Age of Mythology: Retold has no native macOS version, but you can play it on a Mac through GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, CrossOver, or remote streaming from a Windows PC. For most players, cloud gaming is the easiest route; CrossOver is the main local-installation experiment; and a Windows PC remains the safest choice for dependable multiplayer.
Does Age of Mythology: Retold work natively on Mac?
No. Microsoft currently lists Mac computers among the unsupported platforms. The official PC version requires 64-bit Windows 10 version 18362.0 or later, DirectX 12, 8GB of RAM minimum, and a compatible graphics processor. Microsoft lists 23GB of storage, while the Steam listing lists 25GB, so leave additional free space for updates.
That does not make the game inaccessible on Mac. Cloud services run it on remote Windows or Xbox hardware, CrossOver translates some Windows software for macOS, and Remote Play streams it from a Windows computer you own.
Check Microsoft’s current requirements and platform list before choosing a method.

The easiest method: GeForce NOW
GeForce NOW streams the Windows game from NVIDIA’s servers. Your Mac runs the client while the remote computer handles the game. NVIDIA supports Macs introduced in 2009 or later running macOS 10.15 or later. For 1080p at 60 frames per second, NVIDIA recommends 25Mbps and latency below 80ms to an NVIDIA data center.
Before paying for a membership, search the current GeForce NOW catalog and confirm that Age of Mythology: Retold is available in your country. Availability, queues, session limits, resolution, plan names, and playtime policies can change. A GeForce NOW subscription also does not necessarily include the game purchase.
How to launch Retold through GeForce NOW
- Buy or redeem Retold through a supported store account, normally Steam or Microsoft.
- Create or sign in to your GeForce NOW account.
- Install the official Mac app or use the supported browser option.
- Connect the Steam or Microsoft account containing the game.
- Search for Age of Mythology: Retold and choose Play.
- If prompted, sign in to Steam or Microsoft again and allow the remote service to synchronize or install the game.
Use a keyboard and mouse whenever possible. An RTS is generally more comfortable with mouse-driven camera movement, hotkeys, and unit selection than with a controller.
See NVIDIA’s current Mac and network requirements. NVIDIA’s current FAQ describes paid Performance and Ultimate tiers with 100 monthly hours and limited rollover, but verify the live policy and regional pricing before subscribing.

Xbox Cloud Gaming on Mac
Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you play a supported Xbox version through a browser. Apple devices and Safari are supported, but the game must be in the current cloud catalog and available in your region under an eligible Game Pass plan.

- Search the Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog for Retold.
- Confirm that cloud play is available in your country and under your Game Pass plan.
- Open the service in Safari, Chrome, or Edge and sign in with the correct Microsoft account.
- Select Age of Mythology: Retold and choose Play.
- Pair a compatible controller if the current cloud version requires one.
Xbox recommends at least 10Mbps, with 5GHz Wi-Fi preferred; higher bandwidth may be needed for better image quality. Do not assume that keyboard and mouse will work identically to the Windows PC version in every cloud configuration. Test the current setup before committing to it for competitive play.
Cloud availability, Game Pass eligibility, supported input, and pricing can change. Check the live Xbox page rather than relying on an old plan or price.
How to run it locally with CrossOver
CrossOver is not a virtual machine and does not provide Windows. It translates Windows application calls so some programs can run on macOS. Recent community reports indicate that Retold can run on some Apple Silicon Macs with recent CrossOver builds, but this is anecdotal and not official Microsoft or CodeWeavers certification.
Meeting the game’s Windows requirements does not prove that it will work through CrossOver. Chip generation, unified memory, macOS, CrossOver version, graphics translation, updates, and multiplayer components can all affect the result.
CrossOver installation path
- Install the current CrossOver release from CodeWeavers.
- Create a new bottle and choose a Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit environment if offered.
- Install Steam through CrossOver’s catalog or by selecting the official Steam installer.
- Sign in to Steam and install Age of Mythology: Retold in that bottle.
- Launch the game from CrossOver.
- Test single-player before trying multiplayer, mods, or the Scenario Editor.
If the game fails, update CrossOver first and try a clean bottle instead of repeatedly changing a damaged one. Avoid treating undocumented registry edits, DLL overrides, or environment variables as universal fixes; they are version-specific and can make recovery harder.

Common CrossOver problems and recovery
- Steam opens but the game does not: update CrossOver, then reinstall Steam and the game in a fresh bottle.
- Black screen, flicker, or missing textures: try low graphics settings and windowed mode, then test a current stable CrossOver build.
- Poor performance: close other applications, check unified-memory pressure, and lower resolution and graphics settings.
- Single-player works but multiplayer fails: treat the installation as unsuitable for reliable multiplayer and use cloud gaming or Windows instead.
- An update breaks the game: record the macOS, CrossOver, and game versions; back up saves; then test a clean bottle.
- Installer blocked by macOS: review macOS privacy and security prompts and only approve software obtained from the official vendor.
- Mods or Scenario Editor fail: do not assume PC features behave the same through CrossOver or cloud gaming.
A sensible recovery order is: reboot the Mac, update CrossOver, confirm macOS compatibility, back up saves, create a clean bottle, reinstall Steam and the game, disable overlays, test low settings, and test single-player. If multiplayer still fails, switch methods.
Stream it from a Windows PC with Steam Remote Play
If you already have a Windows gaming PC, Remote Play is often the strongest Mac-based option for multiplayer. Windows runs the game natively; the Mac mainly receives the video and sends keyboard and mouse input.

- Install Retold on the Windows PC.
- Sign in to the same Steam account on the Windows PC and Mac.
- Leave Steam running on the Windows PC.
- Install Steam on the Mac and open your Library.
- Select Age of Mythology: Retold and choose Stream or Remote Play when shown.
- Pair the Mac’s keyboard and mouse and launch the game.
Use Ethernet for the Windows PC and 5GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet for the Mac where possible. A nearby PC can provide better latency than a distant cloud server, but Remote Play does not eliminate latency. The Windows computer must remain powered on, connected, and capable of running the game.
Microsoft says cross-play is available across supported platforms, subject to platform and input settings. That does not guarantee that every CrossOver, cloud, or Remote Play configuration will behave identically. See Microsoft’s cross-network and input guidance.

Boot Camp
Boot Camp is relevant only to Intel Macs. Apple Silicon Macs do not use Boot Camp to install standard Intel Windows in the same way. Even on an Intel Mac, installing Windows does not guarantee acceptable performance: the machine must still meet the game’s graphics, memory, DirectX 12, and storage requirements.

Parallels and virtual machines
A virtual machine may run Windows-on-Arm on Apple Silicon, but Retold’s DirectX 12 requirement makes virtualized graphics support a critical limitation. Compatibility can change with macOS, Windows, Parallels, graphics drivers, and game updates. Without current, reproducible testing for your exact setup, treat this as experimental rather than a recommended route.
Troubleshooting any Mac method
- The game is missing from a cloud service: check the current catalog, country, store account, Game Pass plan, and licensing status. Do not buy another copy until you know which entitlement the service accepts.
- The wrong account is detected: sign out of the cloud client, Steam, or Microsoft account and sign back into the account that owns the game or subscription.
- Latency is high: use Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi, stop downloads and video streams, choose the nearest available server, and test at a lower stream quality.
- Input is not recognized: reconnect the controller or keyboard and mouse, check browser permissions, and verify whether the current cloud version supports your preferred input.
- The game crashes after an update: update the client, CrossOver, or macOS only when supported; for CrossOver, test a clean bottle.
- Storage is insufficient: allow more than the listed 23–25GB for downloads, updates, caches, and saves.
Final recommendation
Start with cloud gaming if you want the quickest path. Use GeForce NOW when you own the Steam version and it is currently supported in your region; use Xbox Cloud Gaming when your Game Pass plan and catalog include the game. Choose CrossOver when local installation matters and you accept version-sensitive troubleshooting. For serious multiplayer, mods, or the fewest compatibility surprises, use a Windows PC or console, with Remote Play as the Mac-facing option.
FAQ
Can I play Retold on an M1, M2, M3, or M4 Mac?
Yes, but not as a native macOS application. Cloud gaming and Remote Play should be evaluated first. CrossOver may work on some Apple Silicon Macs, but compatibility is unofficial and not guaranteed.
Do I need to buy the game twice?
Not necessarily. GeForce NOW generally uses a supported store entitlement, while Xbox Cloud Gaming depends on the applicable Game Pass plan or Microsoft entitlement. Check the service and your account before purchasing another copy.
Can I use mods and the Scenario Editor?
Microsoft confirms the Scenario Editor for PC, but do not assume that it will work identically through CrossOver or cloud gaming. PC installations offer the most reliable access to PC-specific features.
