From October 13 at 11:00 CEST through October 20 at 11:00 CEST, 2026, Embark is testing a PvE matchmaking toggle that disables player-to-player damage. If you play outside that limited test—or cannot use it for your chosen map condition—your best option is to manage exposure: set a modest objective, plan an exit, carry only what the run justifies, and leave optional encounters rather than relying on another Raider to be friendly.
Can you play ARC Raiders solo without PvP?
You can enter Topside alone, but a solo run is still part of an online multiplayer game. In the ordinary matchmaking experience, Raiders may be hostile, and choosing to queue alone does not turn off player-versus-player combat. The central loop remains the same: scavenge, contend with hostile ARC machines and other Raiders, then try to return safely to Speranza. The official PlayStation description characterizes the game as multiplayer-only while confirming that it is playable solo.

There is one important, time-limited exception. Embark’s PvE matchmaking toggle beta is scheduled to run from October 13, 2026, at 11:00 CEST through October 20, 2026, at 11:00 CEST. Embark’s October 13 update says the test is live. If the toggle is available in your game, opting into its PvE servers is the clearest way to avoid player-to-player damage during the test. It is not a permanent mode based on the information Embark has announced, and the test window has a firm end date.
Even in the beta, “PvE” means no player-to-player damage, not a safe or consequence-free expedition. ARC enemies, extraction risk, lower loot value, and eligibility restrictions still matter. Outside the beta, solo tactics can reduce how much time you spend exposed to other players, but they cannot guarantee a peaceful run.

What the October 2026 PvE toggle changes
Embark says the beta lets players switch between the standard PvPvE experience and new PvE servers. The test changes some of the risks of encountering another Raider, but it does not remove every interaction or danger in a run.
| Question | PvE beta | Standard solo PvPvE |
|---|---|---|
| Can another player damage you? | Player-to-player damage is disabled. | Other Raiders remain a possible PvP threat. |
| Do throwable items affect other players? | No. Embark says throwables, including stun and fire items, do not work on other players. | The beta rule does not apply; standard PvPvE remains in effect. |
| Are all player interactions removed? | No. Physical-interaction items such as barricades and ziplines remain unaffected. | Standard PvPvE rules apply. |
| What happens to loot value? | Overall loot value is lower, according to Embark. | The beta’s loot reduction does not describe the standard mode. |
| Can ARC still hurt you? | Yes. ARC enemies remain dangerous. | Yes. ARC is part of the ordinary extraction loop. |
| Can I use it on every map condition? | No. Night Raid, Locked Gate, Hidden Bunker, Frigate, and Redirection are excluded in the announcement. | The beta’s listed exclusions do not establish standard-mode availability. |
| Will queues take the same time? | Not necessarily. Embark says queue times may be affected in low-population regions and during quiet hours. | No queue-time comparison is stated in the announcement. |
Player damage is off, but the expedition is not risk-free
The most direct benefit is that a player cannot deal damage to you on the PvE servers under the announced rules. Embark also says throwable items—including stun and fire items—do not work on other players there. That rule is narrower than saying all player-related systems disappear: the announcement says physical-interaction items such as barricades and ziplines remain unaffected. Do not assume that other players are absent, that every interaction is disabled, or that an extraction is automatically safe.
ARC remains a live threat. Embark specifies an eight-second grace period after a player is downed before ARC can reacquire them. After that period, ARC may attack if it catches the player moving. Treat being downed as an urgent danger, not as a protected pause; the stated grace period is not immunity from the rest of the run’s risks.

Check the map condition before committing
The beta is unavailable for five named conditions: Night Raid, Locked Gate, Hidden Bunker, Frigate, and Redirection. Check the current map and condition in-game before planning around PvE. Do not assume that a map is eligible because it was eligible on an earlier run or that the toggle applies universally.

Map conditions also matter when you are not using the beta. The official PlayStation description says weather, time, and special conditions can change a run. Embark’s January 2026 notes, for example, said the Buried City Bird City condition could bring more combat around rooftops and more players in proximity. That is a dated example of condition-specific risk, not a claim that every current Buried City rotation has the same pattern.
The test is temporary, and its availability can affect queues
Embark’s October 12 announcement describes the toggle as a test; its October 13 update says player feedback and in-game data will help determine whether it becomes permanent. The announcement gives no basis for assuming it will remain available after October 20, 2026, at 11:00 CEST. Check the current in-game menu and official updates for any later change rather than treating the beta schedule as a standing feature.
Embark also cautions that the toggle may affect queue times in low-population regions and quiet hours. The announcement provides no wait-time figure, so there is no reliable number to use for planning. It also says standard matchmaking will continue to apply during PvPvE sessions while Embark gathers data on how the PvE toggle affects those sessions; that statement is not a promise that standard lobbies will become safer.
How to set up a lower-risk solo run
Outside an eligible PvE beta queue, think of a solo run as a short, deliberate expedition rather than a chance to collect everything. This plan applies the game’s scavenging-and-extraction loop and the map and loadout guidance in Epic Games Store’s beginner guide. It is risk management, not a guaranteed method of avoiding PvP.

These eye-catching lights give your setup a gamer-ready look while maintaining focus on performance. (*Note: The USB connector is for LED lighting only)
- Choose the matchmaking mode deliberately. If the PvE toggle is currently available and your chosen condition is eligible, select it before starting the run. Otherwise, understand that a solo queue remains PvPvE. Epic’s beginner guide says players selecting a map while alone can make a solo run and are more often matched with other solo players; “more often” is not a guarantee that every other Raider will be solo, non-hostile, or absent.
- Write down one purpose for the run. Decide whether you are going for a quest, a particular resource, or a short loot-and-extract route. A focused objective gives you a reason to leave when you have made useful progress. The longer you remain Topside for marginal gains, the longer you are exposed to the run’s remaining risks. That is a practical inference from the extraction loop, not a developer promise about encounter rates.
- Inspect the current map condition. Check whether it affects your preferred route, changes where activity may concentrate, or makes the PvE beta unavailable. Do not carry assumptions from yesterday’s rotation into today’s run; weather, time, and special conditions can change the expedition.
- Choose a route with a known exit. Before entering, identify the area you need, the landmarks that will help you orient yourself, and a plausible extraction option. Epic’s guide specifically calls out learning resource areas and extraction locations, including Raider Hatches, Cargo Elevators, and Airshafts. Knowing an exit in advance gives your run a stopping point; it does not guarantee that the route or extraction will be uncontested.
- Pack for the objective, not for every possible fight. Epic’s beginner guide describes a loadout that can include an augment, shield, up to two weapons, ammunition, and consumable or throwable items. Bring what your planned task justifies rather than loading for an imagined worst case. A Free Loadout option is also described in the guide; it can be a sensible way to limit the gear at stake on a low-stakes run, but it does not guarantee survival.
- Set a leave condition before you deploy. For example, decide to extract once you complete the quest step or find the resource you came for, rather than extending the run for one more container. This is a personal risk-management rule, not a game mechanic. It prevents an optional detour from silently becoming the main objective.
- Reassess when the run changes. If the current condition, an unexpected detour, or a nearby Raider makes your planned route unattractive, choose another route or leave the area. Do not treat the original plan as an obligation when the risks have changed.
How to react when another Raider is nearby
If avoiding PvP is the priority, do not turn every sighting into a test of whether the other player is friendly. A low-PvP plan favors disengagement: change direction, give the area a wide berth, or abandon the optional objective. Voice chat, emotes, or an apparently friendly approach may communicate intent, but none is enforceable protection. The official PlayStation description warns that Raiders may prey on others, and standard solo matchmaking does not remove that possibility.
Use a simple decision rule
- If the encounter is avoidable and the objective is optional: leave the area rather than closing distance to investigate.
- If the objective requires staying nearby: weigh its value against the additional exposure, and decide whether a different route or a later attempt is preferable.
- If you are in the PvE beta: player damage is disabled under the announced rules, but do not confuse that with protection from ARC or from every other risk.
- If you are downed: prioritize the ARC threat. Embark’s stated eight-second grace period before reacquisition is limited; after it, ARC may attack if it catches you moving.
These are conservative choices, not a claim that changing direction always succeeds or that every Raider will pursue you. The available evidence does not establish a reliable tactic for predicting another player’s intentions or a guaranteed way to escape an encounter.

ARC Raiders does analyze player behavior for matchmaking. In a PC Gamer interview published December 15, 2025, art director Robert Sammelin said, “Without going into excruciating detail, it is quite complex. We do analyze behavior and match accordingly.” That confirms behavior is considered, but Sammelin did not disclose the full system.

The report frames this as an adjustment during a trial period. That is useful context, but it does not reveal all matchmaking factors or establish that a peaceful player will reliably receive peaceful lobbies. It also does not provide a repeatable matchmaking exploit. Play to manage the run in front of you, not to try to manipulate a hidden estimate.

Deciding between the PvE beta and a standard solo run
Use the option that best fits your immediate priority, while accounting for what the announced rules actually promise. The beta is the more direct choice when avoiding damage from other players matters most and your map condition is eligible. A standard solo run may suit a goal that requires a condition excluded from the test, or a player who chooses to accept ordinary PvPvE exposure. The beta’s lower overall loot value is a real trade-off, not a reason to assume one mode is better for every objective.
| Choose this approach | It fits when… | Account for… |
|---|---|---|
| PvE beta toggle | You want the announced protection from player-to-player damage during the October 13–20 test and your selected condition is eligible. | Lower overall loot value, ARC danger, extraction risk, possible queue effects, and the test end date. |
| Standard solo PvPvE | You want to play alone in the ordinary experience or need a condition excluded from the beta. | Other Raiders can remain a PvP threat; solo selection is not a promise of peaceful or exclusively solo opponents. |
For an ordinary solo run, compare the value of the objective with the exposure it demands: how far you must travel, whether you know the route and exits, whether the condition could concentrate activity, and how much gear you are willing to risk. These are planning questions, not an official scoring system. If the objective is low value and the route leaves you without a clear exit, choosing a smaller goal is a sounder fit for a cautious run.
Audio awareness and other limits of the advice
Embark’s January 2026 patch notes mention changes to outdoor footsteps and footstep audio, so listening can be a useful part of awareness. A gaming headset may help you hear the game’s audio more clearly, but the cited information does not show that a particular headset guarantees detection, prevents an ambush, or changes the outcome of an encounter. Treat audio as one cue alongside the map and your route, not as a substitute for either.
There is no independently sourced statistic here showing how much solo queueing, a headset, or peaceful behavior reduces PvP encounters. The concrete figures are limited to the official beta schedule and its mechanics, including the eight-second period before ARC may reacquire a downed player. No encounter-rate or survival percentage should be inferred from those details.
Quick Recap
What to verify before your next run
- Whether the PvE toggle is still present in the current in-game matchmaking menu; the announced beta ends October 20, 2026, at 11:00 CEST.
- Whether your chosen map condition is one of the five excluded from the beta.
- What the current condition means for your planned route and whether a better-known exit is available.
- Whether your objective justifies the gear and time you are putting at risk.
- Whether a later official Embark update has changed the toggle’s duration, rules, or status.
