To play as Toad in Super Mario Maker 2, start a multiplayer course and select Toad from the character choices. Toad is a selectable multiplayer character—not a transformation unlocked with an item. Nintendo confirms the character choice for multiplayer, but the official information cited here does not confirm a way to switch to Toad in single-player Story Mode.
How to select Toad
- Enter a multiplayer course mode.
- At the character-selection screen, choose Toad for your player.
- Start the course. If you are playing with others, each player can choose from the available character options.
Nintendo lists Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Toadette as playable characters in multiplayer on its Super Mario Maker 2 page. The game supports local multiplayer on one system, with up to four players playing created courses at the same time.

What if you mean Story Mode?
The official information cited here confirms Toad as a multiplayer character, but does not confirm a way to change the character in single-player Story Mode. So if you are playing Story Mode alone and cannot find a character-selection option, the documented route to Toad is multiplayer—not an item or outfit unlock.
Local, nearby, and online multiplayer
You can play locally on one Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s version 1.1.0 notes also describe Nearby Play and LAN Play, and say online play with friends is available in Multiplayer Versus or Multiplayer Co-op. Online features require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and Nintendo says the game must be updated to use internet features. Toad is not an item transformation
Picking Toad is different from collecting a power-up. For example, in the Super Mario 3D World style, the Super Bell transforms Mario into Cat Mario, as described in the Play Nintendo beginner guide. That transformation does not unlock Toad; choose Toad through multiplayer character selection.
