You can play Doom on a digital camera, but only with a port built for a specific camera and firmware. The most fully documented current route is Doom550D, an experimental Magic Lantern module for the Canon EOS 550D (also called the Rebel T2i or Kiss X4) running Canon firmware 1.0.9 with a matching Magic Lantern 550D.109 build. A separate CHDK port targets the Canon PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70 on firmware 1.02a. Neither port is a universal camera executable.
Check your exact camera and firmware first
Identify the camera model and firmware before downloading anything. Magic Lantern or CHDK support alone does not mean a particular Doom port will work: its executable, memory use, screen handling and button map are made for a particular camera environment.

For the current, detailed Doom550D instructions, the target is the Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i / Kiss X4 on Canon firmware 1.0.9, with a compatible Magic Lantern 550D.109 core and 550D_109.sym file. The project marks the port experimental and warns: “Do not install this binary on another camera or firmware version.” See the Doom550D project documentation.
If you have a PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70, a distinct CHDK-based port is documented for firmware 1.02a. Its setup is not interchangeable with the 550D instructions.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
Set up Doom550D on a Canon EOS 550D
- Back up the SD card. Confirm that Magic Lantern already works normally on the camera before adding the game module.
- Check the Magic Lantern files. Use a compatible 550D.109 build, including its
autoexec.binand550D_109.sym. Keep these artifacts and the module from compatible builds together; mismatched exported symbols can prevent the module from loading. - Install the module. Copy the release module to
ML/MODULES/doom.mo. - Add game data. Create
ML/DOOM/if it does not exist and copy a compatible, legally obtained IWAD into it. The module does not include Doom or other game data. - Select and launch the game. Choose the WAD from Magic Lantern’s Games menu. Restart the camera after changing the selected WAD, then start the game.
Which WADs are supported?
The module names these Doom-family IWAD filenames: doom1.wad (shareware), doom.wad (Doom / The Ultimate Doom), doom2.wad, tnt.wad, plutonia.wad, freedoom1.wad, freedoom2.wad and freedm.wad. The port does not supply these files; make sure you have the rights to use the data you install.
PWAD/mod selection is not implemented. Heretic, Hexen, Strife, Doom 64, PK3 files and source-port-specific IWADs are unsupported. Hacx 1.2 is recognized by filename but is not playable in the current module because the required embedded compatibility-patch handling is absent.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Use the 550D’s physical controls
| Camera control | Doom action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys | Move forward or backward and turn |
| Hold zoom in (+) | Run |
| Hold zoom out (-) with left or right | Strafe |
| SET | Fire; confirm in menus |
| PLAY | Use doors and switches |
| Rear wheel | Previous or next weapon |
| DISP (called INFO internally by Magic Lantern) | Open the automap; go back in menus |
| MENU | Open or close the Doom menu |
ISO, depth-of-field and shutter buttons are intentionally unused. Canon may handle some buttons below the module input layer, potentially showing camera overlays, triggering autofocus or taking control away from the game.

A separate CHDK route: PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70
The sd1000-doom project documents Doom on the 2007 Canon PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70 through CHDK, without flashing or modifying Canon firmware. Its prebuilt setup specifies the SD1000 with firmware 1.02a, CHDK 1.6 for that exact target and a bootable SD card no larger than 2 GB, formatted in-camera. It needs a standard shareware DOOM1.WAD. Boot into playback mode and launch the game from CHDK’s Games menu. The project reports a camera test on 2026-06-27.

This port shows why sharing a processor family does not make a camera binary portable. Its developer describes loading a 481 KB flat binary into an idle 8 MB raw image buffer and compiling for ARMv5TE; the port also relies on a camera-specific palette and button map. The project says other CHDK-supported DIGIC III cameras may be adaptable, but addresses, buffer size, palette and controls would need camera-specific work. Its notes describe gameplay as playable and snappy, not as a measured frame-rate result. The port has no sound yet.

A Doom engine is only one part of the job. The camera-facing code has to make the game cooperate with hardware and firmware that were designed for photography.

- Execution and memory: The camera needs a way to load and run the program, enough usable memory for the engine and game state, and build artifacts that match its processor and firmware. The SD1000 implementation’s raw-buffer approach is specific to that camera and port.
- Display: The port must translate game frames into the camera’s screen buffer and palette. Doom550D documents its bitmap, pitch, VRAM and palette assumptions, while the SD1000 port describes a limited usable palette and an 8-bit overlay.
- Input: Physical buttons must map to movement, turning, firing, menus and releases in a way that accounts for camera firmware intercepting some events. Button mappings therefore cannot be assumed to work across models.
- Storage: The port needs to locate IWAD data and handle saves and settings. Doom550D separates WADs, configuration and saves into directories and documents save-compatibility checks.
- Audio, when supported: Sound requires an audio output path and timing that work on the camera. Doom550D uses camera audio output with an AdLib-like software synthesizer rather than cycle-accurate OPL2 emulation; the SD1000 port has no sound.
- Safe return to camera use: Exiting should restore display, input and audio state, and repeated launches and errors need handling. Doom550D documents cleanup behavior and camera-side testing checks.
Older DigitaOS camera route
A historical DOOMD.CAM route is documented for compatible late-1990s Kodak and other DigitaOS cameras. Its README excludes the Kodak DC220 because it has insufficient RAM and says the Kodak DC290 needs firmware 1.0.4 or later. This documentation does not establish that current devices or the required software downloads are readily available, so it should not be treated as a modern plug-and-play option. See the DigitaOS DOOMD project documentation.

Performance expectations
The Doom550D README calls version 0.4.1 “the best playable build tested so far,” a qualitative description from the project, not a numeric benchmark. No independently published frame-rate figure is established in the project material. Do not infer an FPS or assume a port’s ability to boot proves that its controls, sound, saves and camera cleanup all work.
