On an original Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED Model, or Switch Lite, open HOME Menu → Controllers → Change Grip/Order, then hold your controller’s SYNC or pairing button for at least one second. Wait for the player indicator to settle. The exact steps depend on whether you are pairing Joy-Con, a Pro Controller, a third-party controller, or using Nintendo Switch 2.
First identify both your controller and console model. Switch 2 accessories and procedures are not automatically interchangeable with those for the original Switch family.

Before you begin
- Turn on the console; do not leave it only in sleep mode. Joy-Con cannot be paired while the Switch is asleep.
- Charge the controller, especially if its LEDs flash briefly or it will not stay connected.
- Identify your console: Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED Model, Switch Lite, or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Keep the console on HOME Menu → Controllers → Change Grip/Order during wireless pairing.
On standard Joy-Con, the SYNC button is on the inner rail side. On the standard Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, it is on the top edge near the USB-C port. Nintendo’s instruction is to hold SYNC for at least one second.
Pairing registers a controller with the console. It is different from waking a controller that is already registered. Nintendo’s controller-pairing FAQ explains the distinction and the meaning of the player indicators.
#1 Best Overall
- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
- Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
Pair Joy-Con wirelessly
- Turn on the Switch.
- Open Controllers from the HOME Menu.
- Select Change Grip/Order.
- On the Joy-Con, press and hold the small SYNC button for at least one second.
- Wait for the player LEDs to stop cycling and show the assigned controller number.
- Choose the grip shown on screen. For both Joy-Con used together, press the indicated L/R combination. For one Joy-Con held horizontally, press SL + SR on that Joy-Con.
The grip-confirmation step matters: pairing does not by itself tell the Switch whether the left and right Joy-Con should operate as one paired control set or as separate horizontal controllers. See Nintendo’s official Joy-Con pairing instructions.
Pair Joy-Con by attaching them
This method applies to the standard Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED Model, not Switch Lite.
- Turn on or wake the console.
- Align the left Joy-Con’s − button with the upper-left side of the console.
- Align the right Joy-Con’s + button with the upper-right side.
- Slide each Joy-Con down its rail until it clicks.
Attaching Joy-Con creates both a physical connection and a pairing connection. Switch Lite has built-in controls rather than detachable Joy-Con rails, so external Joy-Con or another compatible controller must be paired wirelessly.

As an edge-case method, attach the Joy-Con to a Joy-Con Charging Grip and connect the grip to the Switch dock with the appropriate USB cable. Nintendo identifies cable model HAC-010 for this process. Do not assume that every ordinary charging grip supports data-based pairing; verify the grip and cable.
Pair a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Wireless pairing
- Turn on the console.
- Open HOME Menu → Controllers → Change Grip/Order.
- Hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
- Wait for the player LED to identify the assigned controller number.
- If necessary, press a normal button such as A to wake the controller.
These are Nintendo’s official Pro Controller pairing steps.
USB pairing
On a standard Switch or Switch OLED Model, place the console in its dock and connect the Pro Controller to the dock with the included USB cable. The wired connection pairs it with the console.

- Capture Button
- C Button for GameChat**
Switch Lite has no dock USB port. USB pairing therefore requires a licensed compatible accessory, such as an appropriate USB playstand. Do not treat a Switch Lite like a docked standard Switch.
Pair a licensed third-party wireless controller
- Charge the controller.
- Open HOME Menu → Controllers → Change Grip/Order.
- Activate Switch pairing mode using the controller maker’s instructions.
- Wait for the controller to appear and for its player indicator to settle.
- Press a normal button if the controller has entered sleep mode.
Third-party controllers do not share one universal pairing method. Some have a dedicated pairing button; others require a Home, Sync, or platform-selection button. “Wireless” may mean Bluetooth, a proprietary USB receiver, or both. Confirm explicit Nintendo Switch compatibility before buying or troubleshooting.
Feature support can also differ. Check for motion controls, rumble or HD rumble, NFC/amiibo support, wake-from-sleep behavior, rechargeable power, wired fallback, and Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility.
How to tell whether pairing worked
- The controller responds on the Change Grip/Order screen.
- The player LED stops cycling and displays an assigned number.
- The controller navigates the HOME Menu.
- For Joy-Con, the Switch may ask you to confirm paired or horizontal orientation.
The displayed number identifies the controller’s current assignment; it does not necessarily mean that controller is “player one.” A game can impose its own player order, controller arrangement, or feature requirements.
Controller will not pair? Follow this recovery path
- Wake it: press a normal button such as A after opening Change Grip/Order.
- Retry the correct screen: return to HOME Menu → Controllers → Change Grip/Order.
- Hold SYNC again: keep the button pressed for at least one second.
- Charge it: for a Pro Controller with an active recharge indicator but nonfunctional player LEDs, Nintendo recommends charging for approximately 15–30 minutes before retrying. See Nintendo’s Pro Controller troubleshooting guidance.
- Pair one controller at a time: temporarily move other wireless devices away.
- Disconnect Bluetooth audio: with Bluetooth audio connected, Nintendo limits the Switch to no more than two wireless controllers.
- Restart the console: do this if the pairing screen appears stuck, then retry.
- Test the hardware: try the controller on another compatible Switch, if available, or test a known-good controller on the same console.
- Check compatibility: confirm the controller is officially licensed or explicitly compatible with your Switch generation.
- Update firmware: update the console and controller where Nintendo or the manufacturer provides that option. An update is not a guaranteed fix for a hardware fault.
If pairing works but buttons do not
Check whether the game requires a different controller arrangement, whether a Joy-Con is being held in the wrong orientation, or whether the controller is assigned to another player. Also check custom button mapping.
Recommended Free Tools
On Switch, button remapping supports Joy-Con L, Joy-Con R, and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping. Custom mappings are stored on the console and do not travel with the controller to another Switch. Nintendo documents the feature in its button-mapping support article.

- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
- Includes motion controls, HD rumble, built-in amiibo functionality, and more.

Disconnect one controller or erase all pairings
Temporarily disconnect one wireless controller
Hold that controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. To reconnect it later, press any button.
Erase every wireless-controller pairing
- Open System Settings.
- Select Controllers and Sensors.
- Select Disconnect Controllers.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation.
Warning: this removes pairing information for all wireless controllers, not only the troublesome one. You will need to pair the controllers again.
How many controllers can connect?
Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can generally be connected, although the practical limit depends on controller type, features, and software. Left and right Joy-Con count as separate wireless controllers. A Joy-Con pair used together therefore consumes two controller connections, not one.
Bluetooth audio creates a separate limitation: while Bluetooth audio is connected, no more than two wireless controllers can be connected at the same time. Disconnect the audio device if a third controller will not pair.
Nintendo Switch 2 differences
If you own Nintendo Switch 2, do not silently follow original-Switch accessory instructions.
- Original Joy-Con cannot be attached to Switch 2 in the same way as original Switch Joy-Con; Nintendo says they must be paired wirelessly.
- The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is intended for Switch 2 and should not be confused with the standard Switch Pro Controller.
- Original Switch and Switch 2 accessories are not automatically interchangeable.
Use Nintendo’s console-specific compatibility information and the relevant controller manual before pairing.

Which controller makes sense?
| Controller | Best suited to | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con | Handheld play, motion-control games, detachable two-player play | A left/right pair uses two wireless-controller connections; one horizontal Joy-Con has fewer controls. |
| Standard Switch Pro Controller | TV or tabletop play and longer sessions with full-size controls | It is not detachable Joy-Con and should not be confused with the Switch 2 Pro Controller. |
| Licensed third-party controller | Lower-cost extras, alternative ergonomics, accessibility features, or programmable controls | Pairing steps and features vary; some lack motion controls, NFC, rumble, or wake support. |
Nintendo lists motion controls, HD rumble, and built-in amiibo functionality for the standard Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. A Joy-Con Grip combines two Joy-Con into a larger layout but does not include Joy-Con and is not a charging grip; see Nintendo’s Joy-Con Grip product page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pair a controller while the Switch is asleep?
No. Wake the console and open HOME Menu → Controllers → Change Grip/Order before pairing. Joy-Con cannot be paired while the system is in sleep mode.
How do I pair a controller to Switch Lite?
Switch Lite’s built-in controls cannot be detached. Open Controllers → Change Grip/Order, then put a compatible external controller into pairing mode. USB pairing requires a licensed compatible accessory.
Why are my Joy-Con lights flashing?
The controller may be searching, insufficiently charged, or not completing registration. Charge it, reopen Change Grip/Order, hold SYNC for at least one second, and press the required L/R or SL + SR buttons.
Can I pair a PS5 or Xbox controller directly to Switch?
Do not assume so. Compatibility depends on the controller, firmware, adapter, and Switch generation. Use the manufacturer’s explicit compatibility instructions rather than generic Bluetooth pairing advice.
Best Value
- This controller also works with Nintendo Switch 2 - C Button not available
- Eight RGB zones with four pre-set modes for dynamic lighting combinations
- Two programmable quick-action back buttons for customizable gameplay
- Built-in motion controls for immersive gameplay
- Ergonomic design for extended comfort
How do I disconnect one controller?
Hold that controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. Press any button later to reconnect it.
How do I remove all controller pairings?
Go to System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Disconnect Controllers, then confirm. This erases pairing information for every wireless controller.
Why will only two controllers connect when Bluetooth headphones are connected?
Nintendo limits the Switch to no more than two wireless controllers while Bluetooth audio is connected. Disconnect the audio device to connect additional controllers.
Does a Joy-Con pair count as one controller or two?
For wireless connection limits, the left and right Joy-Con count separately, so a pair consumes two controller connections.
The Bottom Line
The reliable starting point is HOME Menu → Controllers → Change Grip/Order, followed by holding the controller’s SYNC or pairing button for at least one second. If it fails, charge and wake the controller, retry on that screen, disconnect Bluetooth audio, and verify console-generation compatibility before assuming the hardware is defective.
