Remote Play, Cloud Gaming and a Windows handheld are three different ways to play Xbox-related games away from a television. Remote Play streams a game installed on your own Xbox console; Cloud Gaming runs a supported game on Microsoft’s servers; a Windows handheld runs compatible PC games locally and can also use either Xbox streaming option.
That distinction determines what you need to buy, which games you can access and whether your console must remain available. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handheld PCs built around all three paths, but neither device turns every Xbox console game into a local Windows game.

|---|---|---|---|
| Is an Xbox console required? | Yes. The console supplies the game and must be configured for remote access. | No personal console is identified as a requirement in the cited Xbox product material; a supported device and subscription are required. | No console is needed for compatible PC games installed on the handheld. Xbox streaming remains an optional extra. |
| Where does the game run? | On your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. | In Microsoft’s cloud service. | On the handheld for native PC games; streaming services can run separately. |
| What library is available? | Games installed on your console, including Game Pass titles installed there, as described by ASUS. | Games that Microsoft currently makes available for cloud play. | Compatible Windows PC games and storefronts, plus any available Xbox streaming catalog. |
| What must be checked? | Remote features, console power state and setup compatibility. | Current subscription tier, supported games, device support and regional availability. | Exact handheld configuration, Windows game compatibility, storefront support and local price. |
Remote Play and Cloud Gaming are streaming technologies, so neither creates a local game installation on the receiving device. Local Windows play is a separate PC-gaming path with its own operating-system, launcher and hardware requirements.

Xbox Remote Play: use the console you already own
Remote Play is the most direct choice when your Xbox library is tied to a console. The Xbox sends the game’s video and audio to another supported screen while your controller input travels back to the console. Your console remains the source of the game.
What the console setup requires
ASUS’s ROG product information says an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One must have remote features enabled and must be powered on or in Sleep mode for the described Ally use case. That means an Ally cannot independently launch a console-only title through Remote Play when the Xbox is switched off, disconnected or not configured for remote access.
- An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S with the remote feature enabled.
- The console available in the required power state: on or in Sleep mode for the ASUS-described scenario.
- A compatible receiving device, such as a Windows handheld or another supported screen.
- A reliable network connection between the console, service and receiving device.
The available official material does not establish an exhaustive list of supported phones, tablets, networks or accessories. A controller can be useful for a phone or tablet, but no single controller model is universally required by the cited information.

Remote Play exposes games installed on your own console, rather than a separate cloud catalog. If a game is not installed or otherwise available on that Xbox, Remote Play does not make it appear on the handheld. Conversely, a game that streams well from your console is not automatically a Windows PC title that can be installed locally.
Remote Play setup checklist
- On the Xbox console, open the system settings and enable the console’s remote features.
- Set the console to remain available for remote connections; ASUS specifies On or Sleep mode for the Ally scenario.
- Sign in with the account that owns or can access the installed games.
- On the receiving device, use the Xbox remote-play entry point and follow its pairing and sign-in prompts.
- Start with the console and handheld on a stable connection. If the stream is unstable, reduce competing traffic or move the devices closer to the network access point before changing hardware.
Microsoft’s support pages can change their setup labels and supported-device guidance. Check the current Xbox Remote Play instructions for your region and device before troubleshooting an otherwise unexplained connection failure.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: stream a supported catalog without your own console
Cloud Gaming moves the game server-side. Microsoft’s official product material says the feature requires a supported device, while the Microsoft Store listing also identifies a subscription requirement. The service therefore solves a different problem from Remote Play: you do not need your own Xbox console for the cited use case, but you do need an eligible account, plan and game.

Cloud Gaming’s library is not your entire Xbox library
Cloud Gaming is a catalog of games Microsoft currently enables for streaming. Ownership, installation and cloud eligibility are separate states. A game in your console library may be unavailable in the cloud; a cloud-playable game may not have a Windows handheld version that can be installed locally. Catalog rules, plan benefits and regional access can change, so verify them at the time you play.
What to verify before subscribing
- Whether Cloud Gaming is offered in your country or account region.
- Which current subscription tier grants access, rather than assuming every Game Pass plan includes it.
- Whether the particular game is cloud-playable today.
- Whether your handheld, browser or other receiving device is supported.
- Whether your network and controller setup meet the service’s current guidance.
The retrieved official pages do not provide a complete, date-stamped list of countries, subscription tiers, devices or games. Treat those as live service details, not permanent specifications. Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming support and account pages are the authority for the current offer.
When Cloud Gaming is the better fit
Cloud Gaming is useful when you want to avoid buying an Xbox console, downloading a large game or carrying console hardware between rooms. It is less suitable when the title is absent from the current cloud catalog, when your connection is unreliable or when you need an offline local installation. Streaming also depends on service availability and account terms that can change independently of your handheld.
Windows handhelds: local PC games plus Xbox streaming
The ROG Xbox Ally family is Windows 11 handheld PC hardware developed by ASUS and Xbox. Microsoft describes Windows handhelds as giving users access to PC storefronts and applications, while Xbox describes the Ally family as supporting native play, Cloud Gaming where available and Remote Play from an Xbox console.
ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X
The two Xbox-branded devices named in the official material are the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. They are separate hardware configurations, not two modes of the same device. Microsoft’s Store listing identifies the Ally X memory as 24GB LPDDR5X-8000. The available information does not provide a complete, controlled comparison of processor performance, battery life, display quality, thermals or value, so that memory figure should not be treated as a performance ranking.

Why Windows changes the choice
A Windows handheld can install games from supported PC storefronts and run applications such as Discord. In a June 9, 2025 Windows Experience Blog announcement, Xbox gaming devices executive Roanne Sones described the benefit this way: “Because these handhelds run Windows, you have access to games you can’t get elsewhere, so you can enjoy the full freedom and versatility of PC gaming — download games from your favorite storefront, run apps like Discord, watch your favorite streamers on Twitch, and play with your favorite mods — all straight from the Xbox experience.”

That is Microsoft product positioning, not a guarantee that every game, mod or application works identically on every model. Windows compatibility depends on the game’s PC build, launcher, anti-cheat system, controls and hardware requirements.
Use the Windows Performance Fit indicator as a check, not a promise
Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program describes a Windows Performance Fit indicator and says the program is launching alongside the Xbox Ally family and will be available on supported Windows 11 handhelds. Use the indicator to investigate whether a game is expected to work well on a supported handheld, then check the game’s own PC requirements and current launcher or anti-cheat notes. Program coverage and rollout can change.

If the game is installed on your Xbox but has no compatible Windows PC version and is not in the cloud catalog, Remote Play is the relevant handheld route. You need the console available and configured.
Cloud access
If Microsoft lists the title for Cloud Gaming in your region and plan, you can stream it to a supported device without owning an Xbox console. This remains dependent on the live catalog and service terms.
Native PC access
If a Windows version exists and the handheld meets its requirements, you can install and run it locally. Local PC access is independent of whether the same title is available for console Remote Play or Cloud Gaming.

Overlapping access
Some games may be available through all three routes, but the save system, downloadable content, graphics settings, controls and account entitlements can differ. Confirm the exact edition and account linkage before purchasing a second copy or assuming progress will transfer.

You already own an Xbox and want a second screen
Start with Remote Play. It extends the console you have rather than adding another game platform. Check remote settings and the console’s required power state before buying a handheld.
You want Xbox games but do not want a console
Check Cloud Gaming first. Confirm the current subscription, supported game list, regional eligibility and device support. A Windows handheld can provide local PC games as a second library, but it does not replace the cloud catalog.
You want PC storefronts, mods and local installs
Choose a Windows handheld based on the games and applications you actually use. Verify launcher, anti-cheat and controller compatibility. Xbox streaming can supplement local play, but it should not be the sole reason to buy Windows hardware if a phone or tablet already meets your streaming needs.
You want offline play
Prioritize native Windows installations and check each game’s offline behavior. Remote Play and Cloud Gaming both require an active streaming path; neither is an offline substitute for a local installation.
Requirements, limitations and troubleshooting
Connection quality
Both Remote Play and Cloud Gaming depend on a network path. The available sources do not provide a measured latency target, bandwidth threshold or battery test, so no universal number should be promised. If controls feel delayed or the image breaks up, test the network before concluding that the handheld is underpowered.
- Confirm the console is on or in Sleep mode for Remote Play.
- Confirm the account used on the handheld can access the intended games or subscription.
- Check whether the title is installed on the console for Remote Play.
- Check the live cloud catalog and plan eligibility for Cloud Gaming.
- For local play, update Windows and the game launcher, then compare the game’s PC requirements with the handheld’s current configuration.
Common mistakes
- Calling Remote Play cloud gaming: Remote Play uses your console; Cloud Gaming uses Microsoft’s servers.
- Assuming every Xbox game is a PC game: Console, cloud and Windows libraries overlap only where Microsoft or the publisher supports each path.
- Assuming a Game Pass subscription guarantees every streaming benefit: Check the current tier and region.
- Treating a hardware specification as a performance review: The published 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 figure for Ally X does not establish frame rates or battery life.
- Buying a handheld solely for streaming: A supported device you already own may meet that need; local PC play is the main additional capability of Windows hardware.
What to check before buying or subscribing
- List the games you care about and label each one console-installed, cloud-playable or Windows-PC compatible.
- For console titles, confirm your Xbox model, remote-feature setting and expected power state.
- For Cloud Gaming, verify the current plan, country, device and title eligibility.
- For a Windows handheld, compare the exact model configuration and storefront support, not just the Xbox branding.
- Check retailer stock and pricing immediately before purchase; the cited material does not establish a permanent price or availability schedule.
Bottom line: match the stream or installation to your library
Remote Play is the console-extension option: your Xbox remains the game machine. Cloud Gaming is the subscription-based streaming option: Microsoft supplies the game session when the title, plan, region and device qualify. A Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X is the broadest platform because it can run compatible PC games locally while also offering both Xbox streaming paths.
Do not treat those paths as interchangeable libraries. Decide first whether your priority is an existing console library, a supported cloud catalog or local Windows PC games, then verify the current account, device and regional requirements.
