How to Plan a Safe Zoo Visit With Children

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe zoo day starts before you leave: check the zoo’s own visitor page, choose exhibits your child can handle, agree on supervision and meeting rules, and plan handwashing after every animal area. Once inside, keep children with a responsible adult, stay behind barriers, follow signs and staff instructions, and never feed animals or throw anything into habitats. Children younger than five should not touch reptiles, amphibians, or poultry at animal exhibits, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Start with the zoo’s current visitor information

Zoo policies are local and can change. Opening hours, timed-entry arrangements, closures, contact exhibits, food restrictions, stroller rules, accessibility services and bag policies are not universal. Check the facility’s official visitor page shortly before your trip and again if weather or other conditions could affect operations.

Verify these details before buying tickets

  • Hours and entry: Confirm opening and closing times, reservation or timed-entry requirements, parking instructions and late-arrival policies.
  • Closures: Look for temporary exhibit closures, construction notices, animal-care changes and visitor alerts.
  • Animal interactions: Check which contact exhibits are operating, their age limits, whether participation is optional and what clothing or behavior rules apply.
  • Food and bags: Find out whether outside food, drinks, coolers or large bags are permitted and where eating areas are located.
  • Strollers and mobility: Confirm stroller dimensions or rental availability, elevator access, paths, rest areas and any booking requirements for accessibility services.
  • Emergency information: Note the location of guest services, first-aid facilities and posted emergency instructions.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) specifically directs visitors to each facility’s own site for local information. Treat the zoo’s posted rules as the controlling instructions for that visit.

Use accreditation as one input, not a guarantee

If accreditation matters to your family, verify the zoo’s current status in AZA’s directory rather than relying on an old article or logo. The directory reported 240 accredited institutions as of March 2026; that number can change. AZA says, “One of the three core principles upon which AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums operate is safety.” Accreditation indicates that a facility has met the organization’s standards, but it cannot promise that an incident will never occur.

Compare facilities by practical evidence

There is no universal ranking that can tell you which zoo is safest for every child. Compare the facilities you are considering using current, verifiable information:

Question What to look for
Current accreditation Whether the institution appears in AZA’s current directory, checked close to the visit
Published visitor rules Clear guidance on barriers, food, contact exhibits, strollers, bags and emergencies
Age-appropriate activities Exhibits and programs whose rules match your child’s age and ability to follow directions
Accessibility information Detailed, current information about paths, entrances, restrooms, seating, rentals and accommodations

Match the day to your child’s age and abilities

A child’s ability to stay beside an adult, respond to a stop command and keep hands away from animals matters more than the number of exhibits you fit into one day. Choose a shorter route or skip a contact exhibit if your child is tired, frightened, impulsive or unable to follow its rules.

Children younger than five

CDC guidance says children younger than five should not touch reptiles, amphibians or poultry at animal exhibits. This is an age-specific public-health recommendation, not a suggestion to make an exception because an animal appears calm or clean. Young children should also be kept from putting fingers, pacifiers or other objects in their mouths around animals.

Children who can follow instructions

Explain the basic rules before arrival in words your child understands: stay with the adult, walk on visitor paths, stand behind every barrier, keep food away from animals and ask before touching anything. Practice a simple stop signal and make clear that a staff member’s instruction overrides a child’s wish to get closer.

Toddlers and children who wander

Keep a wandering child within immediate reach in crowded areas, near railings and at entrances or exits. A stroller can help during transitions if the zoo permits it, but do not treat a stroller as a substitute for active supervision around an exhibit.

Pack for an ordinary outing, not an expedition

Use the zoo’s bag and food rules to decide what to carry. A compact family first-aid kit is an optional preparation item supported by CDC outdoor guidance; it is not a zoo-specific safety requirement or a guarantee against injury.

Useful items to consider

  • Required tickets, identification and any accessibility documentation requested by the facility.
  • Water and snacks only if the zoo permits them in the areas where you plan to eat.
  • A small first-aid kit for routine minor needs.
  • Hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol for situations where soap and water are unavailable. It is a fallback, not a replacement for washing after animal areas.
  • Necessary child-care items, packed so they can be removed before entering an animal-contact area.

Do not assume that every item can enter every exhibit. CDC advises leaving objects such as strollers, cups and toys outside animal areas when the venue’s rules and the exhibit setup require it.

Make a simple arrival and separation plan

Identify help before exploring

On arrival, point out guest services, staff uniforms and the nearest clearly marked help point. Choose a recognizable meeting place in case adults and children become separated. Tell the child what the location looks like and which staff members they may approach.

Set the day’s expectations at the entrance

Use a short reminder rather than a long lecture: stay with the adult, use walking paths, stand behind barriers, do not feed animals and ask before touching. Repeat the reminder when you enter a new exhibit zone or when the child becomes tired.

Plan breaks and transitions

Build pauses into the route so a child is not making safety decisions while overtired. Check the map for restrooms, eating areas and quiet spaces. The facility’s current information should determine where these services are available; do not assume that another zoo’s layout or rules apply.

Keep children behind barriers and on visitor paths

Barriers are part of exhibit safety, not an invitation to lean over or reach through. AZA tells visitors to protect animals by not crossing barriers and not throwing items into habitats.

Rules to enforce at every exhibit

  • Keep the child on the designated visitor side of railings, walls, glass lines and gates.
  • Do not lift a child over a barrier or allow climbing on fences, rocks or exhibit structures.
  • Keep hands, fingers and objects away from an animal’s mouth, even when the animal is behind a mesh or a low wall.
  • Never throw food, coins, toys, stones or other objects into a habitat.
  • Follow staff directions immediately if an area is closed, a crowd must move or a keeper asks visitors to step back.

“The animal looks friendly” is not a safety assessment. A barrier protects visitors and animals from unpredictable movement, and it also prevents visitors from disturbing an animal’s care routine.

Handle contact exhibits as controlled activities

A touch exhibit is not the same as unrestricted contact. Each facility can set its own age limits, animal list, entry procedure and touching technique.

Follow the posted method exactly

Read the sign and listen to the staff briefing before a child approaches. CDC advises following written or verbal contact-exhibit rules. If staff say to use one finger, touch in a particular direction or wait for an animal to approach, help your child do exactly that. If your child cannot follow the instructions, leave the exhibit.

Keep personal items out when required

Leave pacifiers, cups, toys and strollers outside the animal area when the venue requires it or when CDC guidance calls for it. Secure loose belongings so a child does not drop an object into an enclosure or place it in their mouth after contact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not improvise contact

Only touch animals in areas explicitly designated for that purpose and only in the way staff permit. Do not reach through a fence, open a gate, handle an animal that is not part of the program or encourage a child to feed an animal unless the facility has specifically authorized that activity and provided instructions.

Reduce illness risk around animals

Animal areas can carry germs even when the animals and surroundings look clean. CDC states, “Even animals that look clean and healthy can carry harmful germs.” Its guidance is based on the possibility of contamination, not on whether a child remembers touching an animal.

Wash hands at the right times

  • Wash with soap and water after touching an animal.
  • Wash after leaving an animal area, even if the child did not touch an animal.
  • Wash before eating, drinking or handling a pacifier or food.
  • Use sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol only when soap and water are unavailable, then wash with soap and water when possible.

Help young children wash rather than assuming they did it adequately. Keep food and drinks away from animal areas and never share a child’s snack with an animal.

Do not let children put fingers, pacifiers, cups, toys or other objects in their mouths around animals. Keep those items outside the exhibit when instructed, and wash hands before returning them to the child.

Understand the scale of the concern

A CDC page published in 2024 reported about 100 illness outbreaks linked to animals in public settings during 2010–2015. That is a historical count across six years and multiple types of public animal settings, not an annual rate, a current estimate or a zoo-only figure. It supports careful hygiene without implying that every zoo visit will cause illness.

Supervise continuously, not just during touching

Assign a responsible adult to watch the child whenever the group is near an animal area. “Everyone is watching” can become “no one is watching” when several adults are talking or taking photos. Decide who has active supervision before entering a crowded exhibit.

Use a position that gives you control

Stand beside or slightly behind a young child so you can block a reach toward a barrier, mouth or dropped object. Keep a hand available in crowded places, but do not place yourself on the animal side of a barrier while trying to help.

Manage photos and phones

Take photographs only when another adult is actively supervising. A camera view can narrow attention and make it easier to miss a child moving toward a railing or putting an object in their mouth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Respond to fatigue early

End an exhibit or take a break when a child becomes restless, upset or less able to follow directions. Tiredness is a reason to reduce stimulation, not to relax the rules.

Know what to do if something goes wrong

If a child crosses a boundary or drops an object

Call the child back in a firm, calm voice and alert staff. Do not climb into an exhibit or reach into a habitat to retrieve a toy, cup or other item. Staff have procedures and equipment for dealing with objects or people near animals.

If a child is injured or feels unwell

Move only as directed by staff, notify the nearest employee or guest-services point and follow the facility’s emergency instructions. Do not leave the child alone while another adult searches for help unless staff direct you to do so.

If an animal escapes or an area is evacuated

Follow staff announcements, signs and evacuation directions immediately. Do not attempt to approach, film or help capture an animal. AZA accreditation requirements include facility planning and drills for events such as fire, relevant weather emergencies, visitor or staff injury and animal escape; those are preparedness measures for the zoo, not instructions for visitors to intervene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your group becomes separated

  1. Go to the agreed meeting place if it is safe to do so.
  2. Tell a uniformed staff member or guest-services employee the child’s name, clothing and last known location.
  3. Keep one adult at the meeting point while another follows staff directions.
  4. Do not send a child to search alone.

Handle accessibility, weather and medical questions locally

There is no single universal checklist for disability access, severe weather, heat, clothing, allergies or medical conditions. Review the zoo’s current accessibility and visitor information and contact the facility directly about accommodations or restrictions. For individualized medical advice, ask the child’s health professional. The zoo’s instructions and your clinician’s advice take priority over a generic packing list.

A practical sequence for the day

  1. Before leaving: Read the official visitor page, confirm hours and closures, review contact-exhibit rules, check stroller and food policies, and save guest-services information.
  2. Choose the plan: Select exhibits suited to the child’s age and ability to follow instructions. For children younger than five, exclude touching reptiles, amphibians and poultry.
  3. Pack: Bring permitted food and drinks, necessary child-care items, an optional compact first-aid kit and sanitizer for times when soap and water are unavailable.
  4. At entry: Identify staff, restrooms and a meeting place. State the four basic rules: stay with the adult, stay behind barriers, keep food away from animals and ask before touching.
  5. At each exhibit: Read the sign, assign one supervising adult, keep belongings outside when required and follow every staff instruction.
  6. After animal areas: Wash hands with soap and water before eating or drinking. Use sanitizer only as a temporary fallback.
  7. When conditions change: Take a break, leave an exhibit or follow an evacuation instruction without trying to manage the situation yourself.

A calm zoo visit is built on local information, close supervision, respectful distance and consistent hand hygiene. Those habits protect children, staff and animals without pretending that any public outing can be completely risk-free.
