For the current Counter-Strike Workshop workflow, subscribe to a custom map, open a Play With Friends lobby, invite your friends, choose the map, set permissions to Private Match, and start the local server. These are CS2 instructions: Steam now presents Counter-Strike 2 as the free upgrade to CS:GO and labels CS:GO as its legacy version.
What “custom Deathmatch” means
Deathmatch is a fast-paced mode with instant respawns and repeated engagements. In Valve’s description of standard CS:GO Deathmatch, players can buy weapons after spawning, kills with different weapons have different point values, and selected weapons can earn bonus points. Valve’s CS:GO game-mode description explains those standard rules.
“Custom Deathmatch” can refer to a community map or server that changes the map, settings, or rules. Valve says Workshop maps can run in the Custom game mode with settings defined in a custom config file, so the details depend on the map or server rather than necessarily matching standard Deathmatch.
Play a Workshop map with friends
- Subscribe to a Workshop map. Find a suitable map in the Steam Workshop and subscribe. Valve says subscription downloads it and makes it available in the in-game Workshop tab.
- Open a Play With Friends lobby. Invite the friends you want to play with.
- Choose the map and privacy setting. Select the map and set the lobby permissions to Private Match.
- Start the local server. Valve says invited friends can download the map through their game clients and join. The sequence is documented in Valve’s CS2 Maps Workshop FAQ.
The FAQ’s menu flow describes the current CS2 Workshop experience; it does not establish that the same steps work in a separate legacy CS:GO client.

Join a community Deathmatch server
If you want to play a community map or ruleset without hosting it yourself, use the community-server browser. Valve says the browser remains available. Check each server’s map and description before joining: server operators control the map and rules, and availability can vary.

Steam’s current listing for app 730 is titled Counter-Strike 2, describes it as the free upgrade to CS:GO, and identifies CS:GO as the legacy version. Accordingly, the Workshop instructions above are for CS2. The official sources cited here do not confirm the current installation or online-play steps for a separate legacy CS:GO client, so do not assume the CS2 menu path applies there.

- Counter Attack is a football (soccer) strategy game which lasts for 90 minutes. The two players ('managers') each control a team of 11 players. Every player has a unique set of skills that the managers try to best utilise during play. Managers control how the players move, pass, dribble, tackle and shoot.
- Duels between players on the pitch - whether tackles, shots or headers - are determined by a combination of the unique player skills plus a dice roll. During movement phases, a sand timer is used to keep the pace of the game up.
- Counter Attack features everything you'd expect in a game of football, from corners to free kicks, penalties to red cards and injuries.
