To play an old console game on a PC, first check whether that specific title has an authorized PC release or is covered by an official backward-compatibility program. If not, an emulator such as RetroArch may run it, but the emulator does not supply the game: you need game content you are legally entitled to use. The available route depends on the console and title.
Start with the console and game you want to play
There is no one PC app that covers every classic console and game. Search for the exact title in official PC storefronts or publisher collections, then check any console maker’s backward-compatibility options. If neither offers a PC route, investigate an emulator that supports the system and confirm compatibility for the particular game.
Original Xbox games: check the Xbox PC app
As of Xbox’s July 22, 2026 announcement, its early-release PC backward-compatibility program began with four original Xbox games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Xbox says the games are accessible through the Xbox PC app in supported regions, available to purchase on PC and included with Game Pass plans, and playable through an existing digital console license. Check the app and the Xbox announcement for current availability and terms; this initial list is not the full original Xbox catalog.
Nintendo classics: official, but not on PC
Nintendo Switch Online offers classic-game libraries on Nintendo Switch-family systems, not on PC. Base membership includes NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries; the Expansion Pack adds catalogs including Nintendo 64, Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy. GameCube games are available only on Switch 2. Nintendo describes its classic catalog as containing over 150 games, a count that can change; see its classic-games catalog for the current selection.

The service requires a membership. Nintendo says games can be played offline, but members must connect online to verify membership every seven days. See Nintendo Support’s Nintendo Classics FAQ for conditions and supported hardware.
Use an emulator when there is no suitable official PC route
An emulator is software that reproduces aspects of a console so compatible game content can run on another device. RetroArch is one multi-system option, but it is a frontend for emulator cores, not a catalog of commercial games. You must obtain the content separately through a route you are legally entitled to use.

Do not assume that owning a cartridge or disc automatically gives you permission to download a ROM or make a copy. Rules for downloading, copying, format shifting, and BIOS files vary by jurisdiction, and the available sources do not establish a universal rule. Check applicable local law before copying or acquiring game files or BIOS files.
Check compatibility before setting up
Support depends on the console, emulator core, title, BIOS requirements, and sometimes peripherals. A multi-system frontend does not guarantee that every game will work. Consult the emulator’s current documentation for the system and title you have in mind; no universal compatibility list is established here.

Set up RetroArch and optional controller input
- Choose the console and title. Identify the system the game was made for and check whether an authorized PC version or official PC compatibility option exists.
- Check RetroArch’s current documentation. Confirm that an appropriate core supports the system and look for title-specific requirements, including any documented BIOS or peripheral needs.
- Obtain game content lawfully. RetroArch does not provide the commercial game files. Make sure your method of obtaining or copying content complies with local law.
- Connect a controller if you prefer gamepad input. A USB game controller for PC is optional. Check that it works with your operating system and chosen emulator, then configure its buttons and sticks in the emulator. RetroArch documents gamepad and analog-stick input for netplay.
- Test the game and adjust as needed. If it does not start or behaves incorrectly, recheck the selected core and any documented game-specific requirements rather than assuming all titles for that console are supported.
Playing with someone else
RetroArch documents netplay for classic games. Its guidance requires each player to have the same ROM and the content scanned into playlists; it also discusses gamepad and analog-stick input and peer-to-peer networking. Read the RetroArch netplay documentation for setup details. Netplay does not change the need for each player to use game content they are legally entitled to use.
