How to Play Console Archives Games on Nintendo Switch 2

Console Archives games are individual Hamster releases, not Nintendo Classics. Find a specific title in your regional Switch 2 eShop, check its listing, then download and launch it from HOME.

To play a Console Archives game on Nintendo Switch 2, find that specific game in Nintendo eShop, buy or download it if it is listed in your region, then launch it from the HOME Menu. Console Archives titles are individual digital releases from Hamster Corporation; they are not part of Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo Classics libraries.

Download and start a Console Archives game

  1. Connect your Switch 2 to the internet and open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
  2. Search for the exact game title. Check the eShop for your country or region: listings and availability can vary.
  3. Review the game’s product page for its price, language information, and any listed requirements. The available reporting does not establish a complete current catalog or price list.
  4. Buy or download the game from its product page, then return to HOME once the download is complete.
  5. Open the game’s software tile. Check its in-game settings for any available button-layout, screen, or save options.

Hamster’s reported Console Archives features include customizable button layouts and screen settings, as well as save and load functions. What is available can depend on the individual title. Nintendo Insider’s February 6, 2026 report identified Cool Boarders and Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos as the series’ initial Switch 2 releases, but that dated report is not a complete current catalog.

Console Archives and Nintendo Classics are different

Console Archives Individual digital game releases found in Nintendo eShop. Whether the exact title is listed in your region, along with its price, language, and any requirements. The reporting identifies eShop as the channel for the initial Switch 2 releases. Source
Nintendo Classics Download a system-library app from eShop and access it with the required Nintendo Switch Online membership. Which library and membership tier apply. Nintendo says the GameCube Classics library is exclusive to Switch 2. Nintendo’s instructions

Nintendo Classics includes libraries for systems such as NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube; the available libraries and membership requirements vary. Nintendo’s steps are to open Nintendo Switch Online, choose Nintendo Classics, select a library, then download its software from eShop. Those are instructions for Nintendo Classics, not a requirement for Console Archives purchases.

Check availability and language title by title

Availability, release timing, and language support are not universal across Console Archives games. For example, Gematsu reported on August 19, 2026 that Rhapsody II: Ballad of the Little Princess was scheduled for digital release on Switch 2 and PS5 the following day; the report said its user interface and manual would be in English while its game text would remain Japanese. Check the specific title’s current eShop listing rather than assuming another game has the same language options.

Do you need a separate controller?

The evidence does not establish that a separate controller is required for Console Archives games. Nintendo says the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but that compatibility information does not make it necessary for this series. Check an individual game listing for any title-specific requirement. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information also cautions that some original Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible; that general backward-compatibility note does not determine whether a particular Console Archives release is available.
