A deeply depleted Switch can keep its screen black and show a charging indicator only briefly, so leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before trying to start it again.
These steps apply to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED. They do not establish the correct procedure or adapter for Nintendo Switch 2, which has separate charging documentation.

Start with this five-minute reset
- Undock the console. Remove the Switch from its dock so the dock is not part of the first test.
- Disconnect the adapter completely. Unplug the AC adapter from the wall and from the console or dock. Leave it disconnected for 30 seconds.
- Force a shutdown. With the console disconnected, hold its POWER button for 20 seconds, then release it.
- Connect the specified charger directly. Plug the Nintendo Switch AC adapter labeled MOD. HAC-002 into a wall outlet and the USB-C connector on the bottom of the console.
- Check for a response. Press POWER once. Nintendo says the battery-charging icon should appear. If the battery is almost empty, the display can remain off and the icon may be visible only briefly in the upper-left corner.
Do not keep pressing POWER while the battery is recovering. Leave the console connected for at least 30 minutes, then try POWER once more.

A Switch with an extremely low battery may not have enough energy to light the display or boot the operating system. It can still accept power while appearing dead. The short charging symbol is easy to miss, particularly if you are watching for a normal startup screen.
#1 Best Overall
- Plug in the AC adapter and power your Nintendo Switch system from any 120-volt outlet. The AC adapter also allows you to recharge the battery, even while you play.
The 30-minute wait is an initial recovery period, not a full-charge estimate. Nintendo says a complete charge takes approximately three hours under normal conditions. A console that has been stored empty, used while connected to a weak or damaged adapter, or repeatedly interrupted during charging may need time before it can start reliably.
Test the wall outlet, adapter and charging path
Verify the adapter model
Read the label on the power supply. The model Nintendo specifies for these systems is HAC-002. Check the cable and plugs for a split or frayed section, a loose connector, crushed insulation or severe kinks. A damaged cable should not be used.
Nintendo recommends a licensed Switch AC adapter for best performance. Nintendo has not evaluated every unlicensed product, so an unlicensed adapter can have compatibility problems; that statement is not proof that every third-party USB-C power supply is unsafe or incompatible. For diagnosis, use the specified HAC-002 adapter whenever possible.
Try another wall outlet
Move the HAC-002 adapter to a different wall outlet, preferably one you know powers another device. Avoid adding a failing extension lead, travel adapter or overloaded power strip while you are diagnosing the console. A different outlet separates a household power problem from a console problem.

Use another Nintendo USB-C product as a cross-check
If you have another Nintendo product that accepts this adapter, disconnect the adapter from the Switch and test it with a compatible device such as a Pro Controller, Joy-Con Charging Stand or the Switch dock. This is only a basic functional check: a result on another device does not prove that the console’s USB-C port is healthy, and a failed result does not identify the exact internal fault.
- Another Nintendo device powers normally: the adapter is delivering power to at least one product, so the console, its connector or its battery becomes the more likely service issue.
- No other device responds: stop using that adapter and arrange a replacement or service evaluation rather than repeatedly testing a damaged supply.
Inspect the Switch USB-C connector safely
Use a light to look into the console’s bottom USB-C port. Look for obvious bent metal, a connector that sits out of alignment, or physical damage around the opening. Do not force a tool, pin, liquid or compressed object into the port, and do not try to bend contacts back into place. A damaged console connector requires service; a different charger cannot repair a mechanically damaged port.
Make sure the plug is fully seated without forcing it. If the connector feels unusually loose, only works when held at an angle, or shows visible damage, stop charging attempts and arrange service. Repeatedly wiggling the cable can worsen a port that is already damaged.

Use the charging icon and elapsed time to classify the problem
| What you observe | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Charging icon appears briefly, then the screen goes dark | Leave the console connected for at least 30 minutes before pressing POWER again; a nearly depleted battery can behave this way. |
| No icon after the direct-to-console test | Repeat the adapter reset, try another wall outlet, confirm the HAC-002 label and inspect the cable and USB-C port. |
| The console starts but the battery percentage does not increase | Continue only with the specified adapter and direct connection; if the level still does not rise after several hours, seek service. |
| The dock does not charge the console, but direct charging works | Use direct charging while diagnosing and then check the dock, its connections and the adapter separately. |
| The cable or console connector is visibly damaged | Do not force the connection. Have Nintendo evaluate the damaged component. |
The table separates symptoms without treating a black screen, a failed dock and a worn battery as the same fault. The direct connection is the cleanest first test because it removes the dock from the power path.

Direct charging versus dock charging
Nintendo documents charging through the dock when the HAC-002 adapter is connected to the dock. Dock charging is normal operation, but it is not the best first diagnostic because it adds another connector and another device to the chain. Start with the adapter plugged straight into the console. Once the console accepts a charge there, reconnect the dock and test dock charging as a separate step.
When the battery is worn rather than unable to charge
A Switch that charges to 100 percent but runs for less time has a different symptom from one whose battery level never increases. Nintendo says battery capacity gradually declines with use; after about 800 charge cycles, it expects roughly 80 percent of the battery life of a new system and describes that reduction as normal. Runtime also varies with the Switch model, the software being played and functions in use.
Do not diagnose a worn battery solely from one short session. First confirm that the console reaches a full charge and that the charger and connector pass the checks above. If the system cannot reach full after several hours, treat that as a charging fault rather than ordinary capacity loss.
How long to wait before escalating
After the reset and direct-connection test, allow the console to charge for several hours. Nintendo’s general estimate for a full charge is approximately three hours. If the charging icon never appears, or the battery still does not reach full after several hours, Nintendo advises seeking service once the troubleshooting steps have failed.

Service is also appropriate immediately when the console’s USB-C connector is visibly damaged, the adapter’s cable is unsafe, or the console only responds when the plug is held in a particular position. Do not keep experimenting with a damaged connector in the hope that a different power supply will restore it.
What to include when requesting Nintendo service
- Describe whether the console was tested undocked and directly from a wall outlet.
- State whether the charging icon appeared, even briefly, and how long the console was left connected.
- Identify the adapter model printed on its label and note any visible cable damage.
- Include the HAC-002 adapter with the console when Nintendo’s service instructions request it, so the complete charging setup can be tested.
- Check Nintendo’s service page for your region before sending anything. Availability, warranty coverage, prices and turnaround times differ by region and are not established here.
Common mistakes that make the symptom look worse
Testing only through the dock
A dock adds another possible failure point. A direct console connection gives a clearer answer about whether the console and adapter can establish a charge.
Trying to boot repeatedly
Repeated POWER presses consume the small amount of energy a deeply depleted battery is recovering. Perform the 20-second forced shutdown once, connect the charger and wait.
Assuming every USB-C charger is equivalent
The connector shape alone does not identify the correct charging setup. Use the HAC-002 adapter for the diagnostic sequence and check the adapter’s condition before drawing conclusions.

Cleaning the port aggressively
Objects pushed into the USB-C connector can bend contacts or cause additional damage. Limit inspection to a visual check and leave repair to Nintendo or a qualified service provider.
Model-specific boundaries
Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED
The HAC-002 direct-connection procedure and the approximately three-hour full-charge estimate apply to the standard Switch family guidance covered here. OLED hardware still uses the same style of bottom USB-C charging connection for this troubleshooting sequence.
Nintendo Switch Lite
The Switch Lite charges through its own bottom USB-C connector and does not operate as a docked television console. Follow the direct-to-console steps; do not add dock troubleshooting to a Lite that has no dock connection.

A practical prevention checklist
- Keep the specified adapter and its cable free of sharp bends, crushing and strain at the plugs.
- Connect and disconnect the USB-C plug straight rather than twisting it.
- Use the dock and its cable only after confirming the console can charge directly.
- When the console has been empty for a long period, allow recovery time before assuming the display or battery has failed.
- Arrange service for visible connector damage instead of using an angled or intermittent connection.
For a Switch that appears completely dead, the decisive sequence is: undock it, disconnect the adapter for 30 seconds, hold POWER for 20 seconds, connect HAC-002 directly to a wall outlet and the console, press POWER once, and wait at least 30 minutes. If there is still no charging indication or the battery cannot reach full after several hours, stop troubleshooting and contact Nintendo service with the adapter available for testing.
