You can add disc support to some PS5 consoles that were sold without a drive. Buy Sony’s detachable CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive, attach it to a compatible Digital Edition or PS5 Pro, and connect the console to the internet during the initial pairing. This does not work with the original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition, and a generic USB optical drive is not an established way to play PS5 discs.
Compatibility depends on the model number printed on your console, not simply on the words “Digital Edition.” Check that number before buying anything.

Check whether your PS5 can accept a detachable drive
Sony has released more than one Digital Edition design. The newer slim consoles and PS5 Pro can use the detachable drive, while the original launch Digital Edition cannot. Sony’s US pages identify the following compatible model groups:

| CFI-7000 / PS5 Pro | Compatible with Sony’s detachable drive | Attach the drive, complete online pairing, then use supported game discs |
| CFI-1000 original PS5 Digital Edition | Not supported | Use digital downloads or a separate disc-capable console |
Find the exact model designation on the console and compare it with Sony’s current local product and support pages. Regional pages can group models differently, and future hardware revisions may change the list. The current US compatibility and setup information is available in Sony’s PS5 disc-drive setup guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why the model number matters
The removable drive is designed for the chassis and covers used by specific console groups. A PS5 being sold as “Digital Edition” does not by itself prove that the CFI-ZDD1 will fit. Treat the model number as the deciding check; do not buy on appearance, storage size, or the retailer’s shortened product name alone.
What you need
- An eligible PS5 Digital Edition slim model or PS5 Pro.
- Sony’s detachable CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive, sold separately.
- The console’s correct cover and feet arrangement for the drive installation.
- An internet connection for pairing the drive and console during first-time setup.
- A supported PS5 game disc or a supported PS4 title on Blu-ray if you want backward-compatible physical software.
Sony also describes the drive as supporting 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. That is separate from game compatibility: the drive does not turn every disc or every PS4 title into a supported game. Check the title and format before relying on a particular disc.
Buy the right drive, not a generic external optical drive
The supported accessory is the Sony CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive. The official pages reviewed for this guide do not establish that a generic USB optical drive can read PS5 game discs or provide the console’s required game-disc functions. A USB drive that works with a computer should not be treated as a substitute.

When purchasing, verify three things on the listing:
- The accessory is identified as Sony’s detachable Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1.
- Your console’s model group appears in the current Sony compatibility information.
- The seller’s regional listing matches your console and includes the required cover or installation components where applicable.
Prices and stock vary by country and date. Sony’s current product page is the appropriate place to confirm availability and the model description for your region; do not infer present stock from an older listing.
Install the detachable disc drive
Sony’s illustrated procedure is model-specific, so use the official installation guide while handling the covers and drive. The safe sequence is:

- Shut the PS5 down completely. Do not install the drive while the console is running or in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect the cables. Unplug power and the other connected cables so the console can be handled safely.
- Allow the console to cool. Wait until it is cool before removing any cover.
- Position the console exactly as Sony shows for your model. The orientation matters for removing the designated cover and feet without forcing them.
- Remove the designated cover and feet. Use only the panels and feet identified in Sony’s guide; different PS5 revisions do not use identical cover layouts.
- Attach the CFI-ZDD1 drive. Align and secure it as illustrated. If it does not seat easily, stop and recheck the model and cover position rather than applying force.
- Reconnect the console and start it. Keep the drive attached while the console completes its setup.
- Complete the online pairing. Sony states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Follow the on-screen process with the console connected to the internet.
The guide’s pictures and model-specific directions take precedence over a generic description. Keep the removed cover and feet in a safe place in case you later remove the drive or return the console to its original configuration.
Why the internet step cannot be skipped
The requirement is for the initial pairing of the accessory and console. Do not plan to perform first-time installation completely offline. Connect the PS5 before beginning setup, and if pairing fails, restore the connection and retry the on-screen process before assuming the drive or console is defective.
Play a physical PS5 or supported PS4 game
- Confirm that the disc is a supported game format and that your console model and CFI-ZDD1 installation have already passed setup.
- Insert the game disc into the attached drive according to the orientation shown for your PS5 model.
- Wait for the console to recognize the disc and display the game on the home screen.
- Choose the game tile and follow the installation or update prompts shown by the PS5.
- Keep the physical disc available whenever the console requires it to verify ownership or start the installed game.
The drive supports PS5 games and a broad catalog of supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray. “Supported” is important: Sony does not promise every PS4 title, and compatibility can depend on the individual game. If a disc is not recognized, check the title’s compatibility and condition before concluding that the drive cannot play discs generally.

Use the drive for movies and other media
With the CFI-ZDD1 attached, Sony lists support for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. This makes the accessory useful if you want both physical games and movie discs. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition, however, remains unable to play disc-based games or media; adding a USB optical drive does not change that limitation.
Disc-format support is not unlimited. A disc can be physically readable yet still be unsupported as a game or media format. For the most reliable answer, compare the disc type and title with Sony’s current disc and USB media support information.

Use another disc-capable PS5
A separate PS5 with an integrated or compatible disc drive is the straightforward route for a library of physical games. Your disc remains the ownership check for those games, so moving the disc to another compatible console is more practical than trying to adapt the unsupported CFI-1000 hardware.
Do not rely on a USB drive workaround
Sony’s official information does not establish generic USB optical-drive playback for PS5 game discs. USB storage support and an optical game drive are different functions. Avoid spending money on a computer accessory on the assumption that the PS5 will expose it as a game-disc drive.
Troubleshoot the common setup problems
The drive is not recognized
- Turn the console off and check that it is one of the listed compatible model groups.
- Power down, unplug the cables, let the console cool, and reseat the drive using Sony’s illustrated procedure.
- Confirm that the designated cover and feet were removed or installed exactly as the guide shows for that revision.
- Reconnect the console and complete the internet pairing rather than testing only with the console offline.
Pairing cannot complete
- Confirm that the PS5 has an active internet connection.
- Restart the console and repeat the on-screen pairing process.
- Check Sony’s current support page for a model-specific instruction or service notice before replacing hardware.
A game disc is rejected or does not appear
- Verify that the drive is fully attached and that setup pairing finished.
- Check whether the title is a supported PS5 game or supported PS4 title, rather than assuming all PS4 discs work.
- Check the disc format and condition. A scratched, damaged, or unsupported disc can fail independently of the drive.
- Test with another known-supported disc if available; this helps separate a title-specific problem from an installation or drive problem.
The console is an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition
Stop troubleshooting the accessory: that model is not supported for disc games or media. Use digital downloads or a different disc-capable PS5 instead.
Choose the route that fits your library
| Your situation | Best-supported route | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim Digital Edition and you own physical games | Add the CFI-ZDD1 | Pair the drive and console online during setup |
| PS5 Pro and you want physical games or movie discs | Add the CFI-ZDD1 | Confirm the current regional listing and complete online pairing |
| Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition | Use digital downloads or another disc-capable PS5 | The detachable drive is not supported |
| You only buy digital games | Keep using the Digital Edition without adding a drive | Physical-disc playback is not required |
| You want movie discs as well as games | Use the CFI-ZDD1 on a compatible console | Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD support |
Check the current regional information before purchase
Compatibility names and product availability can change as Sony adds model revisions, and regional product pages may describe the same family with different group labels. Before ordering, read the current Sony listing for your country, compare its model numbers with the number printed on your console, and then use the matching setup guide. This final check prevents the most expensive mistake: buying a drive that physically resembles the right accessory but is not supported by your PS5 revision.
