If you are, get somewhere safe and call your local emergency number. Otherwise, save the message and account details if you can, report the player through the game or platform, block or mute them, and tell someone you trust. Contact local police if the threat raises a safety concern. You do not need screenshots or other evidence before asking for help.
1. Decide whether there is immediate danger
If the person says they are coming to your location, reveals details suggesting they know where you are, or otherwise appears to pose an immediate physical threat, stop engaging and prioritize getting to safety. Call the emergency number for your location. The FBI gives this advice for the United States: “If you are in immediate physical danger, call 911.” In the UK, Police.uk identifies immediate danger to life and threatened violence as emergencies for 999. These numbers are location-specific; use your local emergency service elsewhere.

Do not keep talking to the player or try to investigate them to find out whether they mean it. If you are unsure what to do, ask a trusted person nearby to help you contact emergency services or local police.
2. Save what you can, but do not delay getting help
If it is safe and quick, preserve the message, chat, or recording before it disappears. Keep the original where possible, and note:

- The exact wording of the threat
- The sender’s displayed name and user ID, if visible
- The game or platform where it happened
- The date and time, including your time zone if relevant
- Any relevant profile, message, voice note, or video details
The FBI advises preserving electronic evidence and not deleting threat messages. Police.uk makes clear that evidence is not required before reporting: “You don’t need to gather ‘evidence’ like screenshots, text messages, videos or photos before you report to us.” Save what is available, but do not postpone a report or urgent help because you cannot capture a screenshot.
3. Stop or limit further contact
Use the game or platform’s mute, ignore, block, and privacy controls to prevent further contact. If safe and practical, preserve the relevant content first, since blocking or changing access may make it harder to view later. Do not delay an urgent report to do so. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner recommends collecting evidence and then reporting and blocking abusive players; its broader guidance also advises adjusting privacy settings.

4. Report the player to the game or platform
Use the game’s report function or the reporting tools for the connected console, store, or social platform where the message appeared. Include the account identifier, when the incident happened, and the message or recording if the form allows it. Keep any confirmation or reference number.
Menus and reporting steps vary by game and platform. For example, Rockstar’s instructions for GTA Online on PC describe that product’s in-game reporting route; they are not a universal menu map. Australia’s eSafety adult cyber abuse scheme generally asks users to report content to the platform first, but that is a jurisdiction-specific process—not a reason to delay contacting police if you are worried about safety.

5. Contact local police if the threat raises a safety concern
Consider contacting local police when a threat is specific or ongoing, refers to a real-world identity or location, suggests planned violence, or otherwise makes you concerned for someone’s safety. Laws and reporting routes differ by location, and an unpleasant or hostile message does not automatically meet the legal definition of a crime everywhere.
In the United States, the FBI says to contact a local field office or submit a tip at tips.fbi.gov for threats associated with federal crimes. It notes that incidents below the federal-crime threshold may need to be reported to local police. In the UK, Police.uk provides local routes for reporting threatening messages.

6. Tell someone you trust
You do not have to handle a threat alone. A friend, family member, trusted adult, or support professional can help you preserve details, use reporting tools, and decide whether to contact police. If you are young or distressed, tell a trusted adult. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner points young people to support services such as Kids Helpline.

7. Take extra care if personal details or accounts are involved
If the player appears to know your identity or location, or has exposed personal information, preserve the messages and account identifiers and contact the platform and appropriate authorities if you are concerned about safety. Review your privacy and security settings. If you think an account may be compromised, use the platform’s account-support process. These steps can help you respond, but no single privacy setting can guarantee that personal information will not be exposed.
