To play Among Us in real life, secretly assign Impostors and Crewmates, give Crewmates safe tasks to complete, and let players call meetings to discuss and vote on suspicions. This is a fan-made adaptation of the video game’s social-deduction loop, not an official live-action rulebook; the host sets the practical rules.

What carries over from the video game?

Innersloth describes Among Us as “a party game of teamwork and betrayal.” In the digital game, 4–15 players play online or over local Wi-Fi. Crewmates work to fill the task bar or eject the Impostors; Impostors try to eliminate Crewmates, can pretend to do tasks, use vents, and sabotage. Players can call emergency meetings after finding a body or noticing suspicious behavior, then discuss and vote.

Those mechanics provide a framework, not instructions for an in-person game. The following are host-set house rules. The official 4–15-player range applies to the digital game; the sources do not establish a tested group size or duration for playing in person.

How to set up a real-life round

  1. Choose the play area and boundaries

Pick a space with clear routes and identify where players may go and where tasks will happen. Before play, explain any off-limits areas and how players should move. Choose a non-contact elimination method—such as a gentle tag or handing over a token—and state it clearly. These are safety-minded host choices, not official Among Us rules. Do not run indoors, hide in unsafe places, or imitate violence.

Among Us: Crewmate Edition - Nintendo Switch
    • Crewmate Edition Includes: See description below for complete details
    • Life as a Crewmate: Complete all your tasks on the ship to win but watch out for Impostors. Report dead bodies and call emergency meetings to vote the Impostors out. Hope you chose correctly
    • Play as an Impostor: Cause chaos, sneak around, and frame innocent bystanders. Winning involves killing off every Crewmate - think you’re a master of sabotage
    • Customization: Choose how you want to play. Add more impostors, tasks, decrease visibility and more. All in style as you get to choose your favorite color, outfit, and hat
    • Cross-platform: Play with your friends between PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, Android, and iOS
  2. Assign secret roles

Write “Impostor” and “Crewmate” on slips or cards, shuffle them, and give one to each player without revealing the roles. Choose the number of Impostors to suit your group. No validated real-life role ratio is established, so treat the balance as a house rule and adjust it if one side has too large an advantage.

  3. Prepare safe tasks

Write brief tasks on slips or make a checklist for each Crewmate. Tasks might involve matching cards, sorting objects, or completing a simple puzzle. Put tasks at marked stations or let players carry a checklist and complete tasks while moving around the play area. A free adaptation called The Crew by IRL Party Games illustrates checklist-based task play; the Among Sus print-and-play rules show a more structured task-and-meeting format. Both are fan-made adaptations, not official rules.

    • IMMERSIVE DEDUCTION EXPERIENCE – Step into a tense village mystery where players take on hidden roles and work together to uncover the Werewolves through logic, discussion, and quick decisions
    • QUICK 10-MINUTE ROUNDS – Fast gameplay makes it ideal for classrooms, family gatherings, and mixed-experience game groups; easy setup and simultaneous play allow for multiple back-to-back sessions
    • SECRET ROLES & STRATEGY – Each player receives a unique identity like Seer, Troublemaker, or Werewolf, encouraging bluffing, analysis, and strategic interaction that keeps every game engaging
    • EASY TO LEARN, EXCITING TO MASTER – Simple rules and real-time play make the game accessible for newcomers, while varied role combinations create depth and replay value for experienced players
    • EXPANDABLE & HIGHLY REPLAYABLE – No two sessions are the same, and expansions such as Daybreak, Vampire, or Alien introduce new characters and twists to build a deeper social deduction experience
  4. Agree on meetings and voting

Decide how players can stop the round to discuss: they might call “emergency meeting” aloud, go to a designated meeting point, or use an agreed signal. The Among Sus print-and-play rules list options including a hand bell, buzzer, or metal triangle; none is required. At a meeting, give players a brief chance to explain suspicions, then have everyone vote or skip, according to the rules you chose. In the video game, meetings lead to discussion and a vote; the exact live-action procedure is up to the host.

  5. Set the win conditions before starting

A straightforward house rule is that Crewmates win when they finish a set task quota or vote out all Impostors. Impostors win when they reduce the remaining Crewmates to a threshold the host has announced in advance. The digital game uses task completion or ejecting the Impostors as crew objectives, but a live-action quota and elimination threshold are not standardized.

Choose a format that suits your group

Two useful approaches appear in fan-made adaptations: continuous checklist play and a more organized station-based round. The best fit depends on whether your group wants free movement or a tightly managed sequence.

Spark your children’s interest in the game, or reward them if they’re already fans.
  • PERFECT AS AMONG US GIFTS. A whole pack of Among Us merch is a great gift idea, especially if your or your friends’ children have tried out and liked the game. The pack will also come in handy if you’re looking for simple Among Us birthday party supplies, and it can even be used as Among Us birthday decorations. Get the right pack to help a young enthusiast complete their collection or start one from scratch. Perhaps, an adult AmongUs small toys collector will appreciate the gift, too.
Format How it works Setup and supervision Task tracking
Checklist during normal activity Players complete checklist tasks as they move around and interact. Less formal setup; the host may need to keep the round moving and clarify disputes. Simple if players mark completed tasks, but the host may need to verify progress.
Stations with a meeting signal Players visit designated task locations; a spoken call or physical signal brings everyone together. Requires more preparation to place tasks and explain the signal, but provides a more organized round. Clearer when tasks are assigned to stations and completion is checked there.

Keep the game fair and easy to follow

  • Explain the boundaries, elimination method, meeting signal, voting procedure, and win conditions before distributing roles.
  • Keep tasks short, safe, and possible to finish in the time available.
  • Use a clear, non-contact elimination rule and stop play if anyone is uncomfortable.
  • Have the host settle unclear situations consistently, especially whether a task counts as complete or a meeting was successfully called.
