But it may be the most convincing premium Windows handheld for players who want Xbox, Game Pass, Steam, Epic, GOG, Battle.net, emulation, and ordinary PC flexibility in one device.
Its appeal comes from the combination of a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of memory, an 80Wh battery, comfortable controller-style grips, two USB-C ports, and a controller-first Xbox fullscreen experience. The compromises are equally clear: a $999.99 US list price, a 7-inch IPS screen rather than OLED, high battery consumption in demanding games, and the occasional Windows problem that no fullscreen launcher can completely hide.
The real breakthrough is the combination, not the Xbox branding
The ROG Xbox Ally X is best understood as a Windows gaming PC with an Xbox-designed front end. It runs Windows 11 Home, not Xbox console software. That distinction matters: the device can run PC games from multiple stores, but it does not install Xbox Series X|S games locally as though it were a small Series console.
The Xbox partnership addresses a longstanding Windows-handheld problem. Windows offers unmatched storefront and peripheral compatibility, but its desktop, update prompts, launchers, sign-in screens, and inconsistent controller support are awkward on a small touchscreen. The Xbox fullscreen experience provides a controller-first library and a handheld-oriented Game Bar overlay while leaving Windows available underneath.

Those are official specifications from ASUS, Microsoft, and the ASUS specification sheet. They establish the hardware, not a universal performance result. Actual frame rates depend on the game, power mode, drivers, resolution, upscaling, and whether the device is plugged in.
Performance: powerful enough for serious PC gaming
The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is designed for demanding PC games at handheld power limits. The important practical question is not whether the 1080p screen can display a 1080p image; it is whether each game should be rendered at that resolution.
For modern AAA games, 720p or 900p with upscaling can be a better target than native 1080p. A stable 30fps or 60fps experience is usually more valuable than chasing the panel’s 120Hz maximum. FreeSync VRR helps smooth variable frame rates, while AMD features such as Fluid Motion Frames may improve perceived fluidity in supported situations. Frame generation is not a guaranteed upgrade: it can add latency and visual artifacts, and its usefulness varies by game.

Performance modes matter substantially. Lower-power modes are more appropriate for older games, indies, emulation, and longer battery life. Higher-power modes are useful for demanding games, particularly when connected to the 65W charger, but they increase heat and drain the battery rapidly. Claims that the Z2 Extreme is universally faster than every competing handheld should be treated cautiously; matched settings and power limits are essential for a fair comparison. Tom’s Guide’s testing illustrates how results vary by title and configuration.
The 80Wh battery is a real advantage, not an all-day guarantee
The 80Wh battery is one of the Ally X’s clearest strengths. It is materially larger than the standard ROG Xbox Ally’s 60Wh battery and gives the X more room for demanding games, travel, and lower-power play.
It does not turn high-performance AAA gaming into an all-day activity. Tom’s Guide reported roughly three hours in its testing, but that number is a test result, not a promise for every game. Battery life changes with the power profile, screen brightness, refresh rate, Wi-Fi, volume, frame rate, and game engine. ASUS’s own battery claims use specified conditions including 75% brightness, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, 50% volume, and online gameplay; they should not be generalized beyond those conditions.
- Light games and older titles: lower-power modes can provide a substantially longer session.
- Modern AAA games: expect much shorter playtime at high power limits, especially at higher brightness and refresh rates.
- Streaming or remote play: can reduce local rendering demand, although network quality becomes critical.
- Desktop or video use: generally consumes less power than demanding 3D gaming.
A suitable USB-C power bank can extend travel time, but it must support appropriate USB-C Power Delivery output. A low-wattage phone charger may charge slowly or fail to sustain gaming performance. Maximum performance is also not something to assume on battery; power and thermal limits can change the experience.
Comfort is arguably the Ally X’s biggest improvement
The hardware feels more like a traditional controller than a thin Windows computer. ASUS and Microsoft emphasize contoured grips, full-size analog sticks, impulse triggers, HD haptics, and two assignable rear buttons. Tom’s Hardware and Tom’s Guide both identified the ergonomics as a major strength.
The trade-off is size and weight. At approximately 715g, it is substantially heavier than a Nintendo Switch and comparable to other powerful PC handhelds. The large grips improve leverage and make long sessions more comfortable for many players, but they also make the device less compact. Comfort remains personal, particularly for smaller hands, but the design’s purpose is clear: reduce the strain associated with flatter handhelds.
The rear buttons are useful for shortcuts, menu commands, or games that benefit from extra inputs. The Xbox button, View and Menu buttons, Command Center, Library button, and Armoury Crate SE provide access to the handheld’s control and configuration layers without requiring constant touchscreen use.
The screen is strong, but not class-leading
The 7-inch 1920×1080 IPS panel offers a 120Hz refresh rate, AMD FreeSync Premium VRR, 500-nit brightness, Gorilla Glass Victus, and an anti-reflection treatment. Those are useful gaming features: VRR can make variable frame rates feel smoother, and the brightness is better suited to portable use than a dim basic panel.

It is not an OLED display. Blacks, contrast, and perceived image depth will not match an OLED handheld, and the 7-inch 16:9 format can feel cramped for strategy games, desktop applications, and games with small text. Buyers who prioritize OLED contrast or an 8-inch-class screen may prefer another device even if the Ally X offers stronger performance or more comfortable grips.
The 120Hz capability should also be treated as headroom, not a target for every game. Many demanding titles will make more sense at a locked 30fps or 60fps with VRR than at an unstable frame rate chasing the panel’s maximum refresh rate.
Does the Xbox interface actually fix Windows?
It substantially improves the front end, but it does not eliminate Windows friction.
The intended flow is much closer to a console:
- Complete the initial Windows setup and sign in to Microsoft and Xbox accounts.
- Install Windows, ASUS, AMD, and Xbox updates.
- Use the Xbox fullscreen experience to browse the library and supported storefront content.
- Install a game through Xbox or PC Game Pass, Steam, Epic, GOG, Battle.net, or another Windows-compatible source.
- Launch it from the fullscreen library where it is recognized, using the Xbox controls and Game Bar overlay for handheld settings.
- Open Armoury Crate SE, Command Center, or the Windows desktop when you need deeper controls.
In ordinary use, this reduces the need to poke at the Windows desktop. Xbox’s handheld interface is designed to aggregate supported Xbox and PC-store games, and the Xbox button opens a handheld-oriented Game Bar overlay.
But the illusion ends when a game requires a separate launcher, a password, a keyboard, a mouse, a permissions prompt, or a driver update. Windows updates can interrupt setup. A game may not appear correctly in the library. An overlay or launcher may fail to open. Some titles still have poor controller support. The recovery path is usually to reach the desktop, use the relevant launcher directly, restart the overlay or game, check for updates, and reconnect the required account. That flexibility is useful, but it is not SteamOS-level appliance simplicity.
Game compatibility is the Ally X’s central argument
Because it runs Windows, the Ally X can access a wider range of PC software than a SteamOS-first handheld. Its intended ecosystem includes:
- Xbox PC games and supported Game Pass titles.
- Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and Battle.net.
- Emulators and mods.
- Windows applications and desktop software.
- Xbox cloud gaming and remote play where the necessary subscription, network, and game support are available.
“Compatible” does not mean “effortless.” A title can run but still require a launcher, manual graphics tuning, keyboard input, a mouse, or a separate account. Anti-cheat systems and online games must be considered individually. Native PC games, remote play from an Xbox or PC, and cloud-streamed games are different experiences and should not be counted as the same kind of Xbox access.
Game Pass is particularly relevant for Xbox-oriented buyers, but its catalog, cloud availability, supported devices, and subscription terms can change. Check the current Xbox Game Pass offering before buying on the assumption that a specific game is included.
Docked play and storage
The two USB-C ports, including USB4, make the Ally X more versatile at a desk or television. With a compatible dock, display cable, power delivery, and external controls, it can function as a compact Windows gaming computer. It remains limited by its integrated APU, however; connecting it to a TV does not turn it into a desktop gaming PC.
The included 1TB PCIe Gen 4 M.2 2280 SSD is a sensible starting point, but modern PC games can consume it quickly. The microSD slot is convenient for less demanding games and general storage, though internal SSD performance may be preferable for large or heavily streamed games. ASUS lists the M.2 2280 format, but anyone planning an upgrade should verify the current service procedure, thermal requirements, recovery process, and warranty implications before opening the device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is $999.99 justified?
At its US list price, the Ally X is a premium purchase. The price is easier to defend if you want all of the following in one device:
- High-end Windows handheld performance.
- Xbox and PC storefront access.
- 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage out of the box.
- A large 80Wh battery.
- Controller-style ergonomics.
- USB-C docked play and ordinary Windows flexibility.
The price is harder to justify if your priorities are value, OLED contrast, a larger screen, SteamOS simplicity, or mostly indie and retro games. At this cost, a buyer should also consider a gaming laptop, a discounted previous-generation Windows handheld, or a Steam Deck OLED plus the substantial price difference.

How it compares with the main alternatives
Steam Deck OLED
The Steam Deck OLED remains the better fit for a Steam-focused buyer who values SteamOS, OLED contrast, and a lower price. It is less suitable for someone who needs straightforward access to Xbox PC games, Game Pass, Windows-only launchers, or the broadest compatibility. The Ally X targets higher performance and a wider Windows software ecosystem; the Deck targets a simpler, more focused experience.
Standard ROG Xbox Ally
The standard model is the more affordable entry point to the Xbox fullscreen experience. It uses the Ryzen Z2 A platform and a 60Wh battery rather than the Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and 80Wh battery. It makes more sense for lighter games and buyers willing to trade performance and endurance for a lower tier.
Lenovo Legion Go and larger Windows handhelds
A larger-screen Windows handheld may be preferable for strategy games, small text, and desktop work. The trade-offs are greater size and weight, different ergonomics, and varying software support. Buyers should compare the exact current model, processor, operating system, and price rather than assuming every Legion Go product is equivalent.
MSI Claw 8 AI-class devices
MSI’s larger-screen Windows handhelds appeal to buyers interested in alternative processor platforms and more display area. The Ally X’s counterargument is its integrated Xbox experience, controller-like grip design, and 80Wh battery. Independent comparisons such as TechSpot’s coverage treat the Ally X as a particularly comfortable and capable Windows option, not as the automatic winner for every screen or performance preference.
Should existing ROG Ally X owners upgrade?
This is a much less obvious purchase for someone who already owns the earlier ROG Ally X. Existing owners already have an 80Wh battery, a capable Windows handheld, a broadly similar display format, and an established library, dock, charger, and accessory setup.
The new device’s stronger upgrade arguments are the redesigned controller-style ergonomics, Xbox-specific hardware and software integration, 24GB of memory, the newer Z2 Extreme platform, and the second USB-C port with USB4. But the processor name alone does not guarantee a transformational improvement in every game. For an existing owner, the meaningful upgrade may be the experience of using the device rather than a proportional jump in frame rates.
Who should buy the ROG Xbox Ally X?
Buy it if you are an Xbox and PC player who wants one premium handheld for Xbox PC games, Game Pass, Steam, Epic, Battle.net, GOG, emulation, and mods; you value comfortable grips and a large battery; and you are willing to troubleshoot Windows occasionally.
It is especially compelling for someone who wants a handheld that can also become a docked Windows computer, rather than a device limited to one curated game store.
Recommended Free Tools
Who should skip it?
Skip it in favor of a Steam Deck OLED if your priority is SteamOS simplicity, OLED contrast, and value. Consider a larger-screen Windows alternative if small text and display area matter more than compactness. Keep an existing Ally X if you are seeking only a dramatic performance increase. And avoid the Ally X entirely if your definition of a console-like handheld means never seeing Windows, a launcher, an account prompt, or a troubleshooting screen.
Final verdict
The ROG Xbox Ally X gets closer than previous Windows handhelds to the “console simplicity plus PC flexibility” ideal. Its hardware is fast, comfortable, expandable, and unusually well suited to long portable sessions; its Xbox fullscreen experience makes the most common path to a game clearer; and Windows still provides the broad compatibility that SteamOS cannot always match.
It is not a conventional Xbox, not an OLED showcase, and not a maintenance-free console. The best description is a highly successful premium Windows handheld with an Xbox-oriented front end. If “everything I want” means broad PC access, Xbox-friendly navigation, strong controls, serious performance, and a large battery, the Ally X makes a persuasive case. If it means eliminating every Windows compromise, it does not.
