How to Paint Fyreslayers: Skin, Beards and Magma Effects

Paint warm Fyreslayer skin with controlled shading, build vivid orange beards in two layers, and use selective highlights or a light-centered magma effect for extra impact.

For a quick, warm Fyreslayer finish, shade the skin with undiluted Reikland Fleshshade and give the beard two fully dried coats of Fuegan Orange. Add Flayed One Flesh and Pallid Wych Flesh highlights for more definition, or glaze the orange hair with a 1:1 mix of Lamenters Yellow and Bloodletter for stronger saturation. For magma, make the hottest point the lightest and let the surrounding colors darken toward the cooler edges; the official example is a cross-faction color study, not a Fyreslayers-specific recipe.

Choose a finish before you start

The official faction-specific starting point is Tyler Mengel’s “From the Mind of Mengel: Fyreslayers, the easy way,” published by Warhammer Community on 12 March 2018. It is a shade-led approach: establish the base colors, use washes to define skin and hair, then stop at a clean tabletop finish or add selective highlights and a glaze. The named paints and exact sequence below report that 2018 tutorial; they are not a claim about later paint-range changes.

Use the quick version when you want a consistent finish across a unit. The extra definition is useful when a face, bare arms, or a character will be especially visible. Neither option requires every raised surface to be highlighted: concentrate extra work where it improves the sculpt’s readability.

More defined Flayed One Flesh on raised areas, then Pallid Wych Flesh on the most prominent points; selectively deepen shadows with Reikland Fleshshade if needed Glaze with a 1:1 mix of Lamenters Yellow and Bloodletter for more saturation A character, elite model, or a more polished finish

Mengel described his one demonstrated miniature as taking “about an hour,” including time waiting for washes to dry. That is his personal report about that model, not a general painting-time estimate. Drying time, model detail, and the amount of highlighting you choose will all affect your own pace.

Think of the two finishes as a choice about where to spend attention. The shade-led version already has a defined sequence for the two most prominent materials: shade the flesh, then build the hair color in two layers. The detailed version adds selective steps rather than replacing that foundation. This makes it practical to paint a unit consistently and reserve extra contrast for a champion, a face that will be prominent in the finished model, or a weapon effect that deserves to draw the eye.

Prepare the miniature and establish the base colors

Mengel’s example begins with a Corax White spray undercoat, applied in multiple thin coats until coverage is solid. The reason this sequence is useful is practical: much of a Fyreslayer’s visible surface is skin and hair, so clean coverage on those areas gives the washes and orange layers a consistent foundation. Work toward solid coverage without obscuring sculpted detail.

  1. Prime in thin passes. Follow the product’s directions and let the undercoat dry before painting. In the tutorial, Corax White spray is the chosen starting color; it is an example, not a required faction standard.
  2. Block in the other colors. Mengel uses Sotek Green on cloth, Doombull Brown on straps, Retributor Armor on most gold metal, and Leadbelcher on silver areas. These are his example choices, so change them if they suit your scheme better.
  3. Keep the flesh and hair clean. Avoid getting metallic paint on the skin or hair. Pick out the flesh runes deliberately rather than letting nearby metallic areas blur their edges.
  4. Let base colors settle before shading. Work in a way that keeps distinct materials separate. Stray paint on skin or hair is harder to disguise once a wash or bright orange layer has been applied.

Fyreslayer ur-gold runes are described in Warhammer Community’s 23 June 2021 faction article, “With Axe and Flame, the Fyreslayers Explode Into the New Edition,” as sigils hammered into the warriors’ flesh. That lore makes the runes intentional visual details, not incidental marks: preserve their legibility as you paint the surrounding skin and metallic accents.

The tutorial’s other colors are examples of how Mengel separated materials, not a required palette. Sotek Green provides a contrasting cloth color in his miniature; Doombull Brown marks the straps; and the gold and silver paints distinguish the metal areas. If you choose different cloth or metal colors, the useful part of the sequence remains the same: establish the surrounding materials cleanly, keep metallic paint off the skin and hair, and make a deliberate pass on the flesh runes so they remain readable.

The white spray undercoat is also an example rather than a rule. Mengel used it as the starting point for the bright skin and orange hair in his tutorial. If using that specific sequence, the important practical requirement is solid coverage from multiple thin passes while retaining the sculpt’s detail. The guide does not prescribe a different primer, a particular brush brand, or a fixed amount of paint, so there is no need to treat those as prerequisites for following the recipe.

Paint warm skin without tide marks

Apply the shade in controlled sections

The tutorial’s skin step is undiluted Reikland Fleshshade. Rather than coating the whole model in one uncontrolled pass, work one natural area at a time: for example, separate the legs, torso, and head. Complete each area in a continuous pass so the wash has less opportunity to dry in an obvious boundary across an otherwise uninterrupted patch of skin.

  1. Load the brush with enough shade to cover the area, but not so much that it floods the miniature.
  2. Move the shade across one continuous skin area, guiding it around the sculpted forms.
  3. Check recesses and low points while the shade is still workable. If a pool is building up where you do not want one, draw excess away with a clean brush rather than leaving a large puddle to dry.
  4. Finish that natural section, then move to the next. Let the wash dry before handling the area or adding highlights.

The balance matters: the shade needs to settle into recesses to define the face and musculature, but excess liquid can dry into unwanted pools. The source specifically cautions against overloading the skin. If a mark forms at the boundary of a pass, the first defense is to divide the work at sculpted or natural color breaks, not halfway across a broad visible area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That section-by-section method is especially useful on a model with large uninterrupted patches of flesh. A leg, torso, and head can each be treated as separate working areas, so a natural edge becomes the stopping point. It is less helpful to pause halfway across a broad visible section: the first part may begin drying before the next part joins it, leaving a boundary. Plan where each pass will end, then complete that area smoothly.

There are two different problems to watch for as the shade settles. A visible tide mark is associated with the point where a wet pass meets a drying edge; dividing the model at natural boundaries helps reduce that risk. A pool is excess shade collecting in a low point; avoid flooding the area and lift away a large unwanted puddle with a clean brush while it is still workable. Neither calls for adding another full layer automatically. Let the first application dry, assess what the sculpt needs, and proceed to the optional highlight stage only when the surface is ready.

Add definition only where it helps

For the optional highlight pass, Mengel uses Flayed One Flesh on muscle edges and other raised areas, then Pallid Wych Flesh on the most prominent points. Treat these as progressively selective steps: the first color picks out raised forms, while the lighter color is reserved for the brightest accents. A broad repaint of every surface would reduce the contrast that makes the highlights useful.

The tutorial allows the first highlights to be “a little bit chunky” at this stage and suggests using Reikland Fleshshade selectively to deepen shadows further. In practice, that means the finish need not depend on hair-thin lines everywhere: prioritize visible edges and raised anatomy, then use a small amount of shade where a shadow needs more separation. Keep the additional shade local rather than repeating a full skin wash over finished highlights.

Use the lighter color to describe the forms that catch the eye, not to cover all the skin equally. Muscle edges and raised areas are the main targets for Flayed One Flesh; reserve Pallid Wych Flesh for the most prominent points. That order creates a simple hierarchy of light and keeps the brightest paint scarce. On a face or arms, a few carefully chosen accents can do more to clarify the sculpt than attempting to outline every ridge.

If the first highlight looks a little broad, the tutorial does not require removing it or restarting the skin. Mengel’s advice that the highlights can be somewhat chunky makes the approach forgiving at this stage. Follow with the lighter point highlights, then use Reikland Fleshshade selectively if a particular shadow needs to read more strongly. Because that shade is a targeted correction here, avoid washing across the whole finished area and dulling the highlights you have just established.

Build a vivid orange beard

Use two orange layers for the shade-led version

Apply Fuegan Orange over the hair in two layers, allowing the first to dry fully before applying the second. Mengel chose two because one coat did not give him the vibrancy he wanted. The second layer is therefore a deliberate color-building step, not a wet-on-wet shortcut. Applying it before the first has dried can disturb the underlayer and make coverage less even.

  1. Paint the orange over the beard and hair, following the direction and texture of the sculpt where possible.
  2. Let the first coat dry completely.
  3. Apply the second coat to increase the orange’s vibrancy, taking care around the face, skin, and other color boundaries.
  4. Allow the second coat to dry before deciding whether the shade-led finish is enough or you want the optional glaze.

This is the quick recipe’s complete orange treatment. It relies on the orange shade to supply recessed definition; it does not require a separate series of hair highlights. The two coats also make the result more vibrant than the single coat Mengel found insufficient for his own example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most important pause in this sequence is between coats. The first Fuegan Orange layer needs to dry fully before the second goes on. That wait helps the second layer build color over the first rather than disturbing it. The tutorial does not specify an exact drying time, so use the condition of the paint rather than a fixed number of minutes. Once dry, the second layer is the step that addresses the vibrancy Mengel wanted from his own example.

Keep the orange inside the beard and hair shapes, especially near the face. Because the skin and hair are both prominent, a clean boundary helps each color read clearly. The shade-led finish is intentionally simple: two orange layers give the hair its color and the recesses their definition. If that result suits the model, there is no need to add a separate hair-highlight sequence.

Increase saturation with a glaze

For a more saturated orange while retaining the existing shading and highlights, the tutorial proposes glazing the hair with a 1:1 mix of Lamenters Yellow and Bloodletter. A glaze is an optional color-adjustment pass, not a replacement for the two orange layers. Keep it on the hair and apply it as a controlled, light layer so the underlying sculpted texture and any existing definition remain visible. If you have already achieved the orange you want, stop rather than adding a glaze simply because it is listed as an option.

The two named colors are mixed in equal parts for this step. Its stated purpose is to increase saturation while retaining the shading and highlights already on the hair. It is therefore best considered after the two Fuegan Orange layers have dried and you can judge the result. The glaze is not required for the basic recipe and should not obscure the beard’s sculpted strands or recesses. A fine detail brush is a reasonable tool for keeping a selective glaze on the hair, but the tutorial names no required brush brand or model.

Make magma or flame read as hot

Use brightness to show temperature

The official magma example is not a Fyreslayers tutorial. Warhammer Community’s “Feel the Heat From These Scorching Magma Tyranids,” published on 22 April 2022, demonstrates a transferable visual principle: the hottest part is the lightest. Its painter builds from yellows and oranges through hints of red, then uses Rhinox Hide on the most raised sections. The article describes drybrushing and glazes and says the work began from Wraithbone.

For a Fyreslayer weapon, rune, or lava base, adapt the underlying logic to the sculpt: establish a light focal heat, transition through orange and hints of red, and let the surrounding material read darker and cooler. A bright center against darker edges helps communicate heat more clearly than making every part of the effect equally bright. Follow the sculpt’s grooves, cracks, or channels so the color transitions reinforce its shape.

The Tyranid article’s Rhinox Hide treatment belongs to that specific example, where the darkest color is placed on raised carapace sections. It should not be mistaken for a universal recipe for lava, or for a Fyreslayers formula tested on weapons or bases. The cited article also points readers to the Citadel Colour Masterclass Avatar of Khaine tutorial for expert instruction on fire and magma. If you use a different sculpt, let its shapes guide where you place the lightest color and how you transition to the surrounding surface.

For a small weapon channel, think first about where the hottest point should appear and what surrounding surface will frame it. The lightest color belongs at the focal heat, with yellow and orange transitions and hints of red helping it read as a bright, hot area. The contrast against darker surroundings is the visual cue. On a larger base, the same principle can be applied across more space, but the precise placement depends on the cracks and channels in that particular sculpt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume the Tyranid article supplies a complete list of colors and stages for a Fyreslayer’s lava. It describes a Wraithbone start and a combination of drybrushing and glazes, with yellow, orange, red hints, and Rhinox Hide on raised carapace areas. Those details show one cross-subject approach and its visual logic. The dark raised areas are part of that Tyranid example, not an instruction to put the darkest paint on every raised lava surface.

Keep the effect distinct from the rest of the model

On a small detail, such as a weapon channel or rune, the main challenge is keeping the bright area distinct from adjacent skin, metal, and paintwork. Work within the sculpted boundary, preserve the brightest value for the intended hot focal point, and avoid spreading the lightest color so widely that the whole surface reads as one flat bright patch. A lava base can use the same value logic on a larger scale, but the magma example remains inspiration rather than a fully specified, faction-specific step-by-step recipe.

Fyreslayers have several possible places for a hot effect to compete for attention: a flame or magma detail sits alongside bright orange hair, skin, and metallic surfaces. Keep the intended focal point easy to identify. For a weapon, that might be the sculpted channel or flame; for a rune, it is the rune itself; for a base, it is the magma area. The principle is not to make every nearby surface equally bright, but to give the hottest part a clear value contrast against its surroundings.

Break up an orange-heavy scheme

Orange hair is a strong visual choice, but it does not need to cover every Fyreslayer’s head. In a 3 March 2022 Warhammer Community showcase, “An Expert Painter Makes These Fyreslayers Blaze With Inner Warmth,” Amy Snuggs describes a Lofnir-inspired army with hair split between black and orange. The contrast breaks up an otherwise orange-heavy look. She also chose snowy, icy bases to contrast with the models’ warm skin and bright hair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are documented scheme ideas, not required colors or a procedural recipe. Use them when you want the army to retain the visual warmth of orange without making every model read identically. Snuggs also highlights the flamestrike poleaxe variants of Hearthguard Berzerkers as enjoyable flaming weapons to paint; that is inspiration for choosing a focal effect, not a claim that a particular paint sequence is established for those weapons.

A split black-and-orange hair scheme offers a clear way to vary models while retaining orange as part of the army’s identity. The specific showcase is Lofnir-inspired, so it is an example of one visual choice rather than a rule for the faction. Likewise, snowy and icy bases give a cool contrast to warm skin and bright hair; they are an option if the overall palette feels too warm, not a required basing theme.

The contrast can be considered across the whole miniature rather than only within one paint recipe. Warm orange hair and skin already occupy much of the model’s visual space. A black section of hair or a cool base can provide a different note, while the flamestrike poleaxe variants offer an opportunity to make a flame effect a deliberate focal feature. Snuggs’ account identifies these as scheme and subject choices, but it does not set out a step-by-step paint recipe for black hair, icy bases, or those weapons.

Choose how far to take the finish

The quick and detailed approaches solve different problems. The first gives you a repeatable skin-and-hair baseline with a limited number of stages. The second invests extra work in definition and color saturation. You can apply the detailed pass selectively rather than treating every model in a unit the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a unit: use the shade-led skin and two-layer orange hair sequence as a consistent baseline.
  • For a focal model: add the skin highlights where the sculpt catches the eye and glaze the hair only if it needs more saturation.
  • For a warm scheme that feels crowded: consider split black-and-orange hair or cool, snowy bases, following the visual choices in Snuggs’ showcase.
  • For magma or flame: work from the lightest hottest point toward darker surroundings, while treating the Tyranid example as transferable color inspiration rather than a Fyreslayers recipe.

The faction-specific skin and beard sequence comes from Mengel’s 2018 guide, while the split-hair and icy-base ideas come from Snuggs’ 2022 showcase. The 2021 faction article supplies lore context for the runes, and the 2022 magma feature supplies a cross-subject value principle. Those sources answer different painting questions; they should not be collapsed into a claim that one official tutorial gives a complete formula for every Fyreslayer material and effect.

For a straightforward army-wide plan, repeat the same base sequence on each model: establish the colors, shade the skin in natural sections, and apply two fully dried orange layers to the hair. Add the additional skin highlights or hair glaze when a model benefits from the extra definition or saturation. This separates the repeatable core from the optional work and makes it easier to keep the army cohesive without spending equal time on every miniature.

There is no universal time or cost figure attached to these steps. Mengel’s “about an hour” refers only to his demonstrated miniature and includes time waiting for washes to dry. The tutorial names specific paints, but no price, stock status, or current paint-range availability is established here. A fine detail brush can help with selective highlights and glazes, but no particular model or brand is specified. Treat these as painting choices, not as a shopping list with a fixed budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the quick paint recipe for Fyreslayer skin and beards?

The shade-led sequence in Tyler Mengel’s 2018 Warhammer Community tutorial uses undiluted Reikland Fleshshade on the skin and two Fuegan Orange layers on the hair. Let the first orange layer dry fully before applying the second.

How do I avoid tide marks or pools when shading the skin?

Work one natural area at a time, such as the legs, torso, or head, and complete each area in a continuous pass. Avoid overloading the skin with shade; if an unwanted pool is forming while the paint is workable, draw excess away with a clean brush.

How can I make the orange beard more defined or saturated?

For skin definition, use Flayed One Flesh on raised areas and muscle edges, then reserve Pallid Wych Flesh for the most prominent points. For a more saturated beard, Mengel’s tutorial suggests a 1:1 glaze of Lamenters Yellow and Bloodletter over the existing hair finish.

Is the Rhinox Hide magma method a Fyreslayers recipe?

No. The 22 April 2022 Warhammer Community feature uses Rhinox Hide on raised sections of magma Tyranid carapaces. Its transferable idea is that the hottest area is lightest, with yellows and oranges, hints of red, and darker surroundings; it is not a tested Fyreslayer weapon or base recipe.

How can I break up an army that uses a lot of orange?

Amy Snuggs’ Lofnir-inspired showcase uses hair split between black and orange and snowy, icy bases to contrast with warm skin and bright hair. These are optional scheme ideas, not required faction colors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does it take to paint a Fyreslayer this way?

Mengel reported that his demonstrated miniature took about an hour, including some time waiting for washes to dry. That is a personal time report for one model, not a general estimate; detail and optional finishing work affect the time.

The Bottom Line

For a dependable Fyreslayer baseline, use undiluted Reikland Fleshshade on the skin and two fully dried Fuegan Orange layers on the hair. Add selective Flayed One Flesh and Pallid Wych Flesh highlights or the 1:1 Lamenters Yellow/Bloodletter glaze only when you want more definition or saturation. For magma, keep the hottest point lightest and adapt the surrounding transitions to the sculpt; the official Tyranid example is inspiration, not a Fyreslayers-specific formula.
