How to Play Big Walk on a TV Without Owning an Xbox

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You do not need an Xbox to play Big Walk on a television. The game’s current official platforms are Windows and Mac through Steam, the Mac App Store, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox is not on that list, so an Xbox console is neither required nor a supported platform at this time.

The practical choices are straightforward: connect a Windows PC or Mac to the TV with HDMI, stream the computer to a compatible TV device with Steam Link, or play the native PS5 or Switch 2 version. The game still runs on whichever supported computer or console you choose; the TV is only the display in the computer-streaming setups.

What you need to know about Xbox support

Big Walk is not currently listed for Xbox consoles. Its official FAQ names Windows and Mac (through Steam and the Mac App Store), PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, and says that no other platforms are planned at this time. That answers both the hardware and platform questions: you do not need an Xbox, and there is no current Xbox version to install.

The same distinction applies to an Xbox-branded controller. The Steam listing marks Big Walk as fully controller-supported and identifies Xbox and PlayStation controllers as supported input devices. An Xbox controller can therefore be convenient hardware, but it is optional; the Xbox console itself is not the platform running the game.

The current official platform information also gives no basis for claiming an Xbox or Game Pass edition. If you want to play on a TV today, use one of the supported routes below.

Choose the TV route that matches your hardware

Route Where the game runs How the TV receives the picture Hardware called for by the setup Best fit
Direct computer connection Windows PC or Mac running the Steam version HDMI from the computer to a TV input Computer video output, a matching cable or adapter, and the TV You can place the computer near the television and want the simplest signal path
Steam Link or Steam Remote Play Windows PC or Mac running Steam Video and audio streamed across the home network to a compatible TV device Host computer, compatible Steam Link device or TV app, and a usable home network The computer is in another room
PlayStation 5 PS5 running the native version Normal PS5-to-TV connection PS5 and its usual TV connection You already own a PS5 and do not want a computer in the setup
Nintendo Switch 2 docked mode Switch 2 running the native version Dock output through HDMI Switch 2 dock, AC adapter, and HDMI cable You want a portable console that can move between handheld and TV play

There is no universal performance or latency guarantee for network streaming in the official material, so the direct HDMI route avoids an extra streaming step. Steam Link is useful when distance matters, but its experience depends on the host computer, the TV device, and the home network working together.

Route 1: connect a Windows PC or Mac directly to the TV

This is the most predictable computer-based arrangement. Purchase the Steam version for Windows or Mac, connect the computer’s video output to an HDMI input on the television, and use Steam’s TV-oriented interface from the sofa.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the computer and cable before buying accessories

  • Confirm that the computer is a Windows PC or Mac capable of running Steam and that it has a video output compatible with the TV’s available input.
  • Use an HDMI cable when the computer has HDMI out. If it uses another connector, choose an adapter that explicitly converts that output to HDMI.
  • Do not assume that every USB-C port carries video. Check the computer’s specification for video-output support before relying on a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.
  • Identify the HDMI input you will use on the television so you can select the matching source after connecting the cable.

Set up the game for a couch interface

  1. Install Steam on the Windows PC or Mac and install Big Walk from its Steam listing.
  2. Connect the computer’s video output to an HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Turn on the television and select the HDMI input used by the computer.
  4. Launch Steam and open Big Picture mode. Steam describes Big Picture as an interface designed for use with a TV and game controller.
  5. Start Big Walk from Big Picture and confirm that the TV is showing the game before settling into the play session.

The game’s Steam listing identifies full controller support. A compatible PlayStation, Nintendo, or Xbox controller can make the sofa setup easier, but keyboard and mouse remain an option if that is more practical at your seating distance.

  • Easier than ever to set up – Now with Direct Power, it's powered by your TV with the included USB-C cable and eliminates the need for a wall adapter.

When direct HDMI is the better choice

Use a direct cable when the computer can sit close enough to the TV, when you want to remove wireless variables, or when you are diagnosing a streaming problem. The television is acting as an external display; the computer still supplies the game, controls, and Steam session.

Route 2: stream the computer with Steam Link or Steam Remote Play

Steam Remote Play lets a TV device receive video and audio from a computer running Steam while sending controller input back to that computer. In this arrangement, Big Walk does not run on the television or on the streaming device. It runs on the Windows PC or Mac designated as the host.

Prepare the host computer

  1. Install Steam and the Steam version of Big Walk on the Windows PC or Mac.
  2. Leave Steam running on that computer when you want to play from the TV.
  3. Place the computer on a usable home network connection. The stream depends on the host computer remaining reachable by the TV device.

Connect a compatible TV device

  1. Install Steam Link on a compatible TV device, or use a supported TV app where one is available.
  2. Sign in and pair the TV device with the computer running Steam.
  3. Launch Big Walk through the Steam Link interface.
  4. Connect and configure the controller you intend to use before starting an online session.

Compatibility is device-specific. A smart-TV model is not automatically guaranteed to support the Steam Link app, so check the supported-device information for the particular television or streaming hardware before purchasing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make streaming easier to diagnose

If the TV cannot find the game, first verify that Steam is open on the host computer and that both devices are on the same usable home network. If the stream starts but controls do not reach the game, check the controller pairing at the TV device and then confirm that Steam recognizes the controller. A direct HDMI connection is a useful fallback when you need to determine whether the problem is the game, the computer, or the network path.

  • Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.

Route 3: play the native PS5 version

The official press kit lists PlayStation 5 as a native platform. Connect the PS5 to the television normally and launch the PS5 version; no Xbox hardware or computer is involved.

Standard TV setup

  1. Connect the PS5 to the TV using the console’s normal HDMI connection.
  2. Select the TV input used by the PS5.
  3. Install or launch Big Walk on the PS5 and connect the controller you will use.

PlayStation also documents Remote Play to compatible devices over a broadband network. That can be useful when the PS5 is not beside the screen, but it remains a PS5-hosted session rather than a separate TV version of the game. Check the compatibility and network requirements for the device you plan to use.

Route 4: play the native Nintendo Switch 2 version in TV mode

The press kit lists Nintendo Switch 2 as a native platform. Nintendo’s TV-mode instructions specifically call for the Switch 2 dock, AC adapter, and HDMI cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Docked setup

  1. Connect the AC adapter to the dock and to power.
  2. Connect an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the television.
  3. Place the Switch 2 in the dock.
  4. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the dock.
  5. Start Big Walk and connect the controller configuration you prefer.

The dock is essential for this TV route. If you have only the handheld console and no dock, you do not yet have the hardware Nintendo specifies for displaying Switch games on a larger screen.

  • Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.

Controllers, players, and online co-op

Big Walk is an online cooperative game, not a local-only couch-co-op title. The official press kit gives a player range of “2–12,” and the Steam listing identifies online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, and full controller support.

A TV connection changes where you see the game; it does not turn the session into local multiplayer on one screen. Other players should plan to join online through their own supported platform. Cross-platform play is advertised, but the official materials do not promise that every platform combination or account configuration will behave identically in every region.

Choosing an input device

  • Use a controller if the seating position makes a keyboard and mouse awkward.
  • Steam’s listing identifies Xbox and PlayStation controller support, and Steam Big Picture is built around TV-and-controller use.
  • An Xbox controller is optional input hardware. Buying one does not mean buying or owning an Xbox console.
  • For Switch 2 and PS5, use the controller arrangement supported by the console in its normal TV mode.

What to buy—and what not to assume

Required or clearly identified items

  • Direct PC or Mac: a computer with a compatible video output, the matching cable or adapter, and a free HDMI input on the TV.
  • Steam Link: a Windows PC or Mac that hosts Steam, a compatible TV device or supported TV app, and a usable home network.
  • Switch 2 TV mode: the console’s dock, AC adapter, and an HDMI cable, as specified by Nintendo.
  • Any route: a copy of the game for the supported platform you are using and an input device that suits your play position.

Things the official setup does not establish

The published information does not provide a universal streaming-latency figure, a guaranteed performance level for every computer, or a universal list of smart-TV models that support Steam Link. Avoid buying a television or adapter on the assumption that one number or one app-support claim applies to every setup. Match the accessory to the hardware you actually own.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The TV says “no signal” with a PC or Mac

  • Confirm that the HDMI cable is connected to the computer’s video output and the TV input you selected.
  • Use the television’s input control to select the exact HDMI port in use.
  • If you are using USB-C or another adapter, verify that the computer’s port supports video output and that the adapter matches it.
  • Test the computer’s picture on the TV before opening the game. If the desktop never appears, the issue is the display connection rather than Big Walk.

Steam Link cannot find the computer

  • Keep Steam open on the host PC or Mac.
  • Check that the host and the TV device are connected to the same usable home network.
  • Verify that the particular TV model or streaming device supports Steam Link or the relevant TV app.
  • Use direct HDMI as a control test. If the game works by cable, focus troubleshooting on the network or streaming device.

The controller is not responding

  • Pair the controller with the device that is actually running the game or receiving the Steam Link session.
  • Open Steam Big Picture for the computer route and confirm that Steam sees the controller.
  • Try another supported controller if the current one is not detected. Full controller support is listed for the Steam version, but the controller still has to be connected correctly.

Switch 2 shows no picture in TV mode

  • Check that the dock has AC power.
  • Confirm that the HDMI cable runs from the dock to the selected TV input.
  • Reseat the console in the dock, then select the matching HDMI source again.

The PC version crashes or freezes

Start with the PC troubleshooting guidance in the official Big Walk FAQ. Do not assume that a third-party utility is required; the official support path should be your first reference for a crash or freeze.

Remote Play works inconsistently

Remote Play depends on the host console or computer, the receiving device, and the broadband home network. Confirm those three pieces independently, then switch to a direct TV connection when you need to separate a game problem from a streaming problem.

Which option should you choose?

Choose direct HDMI if you own a capable computer

This is the shortest path from the machine running Big Walk to the screen. It is especially sensible when the computer can be placed near the TV and you already have the appropriate cable or adapter.

Choose Steam Link if the computer must stay elsewhere

Steam Link preserves the Steam installation on the computer while moving the picture and controls to the TV area. Confirm TV-device compatibility and network reliability before committing to this arrangement.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Choose PS5 if that console is already your main system

The PS5 route avoids computer display setup and uses the native console version. Its normal HDMI connection is the simplest choice for a PS5 owner.

Choose Switch 2 if you want one console for handheld and TV play

Switch 2 provides a native option with a defined docked-TV requirement: dock, AC adapter, and HDMI cable. Make sure those pieces are available before planning a TV session.

Bottom line for a non-Xbox owner

Use Steam on a Windows PC or Mac and connect it to the TV directly, or stream that computer with Steam Link. If you prefer a console, the official native alternatives are PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox hardware is not required, Xbox is not in the current official platform list, and an Xbox controller—while supported—is only an optional way to control the game.
