On a PS4 or PS5, the supported way to play Sony’s classic library is through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. In the US, Classics Catalog access is part of PlayStation Plus Premium: open PlayStation Plus, find a game, and choose Download or Stream when that option is shown. The individual listing is the final authority because availability, membership requirements, removal dates and play method vary by title and region.
What you need to play classic games
You need a compatible PS4 or PS5, a PlayStation Network account and a PlayStation Plus plan that includes the title you want. For US accounts, Sony’s current PlayStation Plus comparison places the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming under Premium. Essential provides the core membership benefits, while Extra adds the Game Catalog; neither tier is shown with Classics Catalog access in that comparison.

PlayStation Plus access is a service entitlement, not permanent ownership. A game remains playable only while your membership and the title’s catalog eligibility continue. Sony can remove individual games, and the catalog differs by country. Before subscribing, check the game’s live listing on your own console or regional PlayStation Store page.
- PS4: browse and launch eligible catalog games from PlayStation Plus.
- PS5: browse and launch eligible catalog games from PlayStation Plus.
- Download: available only when the title listing offers it and your plan allows it.
- Stream: available only when the listing offers streaming and your connection meets Sony’s requirements.
How to find classic games on PS5
- From the PS5 Games home screen, scroll to PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits tab.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Browse or search for a title and open its product page.
- Choose Download or Stream, whichever appears for that game.
If a title does not show a button, check the membership attached to the signed-in account, the game’s regional availability and whether Sony has removed it. PlayStation Plus games can also be reached from Game Library; the exact button shown there still depends on the title’s eligibility and delivery method.

How to find classic games on PS4
- From the PS4 function screen, scroll to PlayStation Plus.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Open the game you want.
- Select Download or Stream when offered.
The same account, plan and regional rules apply on PS4. If a game is absent, do not assume that every PS1, PS2, PSP or PS3 release is supported. The catalog is a selected, changing library rather than a complete archive of every game released for those systems.

Sony says a wide selection of classic PS3 games in the Classics Catalog is streaming-only. Therefore, a PS3 title may appear in the catalog without providing a download option. Never infer the method from the console generation; open the specific listing.
Streaming requirements and restrictions
Bandwidth thresholds
Sony’s support guidance specifies at least 5 Mbps broadband for Classics Catalog streaming. For 1080p streaming, the game must support 1080p and the connection should be at least 15 Mbps. A slower connection can cause the service to reduce resolution. These are minimum connection requirements, not a promise of a particular image quality or latency on your network.
If the stream is unstable, pause other heavy traffic, use a wired connection where practical and confirm that the console’s measured connection is above the applicable threshold. A queue can still occur even when your bandwidth is sufficient.

These restrictions apply to the streaming session described by Sony’s support page. They do not mean that every downloaded catalog game has the same limitations.
Using Select and Start in streamed PS3 games
For PS3 games streamed through the service, Sony maps Select to the left side of the touchpad and Start to the right side on DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers. You must click the touchpad; tapping it does not perform the mapped press. This matters in games whose menus or pause screens depend on those original buttons.
Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. Sony’s backward-compatibility support page states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” Do not insert an original PS3 disc into a PS5 expecting it to install or authenticate.

Sony also warns that a PS4 digital game obtained through the PS3 game-to-PS4 upgrade program may require the original PS3 disc. Because the PS5 cannot use that PS3 disc, the upgrade cannot be treated as a general route to playing the game on PS5.
The documented restriction is specific and important: it does not establish a complete compatibility chart for every PS1, PS2 or PSP retail disc on every PS4 and PS5 model. Keep expectations limited to the Classics Catalog listing and other officially supported products shown for your account.

Can you play PS1 games on PS5?
Some PS1 games are available through the Classics Catalog, but not every PS1 release is included. Open the catalog on the PS5, select the exact game and confirm that your region and membership show a Download or Stream option. If the title is missing, the catalog does not currently offer it for that account.
Sony’s catalog examples include Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, The Legend of Dragoon, Tekken 2 and Ridge Racer Type 4. These examples illustrate the type of PS1 selection Sony has promoted; they are not a complete or permanent inventory.

What kinds of classic games are in the catalog?
PS1 Classics
The original PlayStation launched in 1994. Sony’s examples include Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, The Legend of Dragoon, Tekken 2 and Ridge Racer Type 4.
PS2 Classics
Examples named by Sony include Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Dark Cloud and Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus.
PSP Classics
Sony highlights Killzone: Liberation and Resistance: Retribution. Sony’s editorial material says the PSP sold over 80 million units, but does not give a cutoff date for that figure; it should be read as the historical figure stated on that page, not as a current sales total.
PS3 and PS4-era classics
Sony’s examples include Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, God of War III Remastered and The Last of Us Remastered. A game being described as a PS3 or PS4-era classic does not by itself tell you whether the current catalog listing allows downloading or only streaming.
Why a game may not appear or may lack a download button
- Region: PlayStation Plus catalogs are not identical worldwide. A game promoted in the US may not be licensed in your country.
- Membership tier: In the US, Classics Catalog is a Premium benefit. Essential and Extra do not show that benefit in Sony’s comparison.
- Title removal: Sony can publish a removal date or withdraw a title from the service.
- Delivery method: Some classic PS3 games are streaming-only, so no download button is expected.
- Account context: The console must be signed in to the account that holds the qualifying membership.
Use the listing displayed on your console as the final check. Marketing pages and older articles can describe a catalog at an earlier point in time, while the live listing reflects your region and current service status.
Choosing the practical route for your setup
Choose a download when you want predictable local play
Download a title when the option is offered and you have enough storage. The game no longer relies on an active streaming session while you play, which avoids stream queues and connection-related resolution changes. Membership and catalog eligibility still apply; downloading does not convert the game into a permanent purchase.
Choose streaming when storage or availability favors it
Streaming is useful when the title is streaming-only or you do not want to install it. Check the 5 Mbps minimum, the 15 Mbps target for 1080p when the game supports that resolution, and the unavailable features listed above. Plan for the possibility of a queue.

There is no single evergreen price to quote for PlayStation Plus Premium. Sony’s displayed price can vary by country, billing term, promotions and account-specific offers. Check the subscription screen on your own account before deciding whether Premium costs less than another way to obtain a particular game. A lower-priced Essential or Extra plan should not be assumed to include the Classics Catalog simply because it includes other PlayStation Plus benefits.
Premium access is also different from buying a license outright. If Premium expires, or if Sony removes a game, the catalog entitlement no longer guarantees access even if the game remains installed. A downloaded catalog game therefore should be treated as an installation tied to the service, not as a permanent purchase. If the store offers a separately sold version, read that product page’s license and PS4/PS5 compatibility details.
For a long playthrough, check the title immediately before subscribing, then check again if you are close to a posted removal date. This avoids starting a game that may leave the service before you finish it.
Controller and accessory considerations
You do not need a special retro adapter to use the Classics Catalog. A PS5 uses its DualSense controller, and PS4 uses DUALSHOCK 4; Sony cautions that not every third-party controller will work. For streamed PS3 games, use the touchpad-button mapping described earlier when the original game expects Select or Start.
A replacement or second compatible controller can be useful for local multiplayer when a downloaded game supports it, but streaming has the controller restrictions Sony lists. Confirm support on the title and session before buying an accessory specifically for multiplayer. Sony’s streaming limitations also rule out mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move and camera features during the streamed session.
A troubleshooting checklist
The Classics Catalog menu is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended PlayStation Network account.
- Check that the account has the US Premium tier, or consult your region’s plan comparison for the equivalent benefit.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the console interface rather than relying on an old shortcut or saved store page.
The game is listed but cannot be downloaded
- Read the listing for a Stream-only designation; many classic PS3 games use that model.
- Check whether the membership on the account qualifies.
- Look for a service removal date or an availability message.
The stream looks soft or keeps changing quality
- Measure the connection against Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum.
- For 1080p, verify both the 15 Mbps connection target and the game’s 1080p support.
- Reduce competing traffic and consider a wired network connection.
The game is waiting in a queue
Queues are a listed possibility for streaming. Wait for the session to become available or use the download option if that particular title provides one.
The original disc does not work
Do not troubleshoot a PS3 disc as though it were a supported PS5 format: Sony explicitly excludes PS3 discs on PS5. Return to the Classics Catalog listing or another officially identified PS5 version instead.
