You can play Atari 2600 games on a handheld by running Stella directly or by opening RetroArch and loading its Stella core, then selecting an authorized cartridge image. The exact menus depend on your device and front end, but the essentials are the same: a working Stella emulator, a game file the emulator can read, and controls mapped to the game’s inputs.
What you need
- A handheld that can run RetroArch with its Stella core, or a handheld that supports a Stella port. Stella is a multi-platform Atari 2600 emulator; the project’s user guide describes its features and supported platforms. A Retroid compatibility guide documents a RetroArch-and-Stella route for the Retroid devices it covers, but that is not a compatibility guarantee for every handheld or model.
- An Atari 2600 cartridge image you are authorized to use. The emulator is software; do not assume the handheld or emulator includes game files.
- Access to the handheld’s storage and controls so you can select the file and map the game inputs.
Stella’s guide identifies homebrew games and purchased Activision Atari 2600 Action Packs as possible sources for game images. It also warns that using images of games you do not own may be illegal. Laws vary by jurisdiction, and that warning is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. See the Stella User’s Guide for the project’s explanation.
Set up Atari 2600 games on the handheld
- Choose an emulator route. Open RetroArch and make sure the Stella core is available, or use a suitable Stella port if your handheld supports one. Menu labels and installation steps vary by operating system and front end. The Retroid guide is specific to the devices it discusses.
- Place the game image in accessible storage. Use the handheld’s file browser or another location the emulator can browse. Libretro’s Stella core documentation lists
.a26,.bin, and.zipas supported content extensions. - Load the Stella core and select the game. In RetroArch, select the Stella core, then browse to and open the cartridge image. The precise content-loading path differs by front end.
- Check the controls. The Atari joystick inputs include Fire and directions, while games may also use Select, Reset, and difficulty or color controls. Libretro documents the Stella core’s joypad mapping; inspect the core mapping and remap buttons if the handheld’s defaults do not match the game.
- Start the game using its own input. If the title screen appears to wait, try the mapped Select, Reset, or Fire input. Stella’s FAQ notes that the required start input varies by game, so consult that title’s manual when needed.
Controls and game-specific behavior
Atari 2600 games do not all use controls in the same way. A handheld should be able to provide the joystick directions and Fire input, but a title may also rely on Select or Reset, or on a controller type beyond the usual joystick. Check the game’s manual and Stella’s control information rather than assuming every title starts or plays with one universal button layout.
Libretro reports the Stella core’s aspect ratio as 4:3. A handheld screen with a different shape may show borders or use scaling options; the available display settings depend on the device and front end.

Save states and ordinary saves
Libretro marks save states and rewind as supported by the Stella core, while its feature table marks ordinary saves as unsupported. Save-state access and menu placement depend on the front end and version, so check the handheld’s RetroArch menus rather than expecting a game’s normal save system to work.
Troubleshooting
The game file does not appear
- Check that the file uses a documented Stella-core extension:
.a26,.bin, or.zip. - Make sure it is stored somewhere the handheld’s content browser can access.
- Confirm that Stella is selected as the core before browsing for the game.
The game opens but seems stuck at the title screen
Try the mapped Select, Reset, and Fire inputs one at a time. The correct start action varies by game; use the title’s manual if those inputs do not work.

The character does not move or the buttons are wrong
Review the Stella core’s joypad mapping in RetroArch and remap the handheld’s buttons to the expected Atari inputs. Also check the game’s controller requirements: some titles use a controller type other than the standard joystick.
A custom-controller homebrew game is not recognized correctly
Stella’s FAQ says its internal database or ROM analysis may not recognize some newer custom-controller ROMs. For desktop Stella, the documented remedy is to choose the controller type in Game Properties; the exact menu can differ in handheld ports.

Does this work on every handheld?
No universal compatibility claim follows from the available setup guidance. The Retroid guide documents Stella through RetroArch for the Retroid devices it covers, while other handhelds can differ in operating system, core availability, storage access, and button mapping. Check the exact device’s support for RetroArch or a Stella port before relying on this route.
