF’s recovery guidance warns that a device can stop working if it remains linked to a removed filter driver. Unlink the filter first, or delete and rediscover the device through Device Manager.

The tester still shows 250 Hz

Possible causes include a filter applied to the wrong device, Bluetooth being used instead of USB, a charge-only or unstable cable, an incomplete device restart, unsupported hardware, an incorrect driver variant, or a tester measuring a different layer.

Try a direct motherboard USB port, another known-good USB-C data cable, a full reboot, 500 Hz before 1,000 Hz, and a second tester. HIDUSBF may require reconnecting, rebooting, or restarting the device through Device Manager before the change appears.

The polling number rises but latency does not

That can be a genuine result. A higher report rate reduces the possible waiting interval for a USB report, but it cannot remove controller processing, game sampling, remapping, display, or rendering delay. Compare button and stick latency—not only the polling figure.

Double input appears after enabling DS4Windows

  1. Install or repair HidHide.
  2. Hide the physical DualSense from games.
  3. Leave the DS4Windows virtual controller visible.
  4. Disable Steam Input for the affected game.
  5. Do not run multiple remappers simultaneously.

Haptics or adaptive triggers stop working

Check whether the game supports the feature, whether the controller is connected by USB, and whether DS4Windows has converted it to an XInput device. Test again with the virtual layer disabled. Sony notes that PC haptics require USB and compatible game support.

How to undo the change

  1. Connect the DualSense by USB.
  2. Open HIDUSBF Setup as administrator.
  3. Select the correct DualSense entry.
  4. Uncheck Filter On Device.
  5. Click Restart.
  6. Reconnect the controller or reboot Windows.
  7. Confirm normal operation in joy.cpl.
  8. Re-enable Memory integrity in Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details if you disabled it.

Only remove the HIDUSBF service after unlinking the device from the filter. Removing software while a device is still linked can leave the controller unavailable.

Is 1,000 Hz worth it?

It may be worth testing if you play latency-sensitive games over USB, already have a stable low-latency setup, and are comfortable installing a third-party driver and managing the security trade-off. The possible benefit is a lower worst-case wait for a USB report and, in some setups, a measurable improvement.

Leave the controller stock if you use Bluetooth exclusively, need maximum plug-and-play reliability, use a secured-core or work-managed PC, cannot accept disabling Memory Integrity, or cannot measure a meaningful improvement. A higher polling number is not automatically better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before reaching for HIDUSBF, prioritize a reliable USB data cable, current controller firmware, a direct USB port, minimal remapping layers, and fixing double input or Bluetooth interference. Then test 500 Hz and 1,000 Hz only if the experiment is worthwhile for your setup.
