Nintendo says it has no plans to sell those catalogues as individual downloads. To play retro games without the subscription, buy a separate Switch port or a licensed compilation whose listed games include the title you want. Those purchases are independent products; they do not unlock Nintendo’s subscription library.
What “classic Nintendo games” means on Switch
On Switch, Nintendo distributes many of its older games through Nintendo Classics applications rather than a permanent Virtual Console storefront. The applications are tied to a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo Support says members receive ongoing access to the NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries while the membership remains active. The additional Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy libraries require Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo Switch 2 is the only system listed for Nintendo GameCube classics.

The distinction matters because a separately purchased retro game and a Nintendo Classics application are different products. Buying a compilation from another publisher may let you play the games listed in that compilation, but it does not grant access to an equivalent game in Nintendo’s subscription app. A cartridge or digital license for one anthology also does not turn the other Nintendo Classics applications into owned software.

These are access rights, not purchases. If the membership expires, the classic games become inaccessible, although save data stays on the console and can be used again if the membership is renewed. Nintendo also allows offline use after the application is installed, but it must verify membership online at least once every seven days. The verification requirement is described in Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. That seven-day check is easy to overlook when planning travel or using a Switch away from home. Offline play is therefore a convenience of an active membership, not a permanent entitlement. The console must eventually reconnect and validate the account before the application continues to work.
Can you buy NES, SNES or Game Boy games individually without a subscription?
For the games in Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics applications, Nintendo’s answer is no. Its support FAQ states: “There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems.” The same guidance says Nintendo Classics games are not planned for sale outside Nintendo Switch Online, although classic games can also appear as ordinary eShop releases or in packaged collections.
Consequently, there is no hidden Virtual Console menu, one-time unlock, or controller purchase that converts the subscription library into owned software. If the exact game you want exists only in a Nintendo Classics application, the official Switch route currently requires the appropriate membership and the account used to launch the application must itself be subscribed.
“Classic game” is not a single sales category. Nintendo may release a particular old title separately, while another title remains available only in a Nintendo Classics app. Always identify the exact Switch product rather than assuming that an appearance in one service means every version is sold independently.
That account rule applies even when another user on the same console has Nintendo Switch Online. Switching to an unsubscribed profile does not borrow the other account’s entitlement. Nintendo describes the account requirement in its membership FAQ.
The official subscription-free alternative: separate Switch releases
Without Nintendo Switch Online, your practical official option is to purchase a Switch game that includes the retro title or style of play you want. These releases can be individual ports, remakes, arcade archives or larger licensed compilations. They have their own licences, storefront listings, save systems and catalogues. They are not substitutes for the Nintendo Classics application’s full library.
This route changes the ownership question. You pay for a particular Switch product and can normally launch that product without a Nintendo Switch Online membership, subject to the product’s own listing. You do not pay once and gain a general entitlement to every old game from that era. The purchased item remains limited to its publisher, edition and included list.

- Konami’s Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection is a Switch compilation of Konami arcade games. Its catalogue is Konami’s, not Nintendo’s NES or Super NES catalogue.
- SEGA Mega Drive Classics, listed by Nintendo Australia, contains more than 50 Mega Drive titles. The listed games are SEGA releases from that platform family.
- Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is sold in standard and expanded editions. Atari describes the standard edition as containing 90-plus classic games and the expanded edition as containing more than 100 playable classics.
The counts above are the publishers’ product descriptions for those named editions, not a measure of all retro games available on Switch. A collection is useful only when its own game list contains the exact title you want. A larger number on the box does not make it a broader Nintendo library.
How to choose a collection that actually contains your game
Use the following process before paying. It prevents the most common mistake: buying a well-known “classic” bundle that belongs to a different publisher, console generation or regional release.
- Write down the exact title. Include the subtitle, arcade version, remake name and, where relevant, the original region. “The first game” or “the NES version” can describe several different releases.
- Identify the rights holder and original platform. A Nintendo-published NES game, a Konami arcade game, a SEGA Mega Drive game and an Atari 2600 game are separate catalogues. A collection from one publisher does not imply games from another.
- Read the product’s included-games list. Check the publisher’s page and the local Nintendo eShop listing rather than relying on the collection’s title or cover art. Confirm that the exact game—not merely a similarly named sequel or remake—is present.
- Check your country’s listing. The SEGA page cited above is Nintendo Australia’s listing, while the Konami page is on Nintendo’s U.S. store. Release dates, ratings, languages, editions and availability can differ by region.
- Confirm the edition. Atari’s standard and expanded editions do not have the same advertised catalogue. Verify whether the seller is offering the standard or expanded edition and whether any extra games are delivered by download.
- Choose physical or digital deliberately. A physical cartridge requires the cartridge to be inserted; a digital copy is tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account and console-use rules. Neither format requires Nintendo Switch Online merely because it is retro-themed, unless that specific product says otherwise.
Do not infer inclusion from screenshots, a character on the cover, or a search snippet. Open the full listing and look for the title in the publisher’s game list. If the listing is unclear, treat the game as unconfirmed rather than assuming it is included.
What the main subscription-free examples contain
| Product | Publisher or catalogue | Advertised scope | What it does not provide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection | Konami arcade catalogue | Games listed on Nintendo’s U.S. product page | Access to Nintendo’s NES, Super NES or Game Boy application |
| SEGA Mega Drive Classics | SEGA Mega Drive catalogue | More than 50 titles, according to Nintendo Australia | A general-purpose Nintendo Classics library |
| Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, standard edition | Atari catalogue | 90-plus classic games, according to Atari | The expanded edition’s additional advertised games |
| Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, expanded edition | Atari catalogue | More than 100 playable classics, according to Atari | Games not listed for that edition or region |
“More than 50,” “90-plus” and “more than 100” are promotional catalogue counts attached to the named products and editions. They do not guarantee that a particular Nintendo character, NES release or Super NES release appears in the bundle. They also should not be compared as if every publisher counts games in exactly the same way.
How to purchase and play a separate collection
- Search the Nintendo eShop or a reputable retailer for the exact product name. Open the listing for your country, not a search result from another region.
- Open the game list and edition details. Check the included title, language, age rating, physical/digital format and whether the listing identifies a standard or expanded edition.
- Buy or redeem the product on the Nintendo Account that will use it. A separately sold game follows that product’s normal Nintendo Account and console rules; it is not activated through the Nintendo Switch Online app.
- Install the game from the eShop’s redownload or download screen, or insert the cartridge. The collection should launch as its own Switch game.
- Start the included game from the collection’s menu. Any save states, rewind options, filters or museum material are features of that particular compilation, not features added to Nintendo’s subscription library.
Nintendo’s own installation process is different: the subscribed user opens eShop, finds the Nintendo Switch Online membership content and selects the relevant Nintendo Classics application. Nintendo documents that route in How to Access the Nintendo Classics Game Libraries. That process does not install a permanently owned copy of each game.
If you are buying a physical compilation, check the box for the edition and region before ordering. If you are buying digitally, verify that the listing is for Switch rather than another platform. These checks matter because similarly named collections can exist on multiple systems and in multiple editions.

- Subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if the target is in the N64, Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy or Switch 2 GameCube library.
- On the Switch, open Nintendo eShop with the subscribed user.
- Locate the Nintendo Switch Online membership content and select the appropriate Nintendo Classics application.
- Download the application and launch it with the same subscribed account.
- For offline play, reconnect the console to the internet often enough for Nintendo’s seven-day membership check. If the check cannot be completed, access may be suspended until the console validates the membership.
Expansion Pack is not needed for the NES, Super NES or Game Boy libraries. It is the higher tier for the additional systems listed above. Choosing the higher tier solely for an NES or SNES title therefore does not change the account requirement or turn the game into a purchase.
The save file is not deleted when a membership ends. Renewing the membership restores access to the application and allows the existing save data to be used, subject to Nintendo’s account and service rules.
Do you need a classic controller?
No. Nintendo’s NES Nintendo Classics listing marks its wireless NES controller as optional, and the games can be played with the standard Joy-Con or a compatible Switch controller. The accessory changes the feel and layout; it does not change the licence or membership requirement. Nintendo’s controller information appears on the NES Nintendo Classics product page.
The same principle applies to subscription-free collections: a classic-shaped controller may improve comfort, but it cannot unlock a Nintendo Classics application or make an unsubscribed account eligible. Decide on the accessory after confirming which software you are actually buying.
Common situations and the correct fix
“Another profile on my Switch pays for Nintendo Switch Online.”
Launch the Nintendo Classics application with the profile that has the membership. Nintendo’s stated access rule is account-based, so another profile’s subscription does not satisfy the requirement for an unsubscribed user.
“The game worked offline last week but is locked today.”
Reconnect the console to the internet and launch the application using the subscribed account. Nintendo permits offline use but requires periodic online validation, described as every seven days in its FAQ.
“My membership expired and my save disappeared.”
The save data remains on the console even though the application’s games are inaccessible. Renew the membership and open the application with the same account to use the save again.

“I bought a retro compilation, but the Nintendo game I wanted is missing.”
Check the compilation’s complete title list, edition and region. A publisher’s anthology covers only its licensed catalogue; a SEGA, Konami or Atari collection is not a replacement for Nintendo’s NES, Super NES or Game Boy library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The eShop listing is not available in my country.”
Use your local eShop or a retailer that serves your region. The cited product pages come from different national storefronts, and listings can vary by territory, edition and current availability.
“A controller bundle says it is for Nintendo Classics.”
Treat the controller as an accessory. Confirm the software’s membership requirement separately; hardware cannot convert subscription access into ownership.
“Can I install the Nintendo Classics app now and keep playing after canceling?”
No. Installation does not change the service model. The application can work offline for a limited verification period while the membership is active, but the games become inaccessible when the membership ends.
“Does buying one collection give me every game from that console generation?”
No. The collection’s publisher and title list define its scope. Even a bundle advertised with dozens of classics contains only the listed games and does not provide Nintendo’s separate subscription catalogue.
A practical decision guide
- Want a title only found in Nintendo’s NES, Super NES or Game Boy app? Nintendo Switch Online is currently the official Switch route.
- Want N64, Genesis, Game Boy Advance or Virtual Boy Nintendo Classics? Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is required.
- Want GameCube classics on Nintendo Switch 2? Use the Expansion Pack offering when the specific GameCube title is available.
- Want to avoid any Nintendo Switch Online membership? Buy a separately sold port or licensed compilation and verify its exact game list first.
- Want a more authentic button layout? Add an optional compatible controller after confirming the software access requirements.
The key test is not whether a product looks retro. It is whether the exact game is sold as its own Switch software or included in a licensed collection. If it exists only inside Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics service, there is currently no official subscription-free purchase path on Switch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play NES games on Switch without Nintendo Switch Online?
Not through Nintendo’s NES Nintendo Classics application. Nintendo requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for that library. A separately sold port or licensed collection is the subscription-free alternative when the exact game is included.

Do I need Expansion Pack for NES, SNES or Game Boy games?
No. Those three libraries are part of standard Nintendo Switch Online. Expansion Pack is required for Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy, and for GameCube classics on Nintendo Switch 2.
Can another account’s membership unlock Nintendo Classics on my console?
No. The account launching the Nintendo Classics application must have the membership. A subscription on another profile does not satisfy Nintendo’s account requirement.
Can I buy Nintendo Classics games individually?
Nintendo says it has no plans to sell Nintendo Classics games outside Nintendo Switch Online or bring them together under a Virtual Console storefront. Individual ports or licensed compilations may exist as separate products, but they do not unlock the subscription apps.
Will Nintendo Classics work offline?
Yes, for a limited period. Nintendo allows offline play but requires the console to verify membership online at least once every seven days.
What happens to my save when the membership expires?
The games become inaccessible, but the save data remains on the console. Renewing the membership and using the same account allows the save to be used again.
Is the wireless NES controller required?
No. Nintendo lists it as optional. Joy-Con or another compatible Switch controller can play the games, but no controller bypasses the membership requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow do I know whether a compilation includes my game?
Check the publisher’s complete game list, the exact edition, your region’s eShop listing and the physical or digital format before buying. Collections from Konami, SEGA and Atari have different catalogues and are not interchangeable.
The Bottom Line
Nintendo’s NES, Super NES and Game Boy Classics apps require standard Nintendo Switch Online; the additional retro libraries require Expansion Pack. If you do not want a membership, buy a separate Switch release or licensed compilation and verify that its exact title, edition and region match what you want. No controller, second profile or installation trick converts Nintendo’s subscription library into a permanent purchase.
