Short answer: treat every locked door in Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival as the end of a clue chain. Search the nearby rooms for a named key, a code hidden in notes or photographs, a missing statue component, or a diagram showing how to use the Genesis Configuration. Conventional locks accept a matching item; environmental gates require you to retrieve a part and reshape the Configuration to fit its relief.
This guide covers the documented solutions for the skull-and-mouth-door sequence, the graveyard-house safe, statue gates, the heart-shaped door, the chained bedroom, and the looping-room puzzle. How the lock puzzles work
Revival mixes familiar survival-horror locks with puzzles that physically alter the environment. A locked door is therefore not always asking for a key in your inventory. It may be asking you to interpret a clue, manipulate a three-dimensional object, or notice that the room itself is directing you toward an apparently backward route.
Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin explained in the official PlayStation Blog interview that “We use the Genesis Configuration – a puzzle box – at the centre of things.” It is a world-manipulation tool as well as an object you carry through the campaign. The same interview describes a labyrinth in which “The labyrinth Aidan is trapped in is intertwined with the real world,” so changes in one space can provide the answer in another.

Some locks have one intended answer; the developer interview also says that other puzzles can permit multiple solutions. If an apparently correct object does not work, assume that the clue chain is incomplete rather than repeatedly forcing the same interaction.
A reliable method for every locked door
Use the following sequence before looking for a specific answer. It prevents you from overlooking the small environmental details that Revival uses as its instructions.
- Search the lock’s immediate area. Check desks, shelves, bodies, side rooms, and the floor around the frame. Keys and puzzle components are often placed close to the barrier they open, but not necessarily in the same room.
- Inspect every readable object. Open notes, rotate photographs, and examine diagrams rather than merely collecting them. Dates may be a code, while a sketch can show the orientation of a mechanism.
- Examine the door itself. Look for a keyhole, a slot, a statue relief, a mouth, chains, or a picture mechanism. The shape tells you which category of solution you need.
- Check the inventory for a named match. A Bedroom Key, Tongue Key, hand, tongue, or heart-shaped inset is meant for a correspondingly named lock or relief. If the item has an unusual shape, look for a matching recess rather than a conventional keyhole.
- Test the Genesis Configuration only where the environment signals it. Reliefs and statue sockets indicate that the box must be transformed. Randomly rotating it in front of an ordinary door will not solve the clue.
- Re-scan after a major change. Opening a skull, completing a statue, or changing a room can reveal a second item or alter the route. A door that was previously decorative may become the next objective.
This approach also tells you when to stop searching the current room. If there is no slot, keyhole, diagram, or other interaction point, the door may be a destination unlocked by an event elsewhere rather than a puzzle you can finish immediately.

The first highly specific door solution documented for the game appears in the cult compound, shortly after the first save point and the clothing change. A fleshy mouth door blocks the route. The key is inside a barbed-wire skull sitting on a desk.
Exact pin order
- Pick up the skull and inspect it from the orientation shown when you first collect it.
- Press the pin on the right side.
- Press the pin on the back/top. This means the pin on the top of the skull’s back, not simply the highest pin visible from the front. Rotate the skull if necessary.
- Press the pin on the left side.
- Press the pin at the top/center.
- When the jaw opens after the fourth press, take the Tongue Key.
- Return to the fleshy mouth door and use the Tongue Key on it.
The orientation warning is the part most likely to cause a failed attempt. “Back/top” refers to the skull’s rear upper pin, so viewing only the front can make the sequence appear impossible. If the jaw does not open, rotate the model and verify that the second press was on the rear upper pin rather than another top-facing pin.
Spoiler: codes, notes, and picture locks
Revival’s conventional combinations are designed to be read from the environment, not guessed from a universal code list. The developer interview specifically mentions safe combinations and sliding picture locks, with diagrams on desks serving as possible hints.

Graveyard-house safe code: 9606
In the graveyard house, read the note and then examine the photograph. The walkthrough identifies the two relevant dates as 96 and 06; together they form the four-digit safe code 9606. Enter 9-6-0-6 in that order. The safe contains a pistol upgrade.
The dates are a useful example of how to parse later locks: do not assume that every number in a document belongs in the combination. Look for a pair, sequence, or visual grouping that the room presents as intentional. A photo can supply context that the note alone does not.
Sliding picture locks
For a picture lock, compare the movable tiles with the nearby diagram or other environmental image. Establish which edge or landmark should align first, then slide the pieces into place while checking the whole image rather than one tile. If the lock accepts a binary arrangement, one completed image will open it; if the mechanism allows several valid arrangements, use the scene’s diagram to identify the intended one.
When a number pad or picture panel rejects a plausible answer, return to the clue and inspect it from every angle. A desk diagram may include an orientation mark, while a photograph can hide a second date or ordering cue until it is rotated or examined closely.
Genesis Configuration gates and statue pieces
Several courtyard gates use a two-part solution. First, recover the missing piece of a statue—examples described in the walkthrough include a hand and a tongue. Second, use the Genesis Configuration to reproduce the shape shown by the statue’s relief. The piece alone does not open the gate, and the transformed box does not substitute for the missing piece.
Courtyard gate procedure
- Inspect the sealed gate and identify the incomplete statue or empty relief.
- Explore the connected rooms and paths for the missing statue component. The component’s name is a practical clue: a tongue-shaped socket needs the Statue’s Tongue, while a hand-shaped socket needs the Statue’s Hand.
- Place the recovered component into the statue.
- Study the relief or recess that appears as the Configuration target. Note its silhouette and orientation.
- Equip the Genesis Configuration and rotate or reshape it until its outline fits the relief.
- Confirm the placement. If the shape does not seat, check the box’s rotation and the relief’s orientation rather than forcing the interaction.
This is the clearest distinction between an item lock and a Configuration gate. The statue part restores the physical subject; the box supplies the matching key shape. Treat them as separate stages of one clue chain.

Heart-shaped door
The heart-shaped door follows the same principle in a more ornate setting. Match the Genesis Configuration to the relief on the monument to obtain a Heart-Shaped Inset. Then place that inset in the ornate door. If you have reached the door without the inset, the monument—not the door panel—is the next place to investigate.
When the Configuration will not fit
- Verify that the required statue part or inset is actually installed before attempting the box step.
- Compare the entire silhouette, including protrusions and cut-outs; a shape that looks close from one angle may be reversed.
- Rotate the Configuration as well as changing its form. The relief may require the same shape viewed from the opposite side.
- Look for a second relief or socket nearby. The first visible recess can be a clue rather than the final destination.
Red chained bedroom door and the house entrance
The red chained bedroom door is part of a short progression rather than a standalone combination. Complete the poison-gas statue puzzle first, then obtain the Bedroom Key. Use that key on the chained bedroom door.
Inside, find the Security Card. It is the item that opens the house’s front door, so the bedroom functions as the route to the exit rather than merely a side room. If the chained door does not respond, the missing step is the poison-gas statue sequence or the Bedroom Key—not a code entered at the door.

Environmental puzzles: when the route is the answer
Not every progression barrier is a lock. The official interview describes the Genesis Configuration rotating a giant wheel to realign narrow walkways above spikes. In that situation, the correct action is to change the environment so the safe path connects; searching corpses or shelves for a bridge key will not help.
The repeating-room solution
One demonstrated looping-room puzzle reverses the usual survival-horror instinct. The room appears to lead forward, but the solution is to turn around. PlayStation.Blog’s description says: “The only way to solve this tormenting loop? By turning back instead of trying to move forward, which changes the entire setting.” Treat a repeated room as a directional puzzle: if forward movement reproduces the same scene, stop advancing, turn back, and observe what has changed.
This also explains why the game’s spaces can feel inconsistent. The labyrinth is described as intertwined with the real world, so a route can be solved by changing your relationship to the room rather than by finding a physical object.

Troubleshooting a door that still will not open
You have an item, but the door rejects it
Check whether the object is meant for a slot, inset, relief, or statue rather than a keyhole. A hand, tongue, or heart-shaped inset may need to be installed in a separate receptacle before the door recognizes the completed mechanism. Also verify that you are using the exact named object; a visually similar component may belong to another gate.

The clue seems to give the wrong code
Re-read the note after examining its associated photograph or diagram. Combine only the values presented as a pair or sequence, preserve leading zeroes, and enter the digits in the displayed order. For picture locks, reset the panel and rebuild the image from the diagram instead of relying on a remembered pattern.
The Genesis Configuration has no valid shape
Look for the missing statue piece first. Then inspect the relief at close range and rotate the box through every orientation. A near match is not sufficient: the outline must seat fully. If no relief is present, you may be trying the Configuration on a conventional lock or at the wrong stage of the clue chain.
The same room keeps repeating
Stop moving forward and turn around. The looping-room demonstration changes the setting when the player reverses direction, so repetition is the signal to test the opposite route.
Nothing in the room appears interactive
Move through adjacent rooms and return after completing the most recent objective. Revival can place the answer outside the room containing the barrier, especially for statue gates and the chained bedroom progression. Recheck notes, photos, and desk diagrams before concluding that the door is bugged.

For any unlisted lock, apply the same order: identify the lock type, search for its nearby clue, find the named item or missing component, and use the environment’s shape or diagram to determine the final interaction. That method matches the puzzle philosophy described by Mad Head Games and avoids wasting resources on combinations that the room has not actually provided.
