Choose a mage focus that fits how you want to fight
A custom class lets you center your major skills on the magic you expect to use. Spell costs depend on your skill in the spell’s school, according to the original PC manual, so developing a school you rely on can make its spells more practical over time. The manual predates Remastered; treat it as a broad description of game mechanics, not confirmation of current balance or exact costs.

Direct damage with support
Destruction gives you offensive options such as fire, frost, and shock. Pair it with Restoration if you want healing, recovery, and protection, or with Alteration for defensive effects and useful abilities such as water breathing. Conjuration provides summons and magical weapons, making it a natural choice if you like having help in a fight. Illusion affects perception and minds; examples in the original manual include invisibility and charm. Mysticism covers effects such as telekinesis and soul trap. These schools can complement direct damage or form the center of a less conventional approach.

Potions and poisons
Alchemy is listed by Bethesda as a magic skill and lets you create potions and poisons. It can support a mage without requiring every combat problem to be solved by casting a spell.
Set attributes around your Magicka needs
Bethesda’s Remastered leveling guidance identifies Intelligence as the attribute that affects total Magicka and Willpower as the one that affects Magicka regeneration. Prioritize them according to whether you need a larger reserve, faster recovery, or a balance of both. Consider survivability or mobility attributes based on whether your mage uses armor, carries a weapon, or avoids close combat.

Each level-up grants 12 Virtue Points. You can assign up to 5 points to one attribute and distribute points across up to 3 attributes on that level-up. Use those limits to improve the attributes your actual play is putting under pressure rather than treating every level as an automatic Intelligence increase.
Choose major skills with leveling in mind
Skills improve through use, and Bethesda says major skills advance character level faster than minor skills. You must sleep to take a level after your skills have earned one. Because enemies scale with your character level, making many appealing but seldom-used skills major can push character progression without keeping your fighting ability in step.

For a focused caster, make the schools you will use regularly central to the class. If you prefer a hybrid mage, a weapon or armor skill can provide a fallback, but it spreads your skill focus. Neither approach is an established universal optimum: choose based on the combat style you can sustain as enemies scale.

- Offense: a Destruction spell for dealing damage.
- Survival: a Restoration spell for healing or protection, or an Alteration spell for defense.
- Utility or control: a spell from Conjuration, Illusion, Mysticism, or Alteration that suits the situation.
This is a practical way to cover different needs, not a tested combat rotation. If a spell’s Magicka cost is a problem, remember that the original manual says cost depends on skill in its school; it does not establish a precise current Remastered threshold.

Bethesda’s default PC keyboard-and-mouse controls use C to cast, F3 to open Magic, and keys 1–8 for shortcut slots. Custom bindings may differ, and controller controls vary by platform, so check the in-game control settings for your setup.

- Open Magic with F3 on default PC controls and select the spells you want ready.
- Assign frequently used spells to shortcut slots 1–8 using your configured controls.
- Before a fight, confirm that your offensive, defensive or recovery, and utility options are accessible.
- Use C to cast on default PC controls. The HUD shortcut radial does not pause the game, so configure or change shortcuts before combat when possible.
