The Black Ops 6 New Zealand trick is no longer a current early-access method. It was a launch-day workaround used around October 25, 2024, when Xbox and the Windows Microsoft Store released the game according to regional midnight timing. Players changed their location to New Zealand because that region reached October 25 earlier than the United States. The method never granted ownership or an official early-access entitlement.
Short answer: the Black Ops 6 “New Zealand trick” was a launch-era regional-rollout workaround for Xbox consoles and the Windows Microsoft Store/Xbox app. It is not a current early-access method: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launched on October 25, 2024, and its launch window ended long ago. As of August 2026, changing your region cannot give you launch-day early access to Black Ops 6.
At launch, players in some regions changed an Xbox or Windows location to New Zealand, where local midnight arrived earlier than in the United States. The game still required a purchase or an eligible Game Pass subscription. The change did not create ownership, bypass a license check, or provide an official Activision entitlement.

What the New Zealand trick actually did
Black Ops 6 was released globally on October 25, 2024, but the Microsoft Store version used a regional rollout. New Zealand reached October 25 before North America, so its local midnight occurred during October 24 in parts of the United States. Contemporary launch coverage placed the New Zealand unlock at approximately 4:00 a.m. Pacific Time on October 24, although the exact result could vary by platform, account, rollout behavior, and server status. Activision’s launch information and launch reporting explain the distinction between the worldwide October 25 date and earlier local times.
That is why articles called it “playing Black Ops 6 early,” even though players were generally accessing the game when it became October 25 in an earlier time zone—not receiving a separate early-access edition. It was also not an officially advertised Activision feature. The instructions below document the method used around launch and should not be treated as a guaranteed or currently supported exploit.

What you needed at launch
- An Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or Windows PC using the Microsoft Store/Xbox app version.
- Black Ops 6 preloaded before the regional unlock, or a completed installation through the relevant storefront.
- Either a purchased license or an eligible subscription such as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on Xbox or PC Game Pass on Windows. Xbox announced Black Ops 6 day-one Game Pass availability, but changing region never supplied Game Pass access by itself. See Xbox’s day-one Game Pass announcement.
- A willingness to restore the normal region afterward and accept the potential Microsoft Store and account consequences.
If you needed the game license rather than a subscription, use a platform-compatible listing for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Buying the game and changing a console or Windows region are separate matters: the region setting did not replace the license requirement.
Xbox console method used for the 2024 launch
This was the commonly reported sequence for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles when the game was rolling out.
- Preload Black Ops 6. Install the game before attempting the regional change. The method was not a substitute for downloading the game.
- Open Settings. From the Xbox home screen, open Settings.
- Open the location menu. Go to System > Language & location.
- Set Location to New Zealand. Change only the console location required for the launch-era test. Do not assume that changing an Activision account address is necessary; community instructions varied, while the strongest evidence concerned the Xbox or Microsoft Store location.
- Restart the console. Select Restart now. Microsoft’s support instructions require a restart after changing the console region.
- Check the game. After the restart, open Call of Duty HQ or the Black Ops 6 product page. If the regional rollout had reached New Zealand and the title was licensed to your account, the game could become playable.
- Restore your normal location. When finished, return to Settings > System > Language & location, select your ordinary country or region, and restart again.
The method could fail even during launch. The title might remain locked, the storefront might retain stale data, the rollout might change, or the game’s online services might not yet be ready. A successful region change was never a guarantee that every mode or service would be available immediately.
Windows PC, PC Game Pass, and Microsoft Store method
The workaround was relevant to the Windows PC version distributed through the Microsoft Store and Xbox app, including the PC Game Pass route. It did not automatically apply to every PC edition. Launch coverage described the Microsoft Store version as following a regional rollout similar to Xbox consoles.
- Install the Xbox app and preload the game. Install Black Ops 6 through PC Game Pass or the Microsoft Store, and finish the download before the regional unlock.
- Open Windows Settings. Go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Change Country or region. Set Country or region to New Zealand.
- Restart the Xbox app. Fully close and reopen the Xbox app. If the release timer or game status does not update, restart Windows as well.
- Try Black Ops 6. Launch the game after New Zealand’s regional unlock, provided your Microsoft account has a purchase or eligible subscription.
- Restore the usual country or region. Return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region and select your normal setting after the launch window.
Changing Windows’ country setting could affect Microsoft Store behavior, subscriptions, games, apps, movies, and account funds. Microsoft’s country or region support page advises changing region when moving to another country for a substantial period, not as a routine way to manipulate store availability.

Why the trick did not work the same way everywhere
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
There was no equivalent one-step PlayStation method for an existing account. A PlayStation Network account’s country or region is selected when the account is created and ordinarily cannot be changed afterward. Sony explains that this setting affects purchases and downloadable content. Changing the console clock or an Activision profile therefore should not be presented as a dependable way to unlock Black Ops 6 early.

It could create payment, licensing, account, and downloadable-content compatibility problems. If you bought the game for PlayStation, use the account and storefront associated with the intended edition rather than assuming an Xbox-style location change will work. Sony’s terms document the account-region restriction.
Steam
Steam used its own PC release behavior. There is no strong official evidence that changing Windows’ country setting or an Activision account setting alone unlocked the Steam edition ahead of its scheduled release. The Xbox/Microsoft Store instructions should not be transferred to Steam.
Battle.net
Battle.net likewise had its own release behavior. Changing the Windows region was not established as a reliable early-unlock method for the Battle.net edition. Check the release information for the specific PC storefront instead of treating all PC versions as interchangeable.
Game Pass did not remove the eligibility requirement
Black Ops 6 was available day one through selected Game Pass plans, including Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. That meant an eligible subscriber could install and play through the appropriate Xbox or Windows route without buying a separate copy, subject to the plan and platform involved at the time.

The New Zealand setting changed how the storefront interpreted the local release timing; it did not turn an ineligible account into a subscriber. You still needed an active eligible plan or a purchased license. Current Game Pass catalogs, plan names, pricing, and availability can change, so verify the present listing directly rather than relying on the 2024 launch arrangement.
Common problems and what they meant
| What happened | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The game still showed “pre-order” or “not available.” | The regional rollout had not reached the relevant storefront, or that version did not use the same schedule. | Confirm the platform and storefront, then wait for the applicable release time. Do not assume a restart creates an unlock. |
| The game opened but requested a purchase or subscription. | The region change did not provide ownership. | Confirm that the account owns the game or has the required Game Pass plan. |
| The Xbox app still showed the old timer. | The app may have cached the previous storefront state. | Close and reopen the Xbox app; if necessary restart Windows. The process was not guaranteed. |
| Online features were unavailable. | Servers, account services, or the staged rollout might not yet have been ready. | Check official service information and try again later rather than repeatedly changing account details. |
| Store content or subscriptions behaved unexpectedly. | Microsoft warns that region changes can affect region-dependent products and account balances. | Restore the normal region and consult Microsoft support before making another change. |
Was the New Zealand trick bannable?
The available evidence establishes that the method was an unofficial storefront-region workaround, not that Activision universally banned players for using it. It is therefore inaccurate to promise that it was risk-free or to claim that users were automatically banned. The more supportable warning is practical: Microsoft cautioned that region changes could affect store products, subscriptions, and account funds, and the workaround could fail.
What applies now?
Nothing needs to be changed to obtain launch-day access to Black Ops 6 now because the launch date—October 25, 2024—has passed. If you are trying to play the game in 2026, use the normal purchase or eligible subscription route for your platform. For a future Call of Duty release, do not assume the same trick will work: release schedules, storefront rules, account systems, and enforcement policies can differ by title and platform.
In short, the 2024 New Zealand method was mainly an Xbox and Windows Microsoft Store timing workaround. It was not a PlayStation, Steam, or Battle.net universal solution, it did not grant a license, and it is now historical rather than actionable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you still play Black Ops 6 early with the New Zealand trick?
No. Black Ops 6 released on October 25, 2024, so the New Zealand method cannot provide launch-day early access in 2026. It was useful only during the original regional rollout.

Which platforms supported the Black Ops 6 New Zealand trick?
It primarily applied to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the Windows PC version distributed through the Microsoft Store or Xbox app. It was not established as a dependable method for PlayStation, Steam, or Battle.net.
Did changing to New Zealand give you Black Ops 6 for free?
No. You still needed a purchased license or an eligible Game Pass subscription. Changing the location only altered how the Microsoft storefront handled regional release timing.
What are the risks of changing the Xbox or Windows region?
Microsoft warns that changing country or region can affect games, apps, subscriptions, movies, and Microsoft-account balance. Restore your normal region after any launch-era test and avoid treating the setting as a routine workaround.

Bottom line: The New Zealand trick worked, when it worked, by taking advantage of the 2024 regional midnight rollout on Xbox and the Windows Microsoft Store. It did not provide ownership or official early access, was not a reliable PlayStation/Steam/Battle.net method, and has no current launch-day value now that Black Ops 6 released on October 25, 2024.
