The famous Console cheats still circulate, but they are not official Chrome features. The jump-height, speed, and no-game-over snippets below are legacy JavaScript experiments that may fail in current Chrome, so this guide explains what they do, how to test them, and how to reset them safely.

Open the Chrome Dinosaur Game
The quickest way to play is to open a new Chrome tab, type chrome://dino/ in the address bar, and press Enter. You do not need to disconnect from the internet first. The same game normally appears automatically when Chrome cannot load a page because of a network error.
On a desktop keyboard, press Space or ↑ to begin and jump. Press ↓ to duck, and press Enter after a crash to restart. You can also open Chrome’s Dinosaur Game directly while online.

Touch controls are available on supported mobile presentations, and the Chromium game code also contains gamepad handling. Touch and controller behavior can vary by Chrome build, operating system, and device, so the on-screen controls are the best guide on a phone or tablet. A normal keyboard is all most desktop players need.
How to play the Dinosaur Game normally
Chrome Dino is an endless runner. The T-Rex runs automatically while you react to ground cacti and airborne obstacles. The run becomes more demanding because the game increases its speed over time toward a configured maximum. Your objective is simply to survive as long as possible and increase the distance shown on the meter.
- Start with short jumps. Use a quick tap for a nearby cactus instead of holding the jump key longer than necessary.
- Watch the next obstacle, not only the T-Rex. The game scrolls continuously, so begin judging the next obstacle as soon as you clear the current one.
- Duck under appropriate airborne obstacles. Press and hold ↓ only for the part of the obstacle that requires it.
- Release Down when you are clear. Ducking is an active state, not a general-purpose shield. Staying low can leave you poorly prepared for the next obstacle.
- Adjust to the increasing pace. A jump timing that works early in a run may be too slow later, when the T-Rex is moving faster.
The game is intentionally simple: there is no inventory, level selection, or combat system to learn. Its challenge comes from spacing, reaction time, and the gradual increase in speed.
What “hack” means in this guide
Here, hack means experimenting with the JavaScript state of the game in your own browser through Chrome DevTools. These changes are local to the current page session. They do not break into Chrome, modify the browser permanently, or change a server-side game account.
The most widely copied Chrome Dino cheats are old console recipes that refer to an internal global object called Runner.instance_. They can be interesting experiments, but they should not be described as guaranteed commands for every current Chrome release. Chrome’s implementation has changed over time, and the current Chromium source uses TypeScript, ES modules, private members, and a different debugging configuration path.

Open DevTools and the Console
- Open
chrome://dino/and wait for the game to load. - Right-click the game and choose Inspect.
- Select the Console tab in DevTools.
- Run only code you understand, one command at a time.
For experiments you expect to repeat, DevTools also provides local snippets under Sources > Snippets. A snippet is useful for learning and for keeping your own short test code organized, but saving a snippet does not make it part of Chrome or automatically apply it to every game. It remains in your local DevTools preferences until you delete it.
Legacy jump-height experiment
One commonly published older command is:
Runner.instance_.tRex.setJumpVelocity(15)In builds that expose the older object and method, the number changes the requested jump velocity. A larger value is intended to produce a higher jump; a smaller value is intended to produce a lower one. The value 15 is an example, not a universal recommended setting.
Run the command after the game has loaded. If it works, the change affects subsequent jumps in that page session. If Chrome reports Runner is not defined, says that instance_ or tRex is undefined, or produces no visible change, treat that as a compatibility failure rather than a signal to find a more obscure command.
Legacy speed experiment
Another frequently repeated command is:
Runner.instance_.setSpeed(1000)Older guides describe this as changing the T-Rex’s running speed. A value as large as 1000 is an extreme demonstration and may make the run effectively impossible to control. The current Chromium implementation still contains speed-setting logic, but the relevant method is private in the modern TypeScript implementation. Consequently, the old global-console form may fail or behave differently in a current production build.

Do not confuse a command that executes without an error with a command that is still fully supported. The game may accept a value temporarily, ignore it, or expose a different internal object depending on the Chrome build.

Older tutorials also replace the game’s gameOver method with an empty function:

Why these cheats may not work in current Chrome
The old snippets became popular because earlier versions exposed a globally reachable Runner object. That is an implementation detail, not a public Chrome API. The current Chromium source organizes the Dinosaur Game under components/neterror/resources/dino_game and separates the runner, T-Rex, obstacles, distance meter, game configuration, game state, and game-over panel into modules.
The current source also includes a debugging configuration pathway that can route an initialJumpVelocity setting through jump-velocity logic. That does not establish that a regular Chrome user can call the old Runner.instance_ command from the Console. In particular, a source-level method, a private method, and a globally exposed production object are three different things.
The practical rule is simple: regard the three snippets above as legacy, build-dependent experiments. They are not guaranteed features, and they are not evidence that your Chrome installation is damaged when they stop working.

How to reset every change
The simplest reset is to refresh the Dinosaur Game tab or close and reopen it. Console modifications apply to the currently loaded JavaScript context; they are not permanent Chrome settings. A fresh load reinstates the original game code and state.

If you saved an experiment under Sources > Snippets, refreshing does not delete the saved snippet. Delete the snippet separately if you do not want to keep it in DevTools. Conversely, deleting a snippet does not undo code that has already run in the current page—the page must still be refreshed.

Should you use a controller or buy special hardware?
No. A desktop keyboard provides the documented core controls, and supported touch versions show their own controls. Chromium includes gamepad event handling, but controller availability and exact button behavior depend on the Chrome build and platform. A USB controller is an optional experiment, not a requirement for playing or modifying the game.
Likewise, the game is part of Chrome’s network-error resources rather than a separately installed title. You do not need a dedicated game download, launcher, keyboard, or other accessory to access it.
Play or hack? Choose the right approach
- Want the intended challenge? Use Space or ↑ to jump and ↓ to duck, then adapt as the run accelerates.
- Want to learn how browser games work? Inspect the page, use the Console carefully, and save experiments as local snippets. Treat the legacy commands as examples of JavaScript state manipulation, not dependable Chrome features.
- Want an easier run? The jump-velocity experiment is the least disruptive of the three old recipes when it works. Test it in a throwaway tab and refresh when finished.
- Want to remove collisions entirely? The
gameOvermonkey patch demonstrates how replacing a method works, but it is the most invasive and build-sensitive option. - Want a command that works in every version? There is no guaranteed public console command for that. Use the normal game controls and avoid undocumented internals.
