Start with the combat you enjoy, then check whether the story, difficulty options, and co-op setup fit how you want to play. There is no universal “best RPG”: a game that suits a solo player who likes tactical planning may be a poor fit for a group looking for couch co-op. Before buying, verify the features for the exact platform and edition you plan to play.
1. Choose the combat pace you want
First decide whether you want time to consider each move or prefer immediate, real-time action. Turn-based tactical combat gives you room to weigh positioning, abilities, and how different actions interact. If you want reflex-driven action instead, check the specific game’s official description for how its combat works; the examples below are tactical, turn-based RPGs.
- Start with tactical turn-based games if planning encounters is part of the appeal. Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as a D&D RPG, while its Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition listing specifically describes deep tactical turn-based combat.
- Look for real-time combat descriptions if you want a faster, more immediate feel. Combat pace varies by game, so do not infer it from the broad “RPG” label alone.
2. Match the story to what you want from an RPG
“Story-rich” can mean different things: a prominent central narrative, companions with their own arcs, or choices that affect what happens. Look for those features in the game’s description rather than relying on a general reputation or a single “best story” ranking.
- For an expansive central story: Larian presents Baldur’s Gate 3 as having an expansive original story.
- For character origins and consequential choices: the Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition Steam listing describes origin characters with their own backgrounds and quests, and says choices have consequences.
3. Check what difficulty settings actually change
Do not assume an RPG has an easy setting—or that a mode called “Story” removes every challenge. Look for named difficulty options and read what the developer says they adjust.

Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 page says the game has three difficulty settings to customize combat challenge. In Community Update #20, Larian describes Story mode as making combat more forgiving so players can focus on the narrative. The cited Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition listing does not establish comparable details about difficulty settings, so check the current listing for the version you are considering.
4. Settle the co-op logistics before picking for a group
For multiplayer, establish three requirements before comparing games: local couch play or online play, how many people need to play, and which platform everyone will use. Then confirm all three on the relevant platform listing. A feature described for one platform or edition is not a guarantee for another.
